  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I suppose the world has always been rather toxic in one way or another. Even among so called "believers' there has been unhealthy rancor. We can either isolate or find community among those who most share our beliefs. But we need to be careful because beliefs can also become toxic. Certain interpretations of the Bible can be toxic. But can love be toxic? That is the main call and commandment of Jesus. "Love one another as I have loved you."

I think personal boundaries are important. That is, just because I walk into an angry space of someone else, does not mean that I have to bring it into myself. And yet it is almost automatic that we do so. Even here on the forum it can be quite easy to get sucked into a knee jerk response that disquiets us.

Matthew 16:24 “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me."
