  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Kilauea Volcano is spectacular today.

Still waiting for a new eruptive episode. In the meantime the HVO has a new map that is current, at least for a few hours :)

One number caught my attention. The vent elevation (3510 ft) matches the 3500-foot contour in the main caldera (Kaluapele) which is located very close to the edge of the cracking from the 2018 collapse. In other words, if you had gone down on to the caldera floor 10 years ago and stood on the edge of the pit of Halema'uma'u, the current vent openings that emerge from the remnants of that pit would be even with you. That's a lot of recovery and refill. I thought about working up a timeline of the crater refill last weekend during this pause, but didn't get to it.

As for the upcoming episode...

After a couple "deflationary" incidents light spattering has finally started, but no overflows. Probably not imminent in hours but a day or two sounds about right.

The last several episodes have been characterized by dozens of overflow episodes from the south vent, followed by a couple vigorous overflows from the north vent, the last of which transitions to high fountains. Well...

starting yesterday the south vent has overflowed 97 times and the north vent for the first time about 20 minutes ago. The north fountains are low, but vigorous. I suspect the official start of episode 48 will be soon, in the mean time the direct view of the north vent is still fun to watch:

This image from last evening shows the north vent on the right with a very low flow that stayed inside the vent area and flowed back (but it did build a small cone wall inside) and the silvery, crescent-shaped flow from the first 30-40 overflows of the south vent on the right. It's night now so you can only see the glowing fresh lava and not the background.

Episode 48 ended after 9 hours of eruptive activity (still available in 12 hour look back of YT streams for now) in the rain.

The already have some photos up.

This one is from near the Uekahuna public overlook which is the about 1.5 km/ 1 mile from the fountain. Everything in focus is covered in fresh deposits from this 17-month old eruption: the "small" mound with the fresh lava falling on it which is inside the old pit; the large mound to its left, on the rim; the "gravely" foreground; the "drifty" looking near background above the pit; and even the plain the left of the big mound -- all covered in some amount fresh deposits of 2025-26 lava (including ash and tephra).

A video version and other photos are here:

There were some shallow earthquakes as Episode 48 ended that when measured by satellite radars shows several inches of uplift at a spot on the south rim (not far from the viewing area):

Surveying cone formation from Friday:

Another episode (#49) is possible in 4-8 days.

Sneaky volcano hadn't even overflowed when I checked this morning (about 9 hours ago). It's been erupting for about 2 hours. Viewing places available:
