  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Bill replacing 'mother' and 'father' with gender-neutral terms passes in New York, heads to Hochul's desk

New York Democrats recently passed a bill that would remove the words "mother" and "father" from parts of state law, sending the legislation to Gov. Kathy Hochul’s desk for final approval.

Under the new bill, targeting state child custody and parental laws, "mother" becomes "gestating parent," "father" becomes "non-gestating parent," and "paternity" becomes "parentage."

It passed in the state Senate this week after progressing through the Assembly in March.

If same-sex marriages are legally recognized in New York (which, post Obergefell, I think they have to be), then we probably need laws to reflect that reality. Even if one doesn't approve of those marriages, they legally exist.

They've been legal in New York since 2011. Massachusetts was the first state to legalize same-sex marriage in 2004. Many states followed after.

Everyone has a biological mother and father- even if the biological parents are not the legal guardians. It's just a fact of life. I think the name change is rather odd, imo.

I love it when people just make up new words that obscure what was formerly clear. So, instead of adding to the list of what has been known as biological reality (and truth) for ages upon ages, they're "replacing" the terms. How Marxist of them to do so.

I guess folks in New York think Analytic Philosophy can take a hike.

This has nothing to do with same-sex connections. Children are conceived with a sperm and an egg.

Not to go off topic, but so called trans men have given birth to children because they still have functioning female parts.

Because they are women not men.

Agreed. But some want to put “father” on the birth certificate instead of “mother.”
