  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

We see several text of the twenty four elders in scripture..
Revelation 4:10-11
10 The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying, 11 Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.

Revelation 5:8-9
8 And when he had taken the book, the four beasts and four [and] twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of saints. 9 And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation.

So what do these twenty four elders mean and where do they come from. The Levitical priesthood was divided into twenty-four courses and it was there at the time of Jesus. We see its continuance in Zacharias in Luke 1:5-9, when the angel came to tell him while he was in the temple that he would have a son, who was John the Baptist.
Luke 1:5-9
"5 There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.
6 And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.
7 And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years.
8 And it came to pass, that while he executed the priest's office before God in the order of his course,
9 According to the custom of the priest's office, his lot was to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord."

John in Revelation, saw four and twenty elders seated upon four and twenty seats, and they worshiped the Lamb, saying, 'Thou hast redeemed us to God by Thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation; and hast made us unto our God kings and priests.'

Revelation 4:4
And round about the throne were four and twenty seats: and upon the seats I saw four and twenty elders sitting, clothed in white raiment; and they had on their heads crowns of gold.

Revelation 5:8-10
8 And when he had taken the book, the four beasts and four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of saints.
9 And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;
10 And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.

In this we see the antitype of the twenty-four courses of priests. The chiefs, or elders, of each course have seats of honor, and they are kings and priests after the order of Melchizedek. Now we see the following in Matthew 27:50-53..
Matthew 27:50-53
"50 Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.
51 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;
52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose,
53 And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many."

We see in Matthew the first fruits of those who rise from the dead after the resurrection of Christ, do they constitute the four and twenty elders? We see in Ephesians a clue: Ephesians 4:8 'Wherefore he saith, When he [Christ] ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.' The marginal reading is, he led a 'multitude of captives.' Is there a answer hidden in plain sight?

I believe the 24 elders are people among all the time line. 8 chosen from the Abrahamic age, 8 from the Mosaic age and 8 from the age of grace.

It gets real complicated why it can't be the 12 disciples or the leadership from the 12 tribes of Israel (The disciples rule Israel under David and there's indication that not all of Jacobs sons are saved.)

But to me, it makes the most sense.

Or... the 12 Patriarch's of the tribes and the 12 Apostles. Makes more sense.

The American Standard cast a whole new light on this topic. Revelation 5
American Standard Version

1 And I saw [a]in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written within and on the back, close sealed with seven seals. 2 And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a great voice, Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof? 3 And no one in the heaven, or on the earth, or under the earth, was able to open the book, or to look thereon. 4 And I wept much, because no one was found worthy to open the book, or to look thereon: 5 and one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not; behold, the Lion that is of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, hath overcome to open the book and the seven seals thereof. 6 And I saw [b]in the midst of the throne and of the four living creatures, and in the midst of the elders, a Lamb standing, as though it had been slain, having seven horns, and seven eyes, which are the [c]seven Spirits of God, sent forth into all the earth. 7 And he came, and he [d]taketh it out of the right hand of him that sat on the throne. 8 And when he had taken the book, the four living creatures and the four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having each one a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. 9 And they sing a new song, saying,
Worthy art thou to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and didst purchase unto God with thy blood men of every tribe, and tongue, and people, and nation, Note verse 9 does not say purchased us , it says purchased men. The four beasts and the 24 elders all sang the same song. I contend this translation is more accurate simply because there is no evidence the 4 beasts are redeemed men from the earth. The KJV lumps the 24 elders snd the 4 beasts into the same category. 10 and madest them to be unto our God a kingdom and priests; and they reign upon the earth.Note: verse 10 says “madest them” not “us”as in the KJV and others.
11 And I saw, and I heard a voice of many angels round about the throne and the living creatures and the elders; and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands; 12 saying with a great voice,
Worthy is the Lamb that hath been slain to receive the power, and riches, and wisdom, and might, and honor, and glory, and blessing.
13 And every created thing which is in the heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and on the sea, and all things that are in them, heard I saying,
Unto him that sitteth on the throne, and unto the Lamb, be the blessing, and the honor, and the glory, and the dominion, [e]for ever and ever.
14 And the four living creatures said, Amen. And the elders fell down and [f]worshipped.
I do not claim to know who the twenty four elders are for sure but for the reasons pointed out I do not believe they are redeemed men from the earth as I do not believe the 4 beasts are redeemed men men from the earth . IMHO both groups are likely members of the heavenly host , created beings in heavenly service to God.

I think everyone knows what 'redeemed' means, and we see Youngs Literal Translation..

Revelation 5

Young's Literal Translation

1 And I saw upon the right hand of Him who is sitting upon the throne a scroll, written within and on the back, sealed with seven seals;
2 and I saw a strong messenger crying with a great voice, `Who is worthy to open the scroll and to loose the seals of it?'
3 and no one was able in the heaven, nor upon the earth, nor under the earth, to open the scroll, nor to behold it.
4 And I was weeping much, because no one was found worthy to open and to read the scroll, nor to behold it,
5 and one of the elders saith to me, `Weep not; lo, overcome did the Lion, who is of the tribe of Judah, the root of David, to open the scroll, and to loose the seven seals of it;
6 and I saw, and lo, in the midst of the throne, and of the four living creatures, and in the midst of the elders, a Lamb hath stood as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the Seven Spirits of God, which are sent to all the earth,
7 and he came and took the scroll out of the right hand of Him who is sitting upon the throne.
8 And when he took the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell before the Lamb, having each one harps and golden vials full of perfumes, which are the prayers of the saints,
9 and they sing a new song, saying, `Worthy art thou to take the scroll, and to open the seals of it, because thou wast slain, and didst redeem us to God in thy blood, out of every tribe, and tongue, and people, and nation,
10 and didst make us to our God kings and priests, and we shall reign upon the earth.'
11 And I saw, and I heard the voice of many messengers round the throne, and the living creatures, and the elders -- and the number of them was myriads of myriads, and thousands of thousands --
12 saying with a great voice, `Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive the power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing!'
13 and every creature that is in the heaven, and in the earth, and under the earth, and the things that are upon the sea, and the all things in them, heard I saying, `To Him who is sitting upon the throne, and to the Lamb, [is] the blessing, and the honour, and the glory, and the might -- to the ages of the ages!'
14 and the four living creatures said, `Amen!' and the twenty-four elders fell down and they bow before Him who is living to the ages of the ages.

Now if we look at the definition its pretty straightforward...

redeem

verb

re·deem ri-ˈdēm

redeemed; redeeming; redeems
Synonyms of redeem

Simple Definition A Simple Definition is available from our Learner's Dictionary to help you understand the meaning faster.
transitive verb
1
a
: to buy back : repurchase
b
: to get or win back

2
: to free from what distresses or harms: such as
a
: to free from captivity by payment of ransom
b
: to extricate from or help to overcome something detrimental
c
: to release from blame or debt : clear
d
: to free from the consequences of sin

3
: to change for the better : reform

4
: repair, restore

5
a
: to free from a lien by payment of an amount secured thereby
b(1)
: to remove the obligation of by payment
the U.S. Treasury redeems savings bonds on demand

(2)
: to exchange for something of value
redeem trading stamps

c
: to make good : fulfill

6
a
: to atone for : expiate
redeem an error

b(1)
: to offset the bad effect of
(2)
: to make worthwhile : retrieve

Now for Christians, "redeemed" refers to the act of being rescued from sin and its consequences through the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ. So in this context I would tend to '2d: to free from the consequences of sin' rather than '1a: to buy back : repurchase'.

I am not sure why the focus here is on the word ,”redeemed”. I have no problem with the definition of redeemed. I tried to point out that in the original Greek and in the ASV version that neither the 24 elders or the four beast are the redeemed from the earth by His blood. Those two groups spoke of the redeemed of the earth.

I believe the 24 elders are split into the 12 Apostle (NT) & the 12 heads of the tribes of Judah. It would make sense that Divine Providence would preserve a role for these folks.
Yes, there were 12 apostles, but how about Barnabas and Paul?

Act 14:14 But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard of it, they tore their robes and rushed out into the crowd, crying out

Barnabas and Paul, I was musing about Judas as one of the apostles, dont think he will stand up on any level.
