  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

FIFA gives Trump a peace prize in a departure from its traditional focus on sport

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump was awarded the new FIFA peace prize on Friday at the 2026 World Cup draw — giving the spectacle to set matchups for the quadrennial soccer tournament even more of a Trumpian flair.

Trump, who has openly campaigned for the Nobel Peace Prize, had been heavily expected to receive the newly created FIFA prize. FIFA president Gianni Infantino, a close ally of Trump, has said he thought Trump should have won the Nobel for his efforts to broker a ceasefire in Gaza.

WASHINGTON — It wasn’t the one he had in mind but Donald Trump did finally take home a peace prize.

Trump was the winner of the inaugural "FIFA Peace Prize," which the soccer organization awarded during its World Cup draw in Washington.

"This is truly one of the great honors of my life," Trump said as he accepted the award.
Lol what a joke.

What next, a press freedom award for MBS?

Breaking news: Eric Carle (author and illustrator of The Very Hungry Caterpillar) wins the FIFA literature prize

I think this whole debacle can be summed up by some of the comments on the BBC live text updates page:

"18:01 GMT I started this live text two hours ago."
"18:05 GMT This has been a disaster for live text commentators who are hungry and were planning to order a pizza once the draw was over."
"18:10 GMT Have you really watched a World Cup draw until you've seen Nigel de Jong applaud a performance from Lauryn Hill?"
"18:13 GMT I'm giving them two more minutes or else I'm going to make up my own World Cup draw and we can all just go home."
(First draw took place at 18:27 GMT)

Judge dismisses bribery case involving FIFA after DOJ says bribery is not a priority

Bribery? Who cares? I mean who's the victim? One person gets money, and the other gets what they want. That's capitalism!

A federal judge dismissed criminal charges against a media executive in a long-running bribery case involving FIFA after the US Justice Department said the case no longer fits the Trump administration’s priorities.

The decision came on the 11-year anniversary of DOJ’s takedown and announcement of initial charges in 2015 against 14 defendants for an alleged bribery scheme spanning over two decades. It reached into the highest levels of FIFA, the governing body for global soccer, and other entities associated with the organization. The cases caused a reckoning within FIFA, leading to the resignation of top officials.

It’s the second high-profile bribery case the Justice Department has dropped during President Donald Trump’s second term. Last year, DOJ withdrew charges against New York Mayor Eric Adams, which led to an exodus of prosecutors from the Justice Department’s public integrity section in Washington, DC, and the resignation of the acting US attorney for the Southern District of New York.

Hey, too busy. They got Comey, Brennan, James, Cook, and now apparently E Jean Carroll to go after.

'A World Cup for them not us': Fans' anger at US travel bans and visa restrictions

BBC analysis of US State Department data found that the visa rejection rate for citizens of 11 of the 48 countries that have qualified for the World Cup was higher than 40%. This includes applicants of all kinds, not just World Cup hopefuls.

That compares to an average rejection rate for B1 business and B2 tourist visa applications – the type recommended for fans going to the tournament - from all countries of 34%.

The data covers the year from October 2024 to the end of September 2025, so does not take in football fans who applied in the last eight months. The 11 countries are Ecuador, Egypt, Haiti, Algeria, Uzbekistan, Cape Verde, Jordan, Iran, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ghana and Senegal.

Somali soccer referee denied US entry, will miss World Cup debut

June 8 (Reuters) - The United States has denied entry to soccer referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan, who had been expected to be the ‌first Somali to officiate at a match in the World Cup.

A FIFA spokesperson said Artan would not be able to train or officiate at the World Cup -- which kicks off on Thursday -- after he was not allowed to enter the United States over the weekend.

Iran confirms US travel plan ahead of FIFA World Cup 2026 opener amid visa dispute

Although Iranian players secured visas required to enter the United States and compete in group-stage matches in Los Angeles and Seattle, several members of the team's delegation were reportedly denied entry permits.

Despite all three group-stage matches taking place in the United States, Iran will base its squad in Tijuana, Mexico, throughout the tournament. "In accordance with FIFA's programme, the team delegation will travel to the United States on a charter flight," the Iranian federation's spokesperson Amir Mehdi Alavi said in a statement carried by Iran's ISNA news agency.

You're even botching the propaganda sports event. Shameful display.
Can’t even do sportswashing right. It’s a shame how much we’ve lowered our standards.

Are Trump people even interested in football, er....soccer? They might not even know this event is coming up.
He'll obviously have to attend the first US game. Wanna see what the supporters think about Trump? The booing at the NBA was nothing. I don't know how many Aussies will be at our game v the US on June 20, but if Trump turns up for that one then I reckon they'll let him know as well.

The booing at the NBA game last night happened because it was in NYC, which is a dark blue Democratic Party city. Therefore, the booing was expected and easily predictable.
If the Aussies want to boo Trump if he were to show up for that game vs USA, then I'm sure they will be drowned out by chants of USA, USA, USA.

World Cup tickets for Iran fans revoked, says country's federation

Each federation for the 48 teams taking part is entitled to receive and distribute 8% of stadium capacity at the World Cup, adding up to several thousands of tickets for each game.

Just days before Iran begin their World Cup campaign on June 15 at the Los Angeles Rams' stadium in Inglewood against New Zealand, the federation claimed in a statement reported by semi-official state media that it was now unable to provide any tickets to its supporters.

FIFA has total authority over ticketing operations at the World Cup, yet the Iranian soccer body suggested "the United States has now taken steps to obstruct the presence of Iranian supporters at the stadiums."

"This incident raises serious questions about the influence of non-sporting and political considerations on the organization of the world's biggest football event," the Iranian soccer federation said.

"It's obvious when it comes to FIFA competitions as well [that] any team, including the supporters and the officials of that team, who would qualify for a World Cup need to have access to the country, otherwise there is no World Cup," Infantino said nine years ago. "That is obvious."

Sorry folks, World Cup's closed. The giant golden statue of Trump out front shoulda told ya.

IMHO, no teams from terrorist regimes should be allowed to participate in the World Cup.
What a poor attitude to show the world.

These professional athletes have nothing to do with their government's actions and have every right to represent their home country which has qualified fair and square for the tournament.

You bet the Yanks will be supporting their team. As do we all.

And the first US game is in...? L.A. And their game against Australia is where..? Seattle. Like I said, tune in to watch the crowd reaction to the Commander In Chief.

Oh great. Coming to Sofi on Friday, is he?
It's the USA opening ceremony and first game. I'd be astonished if he wasn't there. Being the holder of the galactically prestigious FIFA Peace Prize. It'd be great if he took it along and held it up to get a good crowd reaction.
