  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Opinion - My family lived through socialism. Most Democrats are frighteningly wrong about it.

Comparing the extremes of authoritarian regimes to social policies of Democratic socialism is absurd. More scare tactics to keep feeding capitalist oligarchs.

Indeed, many don't see or understand the tyranny of socialism.
Excerpt:

Guards on horseback drove all of the "special settlers" to work with whips. Children, who were made to labor alongside adults, were occasionally shot while scavenging for food. Torture was commonplace for anyone showing attitude, and Shota experienced it more than once. Many died of starvation and disease.

_____

Interesting. This has already happened in America. Maybe the current administration should stop whitewashing our history so we don't repeat the same mistakes. It doesn't matter what system of government you live under if the leadership is cruel or you have no protection under the law or in practice. Most dems are not for socialism replacing capitalism. There are just some things, like social security and universal healthcare that would benefit everyone.

This is exactly how all of the worst communist regimes started, with the idea that everyone else did it wrong and only we can do it better. And then it escalates to the worst possible scenarios imaginable.

Laughable.

This from the link:

'Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani have built careers on the promise of what they call "democratic socialism," drawing crowds of young Americans who see that word not as a warning but as a hope.'

If you don't understand the difference between true socialism and democratic socialism (and being rounded up by the NKVD in the early hours), if you think you can compare the tyranny of communist post war Russia with Bernie Sanders then you shouldn't be posting about those matters in the political section of the forum.

Yep. That’s how it started in Cuba. The promises become lies rather quickly.

Georgia (and not the one next to Alabama).

Ah, we already burned the one next to Alabama..

But come on man (mr OP). This is nonsense. You are taking about a Soviet dictatorship. That has nothing to do with any of the DSA types in this country. Give it a rest.

Indeed, many don't see or understand the tyranny of socialism.
Both capitalism and socialism are bad when either is combined with dictatorship.
The dictatorship is the part that makes it evil, not the capitalism or socialism.
We are in the terrible situation we are in right now, not because the U.S. has become more capitalistic, but because its leader is a dictator, who is consolidating all power under the executive branch and ignoring everything that congress and the courts might do to stop him.
Many of the atrocities the author of the essay described are happening in the United States right now. Immigrants are being held in substandard per profit prisons filled with maggots. We have financed a dictator in Israel who has been indicted for war crimes in the hague. We have engaged in a
4 month, unnecessary war, which cost us a hundred and twenty billion, and now seemingly we'll pay 300 billion to get out of it without getting anything more than the status quo that had existed earlier this year.
And it was not socialism or capitalism that put us in this woeful place. It was the election of a self-aggrandizing dictator who is spending millions of tax dollars in self promotion.

Authoritarian statism =/= democratic socialism

What a weird opinion piece to publish. It would be rather like publishing an article with the headline "My family lived through Nazism, therefore Republicans are wrong about capitalism".

So you think sticking the word “democratic” in front of it changes anything?

The Soviets already put "Democratic" in the names of their client states like the DDR. The issues is not the word "democratic" it is about the dishonest conflation by the Yahoo! writer of the Soviet state with other forms of government or political parties using the word "socialism".

If you want to discuss why you don't like what democratic socialism offers or seeks or what exists in the social welfare states (also called "socailism") in places like Sweden, go ahead, but don't play the infantile game of tagging any of those with "socialism = Stalinism".

Anyone who thinks that socialism and democratic socialism and communism (especially when comparing democratic socialism with Russia secret police purges in the wee hours) are all the same, then they must have taken a day off sick when international political systems were being taught in high school.

The internet is a wonderful thing. Take the time and use a search engine to find out about these different systems so that you don't end up having to ask the type of questions that you just did above.

Yes.

It means the core principles of democracy, representative government and the right to private property, will remain in place. No one is suggesting the government should control the means of production, only that certain safeguards against capitalist excess and greed be implemented.

There is no move toward authoritarianism under any proposed democratic socialist platform. Unlike with the Trump administration, which not only does employ authoritarian measures, but ignores the rule of law.

How is that better?

-- A2SG, let's not forget, socialism is an economic system, not a system of government....

Why do you doubt the experiences of those people who previously lived under socialist and communist regimes who came here to escape them and now see the same thing happening here? If you think it’s just one person making a mountain out of a molehill, you need to think twice. There are MANY people who have written and said the same thing as this author about what is happening here under the leftist administrations who have embraced and started putting socialist programs in place.

So how about the capitalist lies we have been sold? because a lot of people are discovering, or perhaps rediscovering that wild west capitalism isn't a good system. It is how we ended up with people like Lenin, Stalin and Hitler. They were a direct response the failings of capitalism and monarchism. Ever wonder why so many socialists in the USSR were so gung ho? Because Stalin was still an upgrade to the monarchs, as awful as he was. We took a different (and frankly better) path with Social democracy, but the GOP seems determined to fully dumpster this system. Some of them are ignorant of how this will bring about the socialist boogeyman they keep harping about, others want it, because they are counting on it bringing about fascism instead.
