  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Thanks, useful indeed .. one minor correction IMHO: Rev 1:8 refers to God the Father so item 1) can't be used

Yet two related verses, Revelation 1:11 and Revelation 1:17, are indeed Jesus Christ speaking:

(Rev 1:11) saying, "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last," and, "What you see, write in a book and send it to the seven churches which are in Asia: to Ephesus, to Smyrna, to Pergamos, to Thyatira, to Sardis, to Philadelphia, and to Laodicea."

(Rev 1:17) And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as dead. But He laid His right hand on me, saying to me, "Do not be afraid; I am the First and the Last.

I would say that Revelation 1:8 at least includes Jesus Christ, Who is fully God as well as fully Man.

In The Context of Revelation Chapter 1:8, Jesus is The Speaker Because He Says He The Alpha and Omega In Revelation 1:8 But Then Repeats Saying He Is The Alpha and Omega In Revelation 1:11.

"I Am The Alpha and Omega, The Beginning and The End", says The Lord, "who is and who was and who is to come, The Almighty" [Revelation 1:8]

"Saying, I Am The Alpha and The Omega, The First and The Last," and, "What you see, write in a book and send it to the seven churches which are in Asia: To Ephesus, To Smyrna, To Pergamos, To Thyatira, To Sardis, To Philadelphia, and To Laodicea" [Revelation 1:11]

In Context of Revelation Chapter 1, Jesus is the speaker from verse 8 to verse 20

But Even If People Believe Revelation 1:8 Is God The Father Speaking, Jesus Christ Claims The Titles of God The Father In Revelation 22:13

In Revelation Chapter 1:8, The Speaker Rather you believe its The Father or Jesus claims The Titles of Alpha/Omega/Beginning/End/Almighty

Jesus would then be The Almighty because he says in Revelation 22:13, what the speaker in Revelation 1:8 claims

"I Am The Alpha and The Omega, The Beginning and The End, The First and The Last" [Revelation 22:13]

This would make Jesus The Almighty in Revelation 22:13, based off the titles the speaker of Revelation 1:8 states of Alpha and Omega/Beginning and End/First and Last/The Almighty

You may have noticed the beginning of Rev 1:11 you're quoting (I Am The Alpha and The Omega, The First and The Last) is missing among the main oldest manuscripts; for that reason modern Bible translations (using the latest textual criticism findings) don't have this phrase (e.g. among others ESV, LSB).

Revelation 1:4 contains an enumeration with three distinct 'froms':
  • the One who is and who was and who is to come
  • the seven Spirits who are before His throne
  • Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth
Based on this observation alone we can conclude the first from cannot be the third from, and thus it is evident the first from is God the Father. Revelation 1:6 ( .. 'priests to His God and Father' .. ) presents God the Father as the God of Jesus (think about the implications of that).

Revelation 1:7 is a quote from Zechariah 12:10 .. but the narrator is still John as his proclamation ends with 'Yes, Amen' in verse 7

Then in Revelation 1:8 the narration comes from God the Father as the identical phrase 'the One who is and who was and who is to come' from verse 1 can be inferred to refer to only God the Father. The phrases 'Lord God' (Greek: 'kyrios ho theos') and 'Almighty' (Greek: 'pantokrator') have special significance:

In the book of Revelation the Greek word 'pantokrator' (almighty) occurs 9 (!) times and in all these occurrences it refers to God the Father only (Revelation 4:8, Revelation 11:17, Revelation 15:3, Revelation 16:7, Revelation 16:14, Revelation 19:6, Revelation 19:15, Revelation 21:22).

In all of the rest of the NT the Greek word 'pantokrator' (almighty) occurs only once in 2 Corinthians 6:18 and also refers to God the Father:
'And I will be a father to you,
And you shall be sons and daughters to Me,'
says the Lord Almighty (Greek: 'kyrios pantokrator')
The verse seems to be a compilation of OT/TNK verses and themes.

Nowhere in the entire NT is the Greek word 'pantokrator' applied to Jesus.

In the Greek translation of the OT/TNK (the 'LXX') that was in use at the time of writing of the book of Revelation the word 'pantokrator' is used exclusively for YHWH / the God of Israel (it occurs many times).

In Revelation the phrase 'Alpha and Omega / First and Last' indeed is used for both - Jesus is the One sent by God the Father; he came from/out-of the Father. He acts with His authority - so yes, titles and even His name can be given to Him:
  • God the Father - Revelation 1:8, Revelation 21:6 (in that section Jesus is 'the Lamb')
  • Jesus - Revelation 1:17-18 (' .. and I was dead .. '), Revelation 22:13
Given the points the above it seems straightforward Revelation 1:8 refers to God the Father; presenting this verse to a Muslim as a first 'evidence' Jesus is God Almighty will probably result in a lost battle before actual discourse starts as a careful Islamic reader of Revelation would likely quickly point out these observations.

The view that Revelation 1:8 refers to God the Father is the mainstream Christian theological by the way.

Mission to Muslims is very important - I love it - we should be careful in what arguments to deploy.

Be blessed .. !

Regardless of The Interpretation of who The Speaker Is In Revelation 1:8, The Father Is The Almighty & Jesus Christ Is The Almighty Because of The Titles of Alpha & Omega/Beginning & End/First & Last Used Throughout The Book of Revelation

In The Context of Revelation Chapter 1, The Only Individual Who Is Seen Is by The Apostle John Is Jesus Christ

God The Father Is Spoken of In The Prolong of Revelation Chapter 1:1-7, But Is Not Seen By The Apostle John Until Revelation Chapter 4

I'm not too sure about the manuscripts but I believe some churches do take away verses in The Bible To Attack The Deity of Jesus Christ. However based off of The Context of The Speaker In Revelation 1:8 Claiming The Titles of Alpha and Omega, Beginning and End, I would believe that The Revelation 1:11 Verse most likely used The Same Titles of Alpha and Omega, First & Last because of The Context of The Previous Verses.

Examining The Prolong of Revelation 1:1-7

"John, To The Seven Churches which are in Asia: Grace To You and Peace From Him Who Is and Who Was and Who Is To Come, And From The Seven Spirits Who Are Before His Throne" [Revelation 1:4]

In The Context of Revelation Chapter 1, John Is Writing To The Seven Churches, But Jesus Is The One Who Tells Him To Write

"Saying, "I Am The Alpha and The Omega, The First and The Last", and, "What you see, write in a book and send it to The Seven Churches Which are in Asia: To Ephesus, To Smyrna, To Pergamos, To Thyatira, To Sardis, To Philadelphia, and To Laodicea" [Revelation 1:11]

"Write The Things which you have seen, and the things which are, and the things which will take place after this" [Revelation 1:19]

"Grace To You and Peace From Him Who Is and Who Was and Who Is To Come" [Revelation 1:4]

"I Am The Alpha and The Omega, The Beginning and The End", says The Lord, "Who Is and Who Was and Who Is The Come, The Almighty" [Revelation 1:8]

What Does Who Is and Who Was and Who Is To Come Mean?

In The Context of Revelation Chapter 1, Jesus Explains What The Terms Who Is and Who Was and Who Is To Come Mean

I Am He Who Lives (Who Is), and was dead (Who Was), and Behold, I Am Alive Forevermore. Amen (Who Is To Come) [Revelation 1:18]

"And From The Seven Spirits Who Are Before His Throne" [Revelation 1:4] [The Seven Spirits Are Before Jesus Throne]

"And To The Angel of The Church in Sardis Write, "These things says He Who has The Seven Spirits of God" [Revelation 3:1]
