It's really cool for an author/artist like me to see that the reader grasps the message in her story, and the characters in it seem to come to life for you, too! You seem to understand the essence of the plot, and it makes me happy to see I was able to get that message across clearly. Again, thanks for sharing your interesting thoughts!:)

It's been a while since I posted on this thread. I didn't know if people would be interested, but I finally decided to post the last two chapters of La La Mermaid Volume 1 here for you all to enjoy. So here they are! :) (I had to split each chapter into two parts, though, because CF won't allow a post that is over 18,000 characters.)

Chapter 4:

Crystal’s Secret!

“I can’t believe it…! Am I actually…a mermaid?!”

Bright spotlights gleamed overhead and beautiful, waltz-like music played as a mermaid with long, flowing hair emerged from a glistening pool of water. Diving underwater again, she clasped hands with a handsome water spirit. They danced and twirled with the water’s currents as they gradually became more hazy and indistinct.

“Who are you…?” The water spirit whispered in the mermaid’s ear.

Crystal’s eyelids slowly opened as the late morning sunlight fell all around her. “...What a pretty dream…” she murmured drowsily. As she opened her eyes more widely, they fell upon a shell-shaped pendant and a matching compact on her nightstand beside her.

“EEP!! That’s right!!!” Crystal bolted upright in her bed. She tried to jump out of it, but her legs got tangled in the sheets, so she crashed onto the floor. “O—owww…” she moaned. She rubbed her forehead and staggered to her knees. Her hands clutched the nightstand as she stared at the strange objects again. “...It’s not a dream! The pendant and the compact! They’re the ones that that strange cat and jellyfish gave me!! Their magic turned me into a mermaid…and I performed in that water ballet!”

Then, she suddenly remembered another odd token from the previous night. Behind the two objects, a corked, glass bottle stood, filled with blue water lilies and a rolled-up piece of paper.
1772847276693.png
“AAAAAAAAH!!! And the note!!!” Crystal recalled the water ballet dancer who had performed with her the previous night. After his show, he had tossed a glass bottle into the moonlit sea.

Crystal held her head in agony. “HOW CAN LIFE BECOME SO COMPLICATED AFTER JUST ONE NIGHT??!!” she shouted.

“Cryssy, what’s the matter? Did you have a bad dream?” Crystal faintly heard a maternal-sounding voice shout to her from the floor below.
Crystal gasped. She hurriedly stood up and tossed the pendant and compact into the drawer of her nightstand. But she pulled the note out of the bottle before tossing the latter into the drawer with the other strange objects.

Crystal yawned as she took some croissants out of the oven. “What should I do?” she thought. “Should I tell Mama about what happened last night…?”

“Crystal, did you stay up late painting, again?” Her mother Michelle stared at her curiously.

At these words, Crystal flinched nervously and thought, “L—little does she know I was up late last night because I was performing in a water ballet!!” To her mother, she nervously chuckled and said, “N—no, I wasn’t painting last night! Why would you think that…?!”

“Because you weren’t in bed wast night!” Crystal’s 5-year-old sister Sandy declared cheerfully.

Crystal’s youngest sister Misty, who sat beside Sandy at the table, echoed, “Weren’t in bed!”

Startled by these words, Crystal picked up one of the hot croissants without thinking, burning her fingers. “Owowowoow! So hot!” she whimpered.
“Crystal! You’re so clumsy!” Michelle scolded her. Then, she put some ruby-red strawberries on the table and turned to her other daughter. “Sandy, what are you talking about? What does she mean, Cryssy?”

“Sean always goes to the beach early to surf, but no one ever minds that…” Crystal mumbled as she blew her fingers to cool them down. Sometimes, it seemed like her brother could get away with anything.

But she was interrupted by her mother, who looked out the kitchen window and exclaimed, “...Oh, Crystal, look! Remember that beautiful mansion across the street that has been vacant for so long? I think someone’s finally moving in!”

“—Oh?” Crystal peered curiously out the window as well. She saw several moving men carrying things like a beautiful, shiny, black grand piano as well as a gleaming, dolphin sculpture. “What a beautiful piano…! Maybe a musician is moving in…”

At that moment, Crystal heard an oddly familiar voice. “...Yes, right this way. I’ll show you where that will go.” A tall man with wavy, blue hair was instructing the moving men where to put some large, framed art pieces. Crystal gasped and frantically thought, “Is that…the water ballet performer…Florian Marino?!!”

“Such a house and furniture...He seems to be quite wealthy…” Michelle commented in awe.

Crystal continued to panic inwardly. “I CAN’T BELIEVE IT…! FLORIAN MARINO IS GOING TO BE OUR NEW NEIGHBOR??!!” She burst out, “WAAAAAAAAAH!!! THIS HAS GOT TO BE A BAD DREAM!!!”

***

“Prune those roses over there, Crystal. I have to get the spade for the new bulbs.”

Later, as Crystal helped garden the front lawn, she watched her mother walk away to get her tools. Then, the turquoise-haired girl stared thoughtfully across the street at Florian’s new house. Neither the moving men nor the owner were in sight. “Florian Marino…he’s an amazingly talented water ballet performer who even directs his own shows…! I still can’t believe I performed alongside him last night…!”

She pulled out the note she had put in her pocket earlier. She read its contents again. “And now…he wants me to continue to perform as his lead water ballerina!” She sighed, looking up at the blue sky and the swaying palm trees that lined the street. “What should I do…? And with Florian living so close by…what if he recognizes me…?”

“...It’s a beautiful day today, isn’t it?”

Crystal jumped, letting out a little squeak. She shoved the note in her pocket and turned around. She came face-to-face with Florian, who shaded his eyes with his hand as he glanced up at the palm trees. He smiled. “...The sunlight shining on the palm trees…their branches seem to wave and glisten just like party streamers, don’t you think?”

Crystal blushed, trying to hide her face under her wide-brimmed straw hat. “Uhh—w—well, um…!”

At that moment, Michelle reappeared, carrying her spade and an armful of floral bulbs. “Why, hello! I believe you’re our new neighbor, aren’t you?”

Warmly shaking hands with Michelle, Florian replied, “Yes, my name is Florian Marino! I suppose you’ve seen me getting settled in. On such a day as this, though, one doesn’t wish to be cooped up inside all day long!”

As Florian and Michelle continued to talk, Crystal awkwardly stood, head lowered and tongue-tied, her thoughts racing. “What if he brings up that note in front of Mama? What should I say?”
She looked around for an excuse to escape but only spotted a white cat with long limbs up the street. It sprang gracefully from a vine-covered fence and landed nimbly on the overgrown grass of an empty lot. The white cat seemed oddly familiar. Seeing its blue sailor cap, she finally remembered. “It’s that strange cat that wanted me to perform in the water ballet last night!!”

Suddenly, it spotted the turquoise-haired girl and started running toward her. Crystal jumped back and squealed loudly, “Eeek!! It’s after me, too!!” She turned to run away, but she tripped over a watering can beside her. By this point, the white cat was now standing next to the sprawling girl on the grass. It placed a paw impatiently on her arm as though it wanted her to get up.

Florian and Michelle stopped speaking, turning their heads to see what was causing the commotion. “Crystal, what’s wrong? It’s only a cat!” her mother chided. “You see, Florian, my daughter’s afraid of cats! Whenever they see her, they always seem to want to chase her!”

Florian didn’t seem to hear her, though. He seemed surprised to see the white cat there, as though he were familiar with it somehow. But, after a moment, he regained his composure. He bent down and started gently stroking the cat. “What a pretty kitty you are!” Florian murmured, smiling. The cat purred contentedly and licked his hand.

Standing up again, Florian addressed Crystal’s mother. “...You know, Mrs. La Rey, maybe they sense something special about your daughter. Where I come from, cats are greatly esteemed as divine beings and guardians of nature!” Crystal’s mother didn’t know what to make of this odd statement and could only chuckle nervously and change the subject.

After talking for a few more minutes, Florian waved goodbye and walked back to his house. As soon as he left, Michelle elbowed her daughter. “Crystal! You didn’t say one word to Florian! And he was so nice to come and introduce himself! You know, I don’t think it’s good for you to be cooped up inside painting all day!”

Crystal rubbed her head and chuckled nervously. Her mother, staring at the house that belonged to Florian, mused, “...He told me he is a director and performer of his own water ballet company…But is it just me or does he seem a little…eccentric?”
Crystal stared thoughtfully in the direction of Florian’s house as well. Then, she noticed that the mysterious, white cat from before was gone. “I wonder…was that Celeste…?” she pondered.

Early the next day, on a cold, overcast morning, Crystal was painting outside at the front of her house. A white, picket fence as well as a hedge encircled the area where she sat. On the picket fence grew vines with little, trumpet-like flowers. The profuse growth of greenery and blossoms half-hid Crystal from the view of her neighbors and made this spot feel safe and private. Being in the fresh air both invigorated and inspired her.

Seated on a white, wicker chair surrounded by her paints and paintbrushes, she discontentedly studied her half-finished painting. She had tried to depict shining palm trees and soaring seagulls. “...It was such a beautiful day yesterday and, yet, I can’t seem to capture it very well…” Without realizing it, Crystal stared thoughtfully at Florian’s white mansion through the brambles of her hedge. The blue, tile roof shone in the sun. She recalled the beautiful water ballet show she had been a part of the other night and smiled. “...It was all so magical…” Lost in pleasant daydreams, she half-consciously replaced her canvas for a blank one and began painting again.

As Crystal continued to paint, Florian stepped out of his house and walked briskly toward his car. There was a slight opening in Crystal’s hedge that made visible the dreamy face of the turquoise-haired girl. She was bent down with interest at some engrossing activity he couldn’t see. This caught Florian’s eye as well as captured his interest. Smiling, he left his air of busyness behind him, treading slyly across the street.

Absorbed in her painting, Crystal gasped in surprise when she heard a low, lyrical voice playfully say, “Hello! I’ve been wanting to speak to you!” The painter girl jerked her head up and saw Florian, who, having walked around the hedge, was staring down at her. She jumped from her seat, and, bumping her knee against the table, knocked her paints and paintbrushes to the ground.

Florian offered to help Crystal clean up the mess, but she refused and hurriedly picked up the art supplies herself. She once again blushed a bright pink as she lowered her head. She tensely thought, “...Is this it? Is he finally going to ask me?”

Florian continued, “I’m so sorry! I saw you from across the street, and you looked so picturesque painting here, framed by this lovely foliage, you piqued my curiosity!”

Crystal shyly replied, “...I like to paint here because it’s so pretty, yet the hedge makes it discreet…” She stared at Florian sheepishly. “...But I guess not discreet enough!”

Before he pulled out a chair to sit down, Florian politely asked, “May I?” Crystal hesitantly nodded in assent. Seating himself, he began. “The other day, when I purchased my house, I saw you racing down the street, but you didn’t see me.”

Crystal, embarrassed, replied, “I—I’m sorry! I must have seemed very rude, not even offering you a welcome or anything like that!”

Florian shook his head empathetically. “No, not at all! I knew you were immersed in artistic inspiration! And…” He smiled at Crystal, his soft, aqua-blue eyes looking into hers. “...you seem like such a shy, sensitive soul…”

Crystal looked down to the ground again, mortified. “Great, that’s just a nice way of saying I’m a socially awkward person!” Then, something Florian had said made her curiously ask, “...Oh, I guess I was artistically inspired, though, when you saw me that time, but…how did you know that?”

Florian laughingly answered, “Well, I think it was that bag of yours that looked just large enough to hold an easel and a canvas inside!” Then, he paused thoughtfully, adding, “But I suppose I’ve been an artist long enough to recognize that glowing look of inspiration on one’s face.”

Crystal, gradually opening up to the gentle, friendly man, slowly smiled. “When you say artist…you mean a water ballet performer, right?” With her bright, blue eyes sparkling, she added, “I—I saw your rehearsal the other day…I had never seen a water ballet before…” She closed her eyes, reliving the memory. “...It was one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen in my whole life.”

Florian graciously smiled. “Why, thank you! I’m sure that’s quite the compliment coming from an artist like you!” Then, glancing at the canvas on her easel, Florian leaned over, asking, “Is that your latest project?”

“Oh!” Crystal looked at the painting she had been working on before Florian approached her. It was a loose, unfinished painting of him in his water ballet costume. “I wasn’t even completely aware of what I was painting!” She turned her head up to the sky with a dreamy, far-off look in her eyes. “...I only remember thinking of the water spirit from your water ballet…and, then, I guess I just started to paint him!” She put away her painting, embarrassed. “I’m sorry, it’s not very good. I usually don’t paint people…”

Crystal changed the subject. “So, um…if you don’t mind my asking, did you move here for your job?”

In a flash of a moment, Crystal detected something like sadness in the man’s usually serene-looking eyes. With a distant expression on his face, Florian smiled weakly. “Yes…yes, you could say that…”

Sensing she had said something wrong, Crystal tried to say something soothing to him. “O—oh, how nice! Many artists like to call Sea Star Village their home because they find it so beautiful to live by the sea.”

At her words, Florian’s attention was roused, and he said with interest, “...Is that so? Do you know any of them?”

Crystal, a little surprised by the sudden energy in his voice, replied, “U—um, no, not personally. But there are many professional artists here such as painters, jewelers, potters, glassmakers, and many others!”

Florian leaned back in his chair, replying politely yet disinterestedly, “Oh, I see…They must be very talented.” He got up from his chair. “...I’m sorry I’ve taken up so much of your artistic time—Crystal, was it? I merely stopped by to offer my services to you.” He smiled whimsically and warmly held out his hand. “Please, if there is any way I can be of help in your artistic pursuits, don’t hesitate to ask me. I consider it a sort of sacred duty of mine to cultivate the soil of blossoming artists.”

Crystal stared at him a moment, timid and unsure. “...Was that all he wanted to say to me?” she thought. But she politely shook his hand. “...Thank you.”

When Florian had left, Crystal heaved a sigh of relief. “I guess he still doesn’t know it was me who performed with him in the water ballet!” Then, she became thoughtful. “...But why would he want to help someone like me? We barely know each other. How strange…”

A voice behind Crystal said, “Florian Marino is a very generous person who recognizes the special potential in artists…”

Startled, Crystal jumped and turned around. The white cat from the previous day stood before her, accompanied by a sparkling jellyfish creature. “Celeste and Stella!!”

The bubbly jellyfish turned to the cat with the blue sailor cap and giggled in delight. “Wow, Celeste, she actually remembers our names! We only met once, after all!”

Crystal rummaged through her bag beside her and pulled out the shell-shaped compact and the matching shell-shaped pendant. “These items you gave me…they transformed me into a mermaid so I could perform with Florian!” Her voice quivered as she added urgently, “Please, tell me…do you think he suspects who I really am?!”

Celeste calmly sauntered toward the girl, her tail curling like a ribbon. “Mm, maybe…”

Crystal felt her heart race in panic. “Oh—!! Oh, no, I was afraid this would happen! What should I d—”

“More importantly, we saw you take the bottle that night. Even if he doesn’t recognize you, what do you intend to do about the note?” With her luminous, golden eyes, Celeste stared searchingly at Crystal for the answer.

Crystal looked as though a realization had just dawned on her. “...Is that why you visited me yesterday?” She pulled the note out of her pocket, disturbed. “...I—I saw Florian throw a bottle into the water…I had a feeling it was for the mermaid who swam with him—me—so…I fished it out and found a note inside…” She read its contents. “Florian Marino wants me to perform with him in his next show.”

Seeing the girl’s distress, Stella was confused. “Crystal, why don’t you want Florian to know it was you who played the mermaid princess?”

Still looking troubled, Crystal replied, “...Well, I’m not sure I want to be a water ballerina…Apart from possessing magical talents that aren’t really mine, I’m afraid I won’t have time for painting anymore…” She looked sadly at the canvas in her bag. “...And it’s my dream to have my paintings on display in La Mer, the local art gallery here…”

Crystal stood up and tried to say in a firm tone, “Please, find another girl to help Florian…I’m only an average girl who can’t even swim without the help of magic.”

In response to Crystal’s plea, Celeste lowered her head and closed her eyes. “...Fine, then. But I think it is only fair to warn you that by refusing to help us in our mission, you also turn your back on your own mission.”

Crystal looked confused. “Wh–what do you mean?”

Celeste stared closely at the turquoise-haired girl. “Crystal, remember what we told you when we first met? Stella and I are fairies of the underwater kingdom Stelamarinus.”

Crystal suddenly recalled the fairies’ words to her that day. “Yes, I remember! The other day, you told me of your mission, and that’s why you came to help Florian.”

Celeste nodded. “That is correct. Though you may be unaware of this legend, it is said that the gift of creativity was bestowed on human beings long ago by the ruler of Stelamarinus. Because of the deep connection between humans and ourselves, the fairies of Stelamarinus have always come to the aid of human artists throughout history in order to spread the art of beauty in its many forms.”

“How beautiful! I’ve never heard of such a story!” Crystal breathed, entranced by the tale.

“Yes, but there is a dark side to it…” Celeste grew serious. “...If both humans and the people of Stelamarinus fail to cooperate in this goal, the lack of beauty in your world will cause it to fall into one of sadness and despair.”

Crystal was shocked by these words. “‘Sadness and despair’?!”

Stella chimed in. “Yes! In your world, Crystal, instead of creating art to uplift the spirits of others, artists will sometimes choose to create art for solely selfish, shallow reasons such as wealth and fame. That’s why we came to help Florian! He almost became consumed with those same desires!”

Crystal gasped. “He did?!”

“Yes, we came to his aid because he wished to experience a sense of renewal as an artist. Crystal…if you refuse to help us now, you will also turn your back on artists like Florian who have so much to give to your world!”

“I…I had no idea that art was so important for this world…I feel so selfish…If I don’t help artists like Florian, it’ll be my fault if this world falls into sadness and despair…!”

Stella floated beside Crystal and wrapped a tentacle around her arm. “And don’t worry, Crystal! You’ll still get to express yourself through water ballet—it’s just a different art form!”

Crystal looked thoughtful. “...’Express myself’...? Well, it’s true my painting hasn’t been going very well lately…” She looked up at Florian’s house. “...Maybe becoming a water ballerina will provide some sort of inspiration for my own art…” After a moment, she turned toward the magical creatures again, trying to appear determined. “...All right, I—I’ll try. I…do have another reason as well…”

Celeste’s eyes gleamed knowingly. “...You wish to help Florian, don’t you?”

Crystal held a hand up to her heart, thinking of the look of expectation Florian had for the water ballerina she had replaced. For some reason, she never showed up for the performance. “Yes…I don’t want to let him down…”

Celeste’s and Stella’s faces lit up joyfully. “In that case...” Celeste took the magical shell pendant from Crystal’s hand, holding it in her mouth. “...you’ll need the Seashimmer Pendant to swim!” Leaping swiftly, she clasped the pendant around Crystal’s neck.

“And don’t worry about Florian discovering your true identity…” Stella grabbed the magical shell compact. “...If you use the makeup in the Merlala Pact, it’ll transform you into an older version of yourself! And change your outfit! I particularly like this accessory!” She handed Crystal the compact. “Try it! Just utter the words, ‘Magical Mermaid Pearl-Essence Transformation’!”

After Crystal repeated the words, the compact opened, and the bottom mirror was magically replaced with sparkling makeup. As soon as Crystal applied it, she became enveloped in a cloud of glitter. When the haze had vanished, she appeared slightly older, and her hair was tied up in a bun with a cute, pink bow. She wore a tracksuit of the same color, embellished with glittery, blue stripes on the arms and legs. Crystal looked at herself in awe. “What’s…with this outfit…?”
2 (1).jpg

Stella winked playfully. “Silly! It’s for water ballet practice!”

Crystal stared at her, blinking cluelessly. “...Um…why?”

Celeste couldn’t believe what Crystal was saying. “For your new job, of course!! Remember Florian’s note?!”

Crystal suddenly remembered. “Oh, that’s right! In the letter, he wrote…” She pulled it out and read it. “‘...If you wish to take the job, please meet me at the Sea Star Aquatic Center at 10:00 AM.’ I think I know where that’s located but I’d better hurry!”

As Crystal raced off, Celeste and Stella trailed behind her. “We’re coming, too!"

Chapter 5:

The Turbulent Water Ballet Audition!

At the appointed time, Crystal approached the Sea Star Aquatic Center and stood in front of the big building. She looked up at it, thinking, “M—maybe this wasn’t such a good idea…” She glanced behind her. “...And I don’t see Celeste and Stella anywhere… I thought they were coming with me…”

When Crystal walked into the lobby, she was greeted by an eager, male voice. “Oh! It’s you! You received my letter!” Crystal turned and saw Florian’s tall physique leaning against the wall expectantly. His eyes lit up, and he came toward her. Grasping her hand and shaking it, he added, “I’m so delighted you’re here! You are a very talented water ballerina!”

Now that Crystal saw Florian up close, she noticed he was wearing a tracksuit-like outfit similar to hers, except his was white and deep blue. Crystal thought it was odd seeing him dressed in such a way. Florian’s personality was so whimsical and carefree, she thought it embodied a costume like the water spirit’s better than it did the mere functionality of sports clothes.

Though still nervous, Crystal tried to confidently meet his gaze. “Th—thank you! It was a pleasure working with you as well!”

Florian was about to usher her down a hall. “Please, come with me and we can begin—”

“Not without us!”

Two women burst open the front doors and confidently walked up to Florian. One was tall, her silvery-white hair in a long, ribbon-like ponytail. The other was slightly shorter, and her mint-green hair was half up in two buns while the rest of it brushed past her shoulders.

6.jpg

Crystal stared at them, thinking, “Why do they seem sort of familiar…?”

Florian turned to the two women. “Uh, excuse me, can I help you ladies with something?”

The silver-haired woman put her hands on her hips, smirking. “On the contrary! We came to help our client with something!”

Elbowing her friend out of the way, the woman with the mint-green hair added energetically, “That’s right! I’m Stella, and this is Celeste! We’re here to make sure your water ballet company is the right fit for our client!”

Hearing their names, Crystal gasped, thinking, “Celeste and Stella?! D—did they say ‘client’?!”

Florian looked confused. “By ‘your client’, do you mean this woman here? Are you perhaps her managers or something?”

Stella winked playfully and put an arm around Crystal. “That’s right! I’m Cry—uh—I mean, her personal coach, and Celeste is her manager!”

Crystal couldn’t believe what she was hearing. “‘Coach’ and ‘manager’?! Just what are they up to?!”

“Hey, watch what you say! Are you trying to blow Crystal’s cover or something?!” Celeste whispered to Stella in an irritated tone.

“Sorry, Celeste, but she doesn’t—”

Before Stella could finish, they heard Florian answer, “I see…Well, I suppose it would be all right for both of you to watch our practice routine.” He turned to Crystal again. “Now then, shall we begin? Oh, I forgot, I didn’t even ask your name!”

Crystal, Celeste, and Stella jumped in alarm. Stella whispered to Celeste, “That’s what I was trying to tell you! She doesn’t have an alternate name!”
Celeste frantically whispered back, “W—what now? She can’t use her real one!”

Flustered, Crystal was speechless. She darted her eyes around the room for an idea. They fell upon a water lily design on Florian’s jacket. “Water lily…lily…” she contemplated. Then she mumbled, “U—uh, Li…Lilliana…um…” Water lilies suddenly reminded her of La Mer, the boutique and art gallery near her home. It was known for its paintings of mermaids swimming in lagoons filled with the same aquatic flowers. “...La Mer! Lilliana La Mer. I—it’s a…stage name.”

Celeste and Stella heaved sighs of relief. Florian smiled, seeming to like the sound of the name. “Lilliana La Mer…you know, you remind me of someone…” He paused, thoughtful, then said, “...Do you know a girl named Crystal La Rey?”

Stella started to panic again, turning to Celeste. “Wh—what now?! The jig is up!!”

“W—well, um, y—yeah, I guess—!” Crystal began.

“They’re, um—very close!” Celeste hastily finished for her.

“That makes sense! They’re both so much alike,” Florian replied unsuspectingly.

“Closer than you’d think!” Stella murmured to Celeste. Crystal chuckled nervously.

Florian walked toward the hall again. “All right, shall we begin practice now? Everyone, follow me—”

“Wait just a minute!!”

At that moment, another woman swung open the lobby doors. She wore a tracksuit, and her long, wavy, peachy-pink hair was tied back in a ponytail. She glared menacingly, pointing at Florian. “How dare you set this up behind my back?! The role of the mermaid princess belongs to me!!”

Everyone stared at the pink-haired woman causing the disturbance. Crystal gasped, thinking, “I remember her! She was the stand-in for the lead water ballerina who never showed up for the water ballet performance!”

Florian calmly turned to face the angry woman. “Coraline, I had no intention of keeping this from you. But you see…” He smiled at Crystal. “...This is Lilliana La Mer. I was so pleased with her performance as the mermaid princess the other day, I wish to hire her for the next performance of ‘The Mermaid Princess and the Water Spirit’!”

Crystal winced when she saw Coraline’s face turn more crimson than a red water lily. The tall stand-in stomped over to her rival and towered intimidatingly over her. “Oh, so just because Miss Tadpole arrives on the scene, you hand her the role on a silver platter! After your desired water ballerina didn’t show up, you promised the role to me, her stand-in, remember?!”

Celeste stepped in front of Crystal. “Hey, some personal space for my client! Don’t make me get tough!”

Stella chimed in as well. “Yeah, why can’t you just accept defeat gracefully?!”

Even though Coraline backed off, she replied smugly, “Hmph, you guys don’t make the rules! Come on, Florian, this isn’t some fairy tale! The role of the mermaid princess belongs to the one who is more talented and experienced! And that’s me!!”

After a moment’s thought, Florian closed his eyes and lowered his head. “I see…I have been amiss...”

The four women turned to look at the water ballet director. He continued, “...You’re right, Coraline, I should have given you the chance to audition for the role. In some ways, as a stand-in, it is your right to have a chance.” Putting a hand on Crystal’s shoulder, he added, “I’m sorry, Lilliana, but if you are as talented as I remember, you won’t have any trouble with this audition.”

Crystal felt herself break into a nervous sweat. “Coraline…I saw her rehearsing as the mermaid princess on the day of the water ballet. How does a novice water ballerina like me stand a chance against such a highly-skilled professional as her?!”

Coraline flipped her hair over her shoulder in smug satisfaction. “Hmph, I knew you’d see it my way! After all, why hire some fly-by-night when you know how perfect I am for the role?”

As the four women followed Florian to the area where they would audition, Celeste whispered confidently to Crystal, “Crystal, don’t worry. Remember the magic—it won’t fail you!”

“...‘M—magic’...? Oh—!” Crystal looked down at the Seashimmer Pendant she was wearing. It seemed to gleam encouragingly. Then, she looked up at Celeste again, smiling. “I’m glad you came, Celeste. You, too, Stella! I didn’t know you could both turn into humans!”

Stella, who was also beside Crystal, winked cheerfully. “As magical creatures from another world, it’s a good idea for us to keep a low profile! But we still wanted to be here to help you, Crystal!”

Florian threw a glance at Crystal and Coraline behind him. To himself, he thought, “...It is best this way. This audition may serve as a valuable lesson for the both of them...”

When they all reached a gym-like room, Florian announced, “This is where we will begin the audition.”

When Crystal laid eyes on the utilitarian design of the room with its ugly-looking training equipment, she was puzzled. “Why isn’t there a swimming pool in here?”

Florian answered, “...As you know, water ballet is an art form that is a combination of swimming and ballet. So, this audition will be split into three parts: warm-ups, ballet, and swimming. Whoever proves to be more skilled in all three of these fields will be given the role of the mermaid princess!”

“‘Warm-ups’? But what does that have to do with water ballet?” Crystal asked.

Coraline removed her jacket, revealing a bright pink sleeveless top underneath. “How did you even make it as a water ballerina? Before you can even begin to swim, you have to limber up your body by stretching to increase flexibility and to avoid the risk of injury.”

“Yes, the role of the mermaid princess is one of beauty and grace, but it is made so through rigorous training to strengthen the body.” Florian smiled, adding, “Many people don’t know, for instance, that we incorporate things like weight-lifting into our everyday exercise routine!”

Astounded, Crystal repeated, “W—weight-lifting’?!”

Seeing Crystal turn pale, Celeste grabbed her arm and whispered, “Come on, Crystal! You promised you’d try!”

Fear overcoming her, Crystal shook her head vigorously. “No way! I can’t lift weights! The heaviest things I’ve ever carried are a canvas and an easel!”

Stella also hissed in the scared girl’s ear. “Crystal! Remember why you’re doing this!”

“Lilliana! Is anything wrong?”

Hearing his words, Crystal turned to look at Florian. “...Why I’m doing this…” she mused, staring into Florian’s expectant eyes as he waited for her response. “Florian…I…I don’t want to let you down…” Smiling, Crystal tried to answer airily. “N—no! I’m ready!”
“Very good! Who would like to go first?”

“I will!” Coraline confidently walked to the center of the room. Crystal, though anxious, thought, “I should watch her closely. Then, maybe I can copy her moves!”

According to Florian’s request, Coraline demonstrated various stretching exercises, as well as her stamina on the treadmill. Crystal was amazed. “Even though she looks so beautiful and delicate, she has such incredible strength! I never would’ve thought such a thing was needed for water ballet!”

“Thank you, Coraline.” Florian stared thoughtfully at the pink-haired woman as she walked to the sidelines again, her head held high proudly. After a moment of silence, he continued, “Lilliana, it’s your turn now.”

Crystal felt her heart stop beating for a minute. But she clutched the Seashimmer Pendant determinedly and walked to the center of the room. “Let’s see…first, she started with stretching exercises…” As Crystal sat on the floor, she tried doing it exactly as she remembered. “This looks like it’s gonna hurt…!” she winced. She was surprised, however, by how limber her body felt.

Then, she ran on one of the treadmills. The machine went so fast that Crystal almost tripped and fell. But she caught herself just in time and discovered that her legs were able to quickly adapt to the fast pace. “It’s like I have a completely different body!” she observed in awe.

When Crystal finished, Stella roughly slapped her on the back. “Good job, Lilliana, but you seem a little winded today! Gotta tone up if you want to get ahead, right?”

Celeste enthusiastically thrust a fist high into the air and added, “Yeah! Remember: no guts, no glory!”

Crystal panted, feeling a little annoyed. “I think they’re taking this manager and coach thing a little too far…!” she muttered.

After having watched Crystal, Coraline smirked. “Hmph, just as I thought! She’s in no condition for the role! It was just beginner’s luck that she performed so well the other night!”

Though Florian thanked Crystal, he looked strangely solemn. “All right, that concludes the warm-up segment. Now onto the next one: ballet!” He turned to Crystal and Coraline. “Once you both have changed into ballet attire, meet me in the ballet studio across the hall.”

As Florian and Coraline walked out of the room, Crystal turned to Celeste and Stella, looking worried. “‘Change’?! But I didn’t come with any ballet attire!”

Stella rummaged through Crystal’s bag and pulled out the Merlala Pact. “That’s what this is for, Crystal! Remember, you can change your appearance with this!”

Crystal heaved a sigh of relief. “You’re right! I keep forgetting!” Taking the compact, she closed her eyes. Let’s see, what were the words again…? Um…Magical Mermaid Essential Transcendence!”

Stella burst out laughing while Celeste shouted, “No, no! It’s ‘Magical Mermaid Pearl-Essence Transformation’!”

Crystal, embarrassed, whined, “Ugh, how do you expect me to remember such a long name?!” But she repeated the words, and her tracksuit transformed into the practice attire of a graceful ballerina. She wore a ruffly, white shrug and a flouncy, blue wrap skirt over a pink leotard and thin, filmy tights. She looked down at her feet and saw that they were wrapped in satiny, pink ballet slippers. “They’re so pretty!” she breathed. “Still…I hope I can do better this time. I don’t think Florian was very impressed by my warm-ups…”

Stella put a hand on Crystal’s shoulder. “Well, he’s a professional water ballet director. He expects a lot from people. But don’t worry, just watch Coraline closely and do exactly what she does!”

Crystal looked confused. “I did watch her before, but now that I think of it…how did I do that? I seemed to just instantly know all the warm-up exercises without having practiced them beforehand!”

Celeste held a finger up matter-of-factly. “Well, that’s how the magic works! You see, you can execute any exercise, dance step, or swim stroke perfectly without practice…as long as you have seen it done at least once.”

Crystal sighed. “I guess not even magic is as perfect as you’d think!”

Stella shrugged and chuckled sheepishly. “Well, the Seashimmer Pendant and the Merlala Pact are still prototypes! Maybe we can work out the kinks over time!”

Crystal stared in disbelief. “Whaaaat…?! Magic has kinks…?!”

When Celeste, Stella, and Crystal entered the dance studio, the blue-haired girl’s eyes grew wide. A long, gleaming mirror covered one wall, and a smooth, slender barre stood beside it. The light-colored floor was made of polished wood. It seemed to glow and reflect the light from the window almost as much as the mirror, bathing the studio in a flood of light. Florian was there, along with Coraline, who was practicing at the barre. She wore a leotard, an off-the-shoulder sweater, and leg warmers.

Florian greeted Crystal when she stepped inside. “Oh, you’re finally here! Now we can begin the next segment of the audition: ballet! As you are auditioning for a part in a water ballet, it is only fitting you have a clear knowledge of various, pivotal ballet moves. I am going to test that knowledge now.”

Crystal’s eyes sparkled. “Wow, there’s so much that goes into the art of water ballet!” she thought.

“All right, who would like to go first?” Florian asked.

Crystal waved her hand awkwardly at her rival. “O—oh—um—you go ahead, Coraline!” To herself, Crystal thought nervously, “...She has to go first or I’m not going to know how to perform a single step…!”

Coraline was only too happy to perform first. Florian stared at Crystal, smiling at her good-naturedness. Then, following Florian’s commands, Coraline executed several ballet moves such as the arabesque, chassé, and grand pirouette. Crystal found herself mesmerized by Coraline’s skill. “She exhibits so much power! Yet…she is so graceful, too…!”

“Boy, did you see those series of turns?! Crystal sure has some stiff competition…!” Stella told Celeste anxiously.

“Your routine is as flawless as always, Coraline…” Florian said to her. Coraline smiled with satisfaction at his praise, but she failed to notice that there was a hint of dissatisfaction in the tone. He turned to Crystal. “Lilliana, you may proceed. Start with a chassé and end with an arabesque.”
Crystal walked to the center of the room. “Let’s see, that looks like…” She closed her eyes, envisioning the steps. She nimbly hopped sideways several times, one foot rhythmically after the other. Then, she finished by spreading out her arms. She stood on one leg, while the other was extended high behind her.

Though not as powerful as Coraline, there was an incredibly airy and fluid quality to her dancing. She looked like a graceful swan unfurling its wings as though she would take flight at any moment. This image of the aquatic bird seemed to embody the gentle, lovely woman so well that the resemblance was uncanny in Florian’s mind.

“Pfft! Any water ballerina can pull off those basic moves!” muttered Coraline, seeing her skill, yet refusing to be impressed.

But Celeste and Stella beamed happily. “She looks just like a real dancer!” Stella quietly exclaimed.

“All right, now grand pirouette!” Florian keenly watched, thinking, “…This will reveal just how high her level of skill is!”

At this command from Florian, Crystal thought for a moment, unsure. Seeing Crystal struggling to remember the dance move, Celeste subtly twirled her finger in an attempt to show her the motion that was used. “Oh, that’s right!” Catching the movement, Crystal went en pointe and broke forth in a series of energetic twirls, arms raised in an arc above her. Everyone was amazed by the way she was able to spin rapidly without wobbling. “Once I start, it all comes out so naturally! It’s so much fun!” Crystal twirled so much, though, that she fell to the floor, exhausted.

Celeste and Stella gasped. They quickly put Crystal’s arms around their shoulders while they supported her. Stella chuckled nervously. “Yep, no doubt about it! Lilliana really shines when she’s doing ballet! Looks like she got just an eensy bit too enthusiastic this time, though!”

Walking Crystal to a corner of the room, Celeste whispered reprimandingly, “Crystal, don’t go overboard! This is all new to you, and you don’t want them to get suspicious!”

Crystal smiled wearily. “I’m sorry, but…It’s so amazing to be doing things that were impossible for me to do before! I felt just like a beautiful ballerina or a spinning top the way I whirled and twirled endlessly!”

Noticing the girl’s dreamy, far-off look, Celeste and Stella glanced at each other. Celeste said in a serious tone, “Crystal…I know using your new magical powers may seem fun at first, but be careful. Even your magical strength has its limits.”

While Celeste had been talking, Florian was giving directions to Coraline about where the last segment of the audition would take place. As Coraline was about to walk past the three women and out of the room, Crystal’s eyes lit up. She shyly exclaimed, “Oh! Nice job, Coraline! Your dancing was so wonderful, I couldn’t take my eyes off you!”

Coraline shot a snobby, sideways glance at Crystal and replied, “Hmph! Well, of course! What did you expect, second-rate skills like yours?”

Hearing the conversation, Florian looked up and stared intently at Crystal and Coraline. Crystal’s shoulders slumped as she watched Coraline walk away. “She’s right…Coraline…she really should get the role of the mermaid princess…she’s so perfect for it. I wonder…why does Florian want me with her around…?”

Stella snorted. “‘Perfect’, huh? I don’t think she’s a perfect fit, and I bet Florian doesn’t think so, either!”

Stella jumped as the water ballet director himself approached them. “...The final segment of the audition is swimming. Meet me in the pool area down the hall once you’ve changed.” Florian seemed pensive as he walked out of the room.

***

When Crystal, Celeste, and Stella reached the indoor pool area, Crystal eyed the glistening water nervously, tightly clutching the Seashimmer Pendant around her neck. “I—I hope this pendant works its magic again…because I can’t swim a single stroke without it!”

Stella enthusiastically put her hands on Crystal’s shoulders, giggling as she surveyed the girl’s appearance. “Don’t worry, it will! And the Merlala Pact didn’t do too bad a job, either, did it? Isn’t your swimsuit the cutest?”

Crystal looked down at her pink, one-piece swimsuit. It was decorated with white ruffles and a little bow at the neckline. “Yes, it is! The Merlala Pact really is magical! It always creates the perfect clothes for me!”

Stella clapped her hands excitedly. “I know, it’s so crazy good, isn’t it? Hey, how come we coaches don’t get any wardrobe changes? Celeste, how ‘bout—”

But Celeste quickly cut her off. “No way, Stella! That Merlala Pact is for Crystal! Don’t go abusing it by changing your outfit for no reason!”

“Aw, man! I never get to have any fun!” Stella mumbled.

Just then, Coraline walked into the room. She wore a sleek, strappy, one-piece swimsuit and her usual sour expression. Florian, who had been waiting for the two water ballerinas to arrive, thought, “Now the time has come for the real test!”

Out loud, he said, “All right, Coraline and Lilliana, this is the final segment of the audition. You will now be tested on balletic swimming as well as fundamental swim strokes.” Turning very serious, his eyes narrowed. “This segment, though last, is the most rigorous of all. Not only is it extremely difficult to dance as well as swim in the water, but…” His eyes flashed. “...you will be required to do so under the physical strain of all your previous exercises!”

Florian turned to Crystal. She still looked a little tired from the grand pirouette she had performed earlier. Florian’s face softened slightly. “Lilliana, as Coraline knows, this audition closely resembles our regular practice routine here at Water Lily Productions. However, if you have worked yourself to exhaustion already, I will forfeit the role of the mermaid princess to Coraline.” To himself, he added, “Though it pains me to do so…”

Celeste and Stella gasped at this proposal. Crystal, though slightly intimidated, thought, “I am pretty tired, but…I’m confident in the magic that has brought me this far!” She wore a resolute look as she said, “...No need for that, Florian! I’m ready for the final test!”

Pleased with her mettle, Florian smiled again. “Very good!”

Annoyed by Crystal’s confident attitude, Coraline snapped, “Well, what are we waiting for? Let’s get started!” Coraline walked toward the pool, thinking back on Crystal’s ballet routine. “To be able to pull off such a grand pirouette without wobbling…she’s more competition than I thought!” Smirking, she added to herself, “...But only a rank beginner would tire herself out like that! There’s no way she’ll be able to perform well now in her condition!”

Once Florian told Coraline what moves to demonstrate, Coraline dove into the pool, then executed the butterfly stroke. To Crystal, Coraline did seem to resemble a lovely butterfly as her arms swung in and out of the water at the same time in a wing-like motion. Then, she did a series of twirls on the surface of the water. It reminded Crystal so clearly of the day she first saw Coraline as the mermaid princess. “Knowing how to execute these moves well is critical…they capture the essence and magic of water ballet…! I have to watch Coraline closely so I can do them just as well—no, even better!”

7.jpg

When it was Crystal’s turn, she made her way to the pool. Celeste and Stella exchanged worried glances. “I hope Crystal will be okay, Celeste,” Stella said. “Coraline is so good!” Celeste bit her nail, watching anxiously.

“Do it just the way she did it, and you’ll be okay,” Crystal told herself. She touched the Seashimmer Pendant one more time, then dove into the clear water.

Florian’s serious, blue-green eyes reflected the pool as he waited for Crystal to emerge from its depths. In a sparkling spray of water droplets, Crystal finally emerged, performing the butterfly stroke. She raised both of her arms forward, then behind her again like a bird in flight. She captured the water ballet director’s attention with her skill and swiftness. “Fantastic! For such an ordinarily slow, difficult swim stroke, she performs it with such speed and grace!”

3 (1).jpg

Crystal executed the series of twirls lightly as though she were a water lily bobbing softly on the surface of the water. She held one hand up high while the other propelled her to move in circular motions. She dove in and out of the water and continued to twirl and swim like a beautiful mermaid dancing lightheartedly in a lagoon. Her eyes glittered with enthusiasm and her bright, genuine smile was infectious. “It reminds me so much of the night of the water ballet…!” Florian reminisced. Crystal was having so much fun, she forgot how tired she was until she was seized with a sudden pain in her leg. She winced, trying to swim, but she began to slowly sink into the water. “M—my leg—!” she shouted.

“Lilliana!” Stella shouted.

“Something’s wrong!” Celeste panicked. Even Coraline was alarmed. All three of the women ran to the pool. But they were beaten by Florian. Seeing Crystal flailing helplessly, he kicked off his sneakers, tore off his jacket, shirt, and sweatpants, and, wearing only swim shorts, dove swiftly into the disturbed waters. As she was about to be completely immersed in the water, he wrapped a firm arm around her and swam to the edge of the pool.
With Celeste, Stella, and Coraline crowding breathlessly around them, Florian dragged Crystal out of the water. Then, he gently laid her on the floor, face up, as he pressed his hands down on her chest several times to remove the water from her lungs.

After choking and spluttering on water, Crystal finally managed to say, “M—my leg! The muscles feel tight!”

“You have a muscle cramp! Don’t worry, everything will be fine!” He gently massaged Crystal’s leg. Then, he directed Coraline to get an ice pack from a first-aid kit nearby. After applying it to Crystal’s leg, the pain steadily eased, and her face grew more relaxed.

“Th…thank you, Florian and Coraline. I—I think I’m beginning to feel better now.” Everyone’s concern melted into relief.

Florian said to Crystal in a soothing voice, “If you can, try to gently stretch your leg. This will help to further relieve the pain.” As she followed his instructions, he explained, “Muscle cramps are dangerous to experience in the middle of swimming. They’re most often caused by overexertion.”

Crystal recalled with regret the grand pirouette she had performed earlier as well as her highly energetic swim routine. She jerked her leg suddenly and winced in pain. Tears formed in her eyes. “Did I ruin my audition by being completely careless?” she thought.

Now that the shock of Crystal’s injury was over, Coraline leaned over with her hands on her hips to look at Florian. She triumphantly said, “Well, I think we all know who passed this audition with flying colors today! Go ahead, say it, Florian! It’s yours truly, isn’t it?”

Seeing Crystal’s tears and sensing her thoughts, Florian softly told her to stop stretching. Then, he silently stood up. Facing the pink-haired woman, he solemnly said, “Coraline… “It’s true that it’s crucial in water ballet to be able to perform to one’s best ability while maintaining stamina. However…” His eyes glinted like blue fire. “...in your nearly flawless performance today, you were lacking one very important thing…the art of inner beauty!”

“—What?!” Coraline said, confused. Celeste and Stella glanced at each other and smiled while Crystal looked on curiously, waiting to hear more.

“The art of water ballet, like all other art forms, showcases the execution of outward beauty through skillful displays of swim, dance and storytelling. But what’s the point of such skills without meaning? Our experiences, our joys, our sufferings, our virtues, even our vices…as artists, we take what is inside us out onto the stage for all to see. And the audience senses who we are through them. So, if we don’t cultivate the beauty of the heart, how will we ever touch the hearts of others on a deeper level through water ballet?”

Florian closed his eyes and spoke earnestly. “As I watched you and Lilliana during your auditions, I was looking for something more than merely a flawless execution of skills. I was searching for something much harder to find—the beauty of the heart. Inner and outer beauty—it is these two traits combined that make for the perfect water ballerina.”

Florian’s face glowed with warm satisfaction as he offered Crystal a hand. She took it and slowly stood up, wondering what would come next. “While Lilliana proved to be a little too overeager in her performance today, there can be no doubt of her high level of skill. Her grand pirouette, her butterfly stroke…each movement so incredibly light and delicate. Yet, in each motion, I saw such sweetness and purity…yes, and, above all, her sweetness shone in her behavior toward you, Coraline, even when you did not reciprocate. These are the reasons why I have ultimately chosen Lilliana to be my water ballerina.”

Celeste and Stella were overjoyed by these last words and rushed to Crystal’s side to hug her in congratulations. Crystal laughed in relief and happiness. “I did it…! I passed the audition!!”

Coraline was speechless for a moment. She remembered how mean she had been to Crystal, but she couldn’t understand why it cost her so much. She fell to the ground and pounded her fists on the floor as frustrated tears welled in her eyes. “It’s not fair! The role of the mermaid princess should’ve been mine! I only lost on a little technicality!”

Crystal couldn’t help but feel a little sorry for her rival. “Coraline seemed to want this role so badly…I feel as though I don’t deserve it…”

Even Florian looked at Coraline with pity. “...But there is always room for improvement…” he thought. He knelt beside her and gently placed a hand on her shoulder. “Coraline…this outcome may not have been what you wanted, but I would welcome such talent as yours in another role for my water ballet.”

The words ‘another role’ meant a more minor one and were like salt in a fresh wound to Coraline. She tore his hand off her shoulder, jerking upright again. “Whatever! I’ll take what I can get! It would be stupid to turn down a job from such a prestigious water ballet company!”

She took her bag and walked sulkily off as Florian looked on, smiling calmly. “Good…I hope you continue to learn from Lilliana, Coraline…” he thought.

As Crystal prepared to leave the Sea Star Aquatic Center, she happily mused, “I can’t believe I actually passed my audition! Still…” She touched the Seashimmer Pendant. “...I know this is just the beginning...I wonder what else lies in store for me as a water ballerina...?”

Try it! Just utter the words, ‘Magical Mermaid Pearl-Essence Transformation’!”

After Crystal repeated the words, the compact opened, and the bottom mirror was magically replaced with sparkling makeup.

I like the theme of the above chapter. :)
