  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The utter failure of Christian influence.

Well you made me Google “visit the sock” to see if I could fashion some response.

Best I can do:
If you want to plan a trip centered around iconic footwear history, you should visit the Sock Monkey Museumin Long Grove, Illinois. This highly rated destination holds the Guinness World Record for the world’s largest collection of handmade sock monkeys, boasting over 2,000 vintage

Visit the sock, man! Visit the sock!

Maine Progressive,

What have you accomplished in this thread? You've convinced me that you can't change God's will.

I definitely agree. One cannot change God’s will. And I have no delusions about my lack of influence. I’d be silly to believe I could accomplish anything here. But this site offers a place where I can exercise my faith and witness to my hopes and beliefs and interact with other Christians such as yourself.

What are you witnessing to Christians?

What I've written. What I hope to share in the future. I am grateful to be able to participate here. Along with the many others who witness to their own faith in Christ.

Matthew 6
5And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. 6But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.
7But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. 8Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.
9After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
10Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
11Give us this day our daily bread.
12And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
13And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. 14For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: 15But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

Pretty sure we aren't allowed to broad stroke an entire group, like southern christians ???

I got a post removed and moaned at by poor moderators because I feel that the previous generations are basically (generally) pretty spoiled, entitled and haven't done a great job for their descendants.
I think this is a valuable lesson for my generation.
1) Dont blindly follow tradition. (You're elders are supposed to be wiser and generally better - I haven't found anything like that to be the case)
2) Think sustainably and long term, not just about myself. Example - here in the UK, they are building houses - "newbuilds" that are ugly, poorly designed, cheap and basically a waste of time, resources and energy. They are fit for one thing. Some poor future generation with sense is going to have to knock them all down and build something sensible in its place. We can and should just do the job properly the first time around.

I don't see any sermons or prayer requests.
Well, I do pray a lot actually. But I wouldn’t post my personal prayers here for two reasons. They are my heart conversations with God. They feel very private. But I don’t fault other Christians who wish to publicly share their prayers with others. And, if so, wouldn’t they put those prayers in the prayer request section? Or the chat section? I don’t see anyone else on this specific forum sharing any prayer requests. The other reason is that I’m well aware of many many Christians struggling and suffering in this modern era. They are the ones who deserve our earnest prayer. I’m just a comfortably retired old man. To me, it would feel embarrassingly vain to ask for prayer for myself. (As you quoted, Mt 6:5 “that they may be seen of men”)

As for sermons, what I’ve written so far is as close to ‘preaching’ as I want to get. Sometimes too close I feel. I don’t mean to come across as ‘preaching’. Anyway, wouldn’t sermons belong in the Theology Section or Equipping the Saints section? I just am thankful to share with other Christians what weighs upon my heart. While being mindful that others’ faith may lead them differently.

As I have said on this string several times I am not criticizing either all or individual southeast Christians. They are as completely and sincerely Christian’ as all other ‘Christians’ throughout the United States. It has nothing to do with measuring their Christianity against others. It is focused entirely on the false claim that ‘greater Christian influence would make a region better’. My disagreement with that claim is based on the fact that the southeast region of the U.S., with a majority Christian population, performs worse than the rest of the U.S. That is a fact. That is not a broad brush against southeast Christians. It is just pointing out that the claim is false. Again…the claim, not the Christians.

OP made clear at the beginning that this wasn’t about “southern Christians” vs other Christians. The southeast just happens to have a higher density of self-proclaimed Christians.

Yes prayer does a lot of good. It's brought me a lot of insights into my shortcomings and guided me to be a better person. So I am grateful for the way God works through prayer. On the other hand, every time I hear the sanctimonious phrase 'thoughts and prayers' after each school shooting I just want to vomit. James 2
