  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I did not ask how it is given, I am asking what it is in itself, and why you can't understand the scripture I posted?

thks
I answered what grace is in itself: it is unmerited favour.

Times of refreshing would be things like spiritual refreshment, joy and peace, given to the penitent sinner in God's grace.

Unmerited favour is the simplest definition of the Greek word translated as "grace".
so it not in scripture!

can we do anything to earn grace?

or prepare to receive grace?

can we do anything to earn grace?
Nobody earns it. God gave it freely to all humanity when He established the Kindom. It was there to be chosen by each, a matter of allegiance to adversity or to the Kingdom.

you right we cannot earn grace, but can earn an increase of grace
2 pet 3:18

God does give grace to everyone, its available to everyone but we must be properly disposed to receive grace!

James 4:6
But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.

Of course it's in Scripture. It's the most basic dictionary definition of the Scriptural Greek word, usually rendered as "grace", in English Bibles.

One cannot earn unmerited favour.

If one has not yet received grace from God, then he is hostile towards God, hates the light and will not come to it; and he does not receive the things of the Spirit of God; so, no, he cannot prepare to receive God's grace.

Acts 3:19
Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord.

what does this verse mean by "the refreshing"?

how does the presence of the Lord cause refreshing?

what does this verse mean by the "times of refreshing"?

thks
This is what this verse reminds me of.

12 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 13 “Speak also to the children of Israel, saying: ‘Surely My Sabbaths you shall keep, for it is a sign between Me and you throughout your generations, that you may know that I am the Lord who sanctifies[b] you. 14 You shall keep the Sabbath, therefore, for it is holy to you. Everyone who [c]profanes it shall surely be put to death; for whoever does any work on it, that person shall be cut off from among his people. 15 Work shall be done for six days, but the seventh is the Sabbath of rest, holy to the Lord. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death. 16 Therefore the children of Israel shall keep the Sabbath, to observe the Sabbath throughout their generations as a perpetual covenant. 1 Exo 31:17 It is a sign between Me and the children of Israel forever; for in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day He rested and was refreshed.’

We are made in the image of God to follow Him. Does God need refreshing or was this an example for mankind.

The Sabbath shows our dependence on our Creator that we are resting in His creative and redemptive work. The Sabbath points to our Creator Exo20:11 a sign of Creation resting on the Sabbath day after finished work Exo 31:17 and and a sign of His re-creation in us or sanctification- being refreshed in Christ.

Eze 20:12 Moreover I also gave them My Sabbaths, to be a sign between them and Me, that they might know that I am the Lord who sanctifies them.

The Sabbath is where God personally invites everyone to join ourselves to the LORD, to serve Him

Isa 56:6 “Also the sons of the foreigner
Who join themselves to the Lord, to serve Him,
And to love the name of the Lord, to be His servants—
Everyone who keeps from defiling the Sabbath,
And holds fast My covenant—

The Sabbath is special sanctified time with our Creator. I know when I dedicate the Sabbath as holy time on God's holy day Exo20:10 honoring the LORD Isa58:13 its a refreshing that cannot be replaced by anything else in this world. It allows me to get through the rest of the week, why God gave it as a blessing to mankind Mark2:27-28 Isa56:2 but sadly the majority does not accept this free gift for some reason and has traded it in for their own sanctification Isa66:17

So basically we should repent from our sins and depend on Christ for our salvation.

every translation is by humans and humans all have opinions.

I first go to Strong's and look up the words

anapsuxis: Refreshing, relief, rest
Original Word: ἀνάψυξις
Part of Speech: Noun, Feminine
Transliteration: anapsuxis
Pronunciation: an-APS-ook-sis
Phonetic Spelling: (an-aps'-ook-sis)
KJV: revival
NASB: refreshing
Word Origin: [from G404 (ἀναψύχω - refreshed)]

1. (properly) a recovery of breath
2. (figuratively) revival

converted
epistrephó: To turn, to return, to turn back, to convert
Original Word: ἐπιστρέφω
Part of Speech: Verb
Transliteration: epistrephó
Pronunciation: eh-pee-STREF-oh
Phonetic Spelling: (ep-ee-stref'-o)
KJV: come (go) again, convert, (re-)turn (about, again)
NASB: turn, return, turned, returned, back, returns, turning
Word Origin: [from G1909 (ἐπί - over) and G4762 (στρέφω - turned)]

19 Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;

Then I look at other translations -- Here is "God's word translation"
GWT 19 So change the way you think and act, and turn [to God] to have your sins removed.
20 Then times will come when the Lord will refresh (and or rest) you. He will send you Jesus, whom he has appointed to be the Christ.

my understanding would be as follows

" change how you are living, repent of your sins, turn to God's Way, and then Christ will pay for your sins and the Father will give you rest

Not grow in grace, but in the grace
But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.

The "good" thief had been born again, whilst on the cross, otherwise he would not have believed in the Lord.

Rom. 8:7-9 (A.V.)
7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.
9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

I have heard since I can remember, Jesus took the thief to heaven the very day they both died. Can that be true?

Luke 23

39 And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying,

Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation?

42 And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom.

43 And Jesus said unto him,

Verily I say unto thee to day shalt thou be with me in paradise.

Here is a criminal dying a horrendous death for his crimes and all he does is say, “remember me.” And everyone tells us this fellow went to straight heaven that very day, with Christ. Wasn’t Christ suppose to be in the grave for 3 days and 3 nights?

Is this reasonable? Utter two words and you are saved?

Is this according to scriptures? No repentance, no baptism, no overcoming, no trials?

Can the gift of eternal life come in seconds?

Then we have 10 “Virgins”; we must assume they have repented, been baptized, given the promise of the Holy Spirit therefore; spiritual virgins, "Christians in God’s Church".

How can we determine all ten are Christians? The Five wise “Virgins” go in to the wedding with Christ.

Matthew 25

1 Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom.

2 And five of them were wise, and five [were] foolish.

3 They that [were] foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them:

4 But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.

5 While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept.

6 And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him.

8 And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out.

9 But the wise answered, saying, [Not so]; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves.

10 And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut.

11 Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us.

12 But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not.

Five Christians that are foolish, but doing whatever you think a Christian must do to be called a “virgin”, their lamps are going dry, which can be related to the Holy Spirit and or to faith or “grace”, whatever?

The five foolish leave and then return --- Christ says Verily I say unto you, I know you not. --- and the door was shut.
Here is another account

Matthew 7

21 Not everyone that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
when did the Thief do the Father's will?
22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?

23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

Here are more “Christians” doing wonderful works, preaching, teaching, feeding the poor, declaring Christ is their lord and Christ says depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

How are we to understand these three events, logically, spiritually, scripturally?

The last two are two separate issues involving “Christians”; thinking, believing they are following Jesus Christ.

The 5 virgins lost interest or became distracted or just let the world put them to sleep,

the others, claiming Christ as their Lord, doing wonderful works, were not following the ONE Lawful narrow Way, otherwise Christ could not accuse them of iniquity? lawlessness

Jesus Christ had Matthew include the two situations where many Christians were rejected and then this thief met Christ for the first time, for a few minutes and He is granted the gift of eternal life for speaking two words?

How can these events be justified, one gets “saved” in minutes and the others, after possibly years, are rejected?
can this affect you and your salvation? Where do you stand?

The other 'small' impediment, Christ did not rise to the Father in heaven until 4 days later in the morning, to appear before the Father and have Christ’s sacrifice accept as payment for the sins of all mankind.
