  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

It's a critical covenant for those in the military. Airmen flew into combat based on that covenant. The Air Force has an entire Special Forces specialty devoted to that one thing: Rescuing downed pilots. A bureaucratic decision that "it's a waste of resources" to make every effort to rescure a pilot known to be alive and actively evading the enemy could actually crash the Air Force.

"Usually, it's not done"....according to you know who.

I heard that.

No documented case exists where the U.S. military definitively knew a pilot was actively evading and simply chose to abandon him.

There were two cases during the Vietnam war that the downed pilots themselves waived off rescuers because the ground situation was too "hot."

Lol you sound almost proud of this embarrassment. Our big military budget is also why Israel can guarantee universal healthcare to all its citizens while Americans go without.
Including abortion, apparently.

I can see someone playing devil’s advocate to explore the ramifications of making the decision “another way” and President Trump doing the right thing.
I would be more worried if there weren’t.

That's fair. However, if that was Trump's point, he communicated it very poorly.

FBI arrests suspected leaker of downed fighter jet over Iran

FBI Director Kash Patel described the suspected leaker as a former SOCOM employee, “who supported our top-level military warfighters, for allegedly transmitting classified information to a member of the media.”

During a Monday press conference at the White House, President Donald Trump told reporters that the government was “looking very hard to find that leaker,” describing the leaker as a “sick person.” [who put] the pilot and military rescuers at risk.

During the press conference, the president said his administration would go to the unnamed media company that broke the story, pressuring them to disclose the source of the leak, threatening jail time and citing national security.

For over two days, the administration and the Pentagon refused to confirm the crash and the subsequent report of the missing pilot, despite multiple media reports.

We'll see if today's media can stand as tough as the media was in the 60s and 70s.

Well, they never claimed they would be transparent.

It’s understandable that the ID’s of the rescued pilots are not released. But something seems odd. A middle aged injured pilot runs 5 miles and climbs 7,000 rugged feet and is found by a new gadget that can pick up a heartbeat from a great distance?

The "Ghost Murmur" thing is plausible science fiction--like The Expanse.

It was probably more like: The aviator's CSEL beacon provided the rough position. Imaging surveillance systems (visual and IR) narrowed the search area (drones, satellites). Analysis of the terrain effect on movement isolated likely hiding spots. Given the remoteness of the location and the lack of any "false positive" emitters in the area, an IR search was probably very useful.

Maybe they used so-called "ghost murmur" techniques when rescuers got to within a few yards.

I think you're also ageist. The aviator was still required to meet rigorous physical fitness standards. The aviators I knew also spent extra time in the gym working to gain strength for high-gee maneuvers.

The “ghost murmur” techniques make more sense the way you describe it. Why put out a James Bond style tale about a gadget when the truth is quite impressive. I’m still skeptical that he endured the violent ejection, hustled 5 miles then climbed 7,000 feet of severe terrain, regardless of age. Especially since we haven’t heard a peep from him. I’m betting you can agree some of the best modern fiction writing has come from military and intelligence sources.

Remember the military description of heroic soldier Jessica Lynch fighting off a horde of bad guys before her capture …. Only to find out she had been seriously injured in a vehicle crash during an attack , then taken to a hospital and treated in Iraq?

Irrelevant. Need I remind you that the topic is about the F-15 pilot rescue. Not a contest for who is more pro-cancer.
You considered it relevant when you we are able to put the Democrats in a bad light. Now that the Trump policies come out as much worse - because they have real life consequences - it is all the sudden irrelevant.

Noted:You believw that loosing 150m in military assets to rescue a single human being is a waste. Tell me you are not pro-life without saying you are not pro-life.
I think putting this man life in danger was wrong, in the first place. Saving the man wasn't wrong. Since Trump put his life in danger. Trump should pay for the rescue and money , that American lost over his bad trade deals. And his mess, that he put America in. No my tax dollars shouldn't go on Trump's so called rescue.

Man, what ribbon do you get for that?

Pilot of fighter jet downed over Iran was previously shot down in Kuwaiti friendly fire incident, sources say

The pilot of the F-15E fighter jet downed over Iran was also flying one of the jets shot down at the start of the war by Kuwaiti friendly fire, two people familiar with the incidents tell CBS News.

Just over 30 days after safely ejecting during the friendly fire incident, the pilot was on a mission over Iran when the jet was hit by a surface-to-air missile, prompting a daring rescue operation.

He probably won't fly again.

Not only because of his bad luck, but because ejection is a body-beating.

Oh man, can you imagine how much flak that guy is catching from his buddies? (probably more than he caught from the missiles) There are so many jokes to be made about getting tagged twice... any one of which would get me banned.^_^
