  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

You said "the EO folks here" in response to my laughing at your post.

In response to you, yes.

And please check out the "orthobros" as they are called on X. Truly vile stuff.

I've heard of them. They are not representative of the Orthodox Faith.

Convenient. Well, the jerks who are Protestants do not represent Protestantism either, because Protestantism is not a monolith.

Which is why I don't judge all Protestants based on your error.

I've had the laugh emoticon used against me a lot, so I am sensitive to it.

I'm sorry I upset you, but your post truly made me laugh because no one reads Scripture in a vacuum. All of us interpret Scripture within a particular tradition whether we're aware of it or not.

Did Paul take a Nazarite vow? Yes or no?
All we are told is that he took a vow. The shaving of the head may indicate that it was a Nazarite vow:

(Num 6:18) Then the Nazirite shall shave his consecrated head at the door of the tabernacle of meeting, and shall take the hair from his consecrated head and put it on the fire which is under the sacrifice of the peace offering.

But note it was at the door of the tabernacle of meeting. Paul was in Cenchrea, a harbour town in Greece, where there was no tabernacle, synagogue or temple. I repeat, we are not told what the vow was, so it is impossible to give a yes or no answer.

Since when has God lined up the details just so in the way we want them to be to draw a conclusion? Answer: never.

Your answer brings up far too high an epistemic cost... The Bible doesn't explicitly say so, so we don't know. Well, neither does God write his name in the clouds every day, so we know He is real. But lots of people still believe in God. Your answer is essentially that we are not given enough details to conclude anything. But that is not how 99% of life works. As such, it is too high an epistemic cost for your position to be a good one.

Thanks for your time. I'm done.

Failure to use scripture in context can lead to problems, specifically misusing it to fit a personal concept. But then again taking the scriptues as a whole as we have seen can be misused also when the Kingdom which was Jesus' only Gospel and God's message throughout the Bible, is abandoned to create a religion focusing on what's in it for us rather than on God's authourity over our doctrines and human ways. "Self" is the enemy of the Kingdom and that adversity to God has always infiltrated the ways of man including our religions.
