  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The Catholic bishop of Pemba has warned that jihadist insurgents in northern Mozambique are openly declaring their intention to establish a caliphate modeled on the Islamic State, as a nearly decade-long insurgency continues to kill and displace civilians across Cabo Delgado province.

Bishop António Juliasse said in a message to Aid to the Church in Need, a pontifical Catholic foundation, that militants are stating their objective directly to those they encounter.

“The signs are all there. They speak openly of a caliphate. When they find people, when they kidnap victims. That is what they say – that they are working for a caliphate,” he said.

The insurgency in Cabo Delgado began in 2017. More than 300 Catholics have been killed, many by decapitation, and at least 117 church buildings have been razed or destroyed, according to ACN. Among the structures lost is the St. Louis of Montfort mission church, a large historic structure burned to the ground at the end of April.
