  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Apologist John Lennox’s ‘Peace and Contentment’ Is the Most Compelling Argument for God, Says Steven Bartlett

“The Diary of a CEO” host Steven Bartlett, who is agnostic, told Christian apologist and mathematician Dr. John Lennox that the most compelling point Lennox offered for the Christian faith during their recent conversation was not any particular argument. Rather, it was a “certain peace and contentment” Lennox had about him.

“One of the most compelling arguments for God that you’ve presented…is not actually necessarily anything you’ve written in your books, or not necessarily anything you’ve said,” said Bartlett at the end of their conversation. “It is actually you. And you have a certain peace and contentment that I rarely see in people that I interview but I often see, and I’ve almost always seen, in the Christians that I’ve interviewed, and this is a interesting phenomenon for me.”

Dr. John Lennox is emeritus professor of mathematics at Oxford University. He is also a Christian apologist who has participated in debates with atheists including Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, and Peter Singer. Lennox has written numerous books, including his recent autobiography, “My Story,” and “God, AI and the End of History: Understanding the Book of Revelation in an Age of Intelligent Machines.”

I like John Lennox. The fact that he is a maths professor at Oxford lends weight to the debate with atheists about the existence of God.
No, it doesn't. If you're looking for mathematical proofs of God's existence, you're missing the point entirely.

I wish Christians valued this as much in themselves as others seem to.

Some of us are too frayed and traumatized to wade neck deep without floaties in the peace that 'surpatheth understanding.'

But I do generally like John Lennox, and while I'm not a big follower of his, I can appreciate some of the things he says, especially lately.

No, I'm not saying that you can prove God's existence mathematically. My point is that someone, like John Lennox, who has a personal relationship with Jesus yet who is an eminent mathematician, is likely to carry more weight with atheists, especially those who look to science for their answers, than a theologian would. Their response to the latter is usually "I trust science", but when someone with John Lennox's credentials, in a scientific subject, says that he believes in God they are more likely to listen.

That hasn't been my experience. IME, that's the sort of thing that sounds good to Christians, but doesn't really pan out in real life.

From what I've seen, the "I trust science" crowd is more likely to listen to you if you acknowledge that it's all based on faith and focus your attention on the metaphysical aspects of life that science can't answer.
