Day 5: Why Did Blood and Water Pour From Jesus?

When the side of Jesus was pierced on Calvary, blood and water flowed forth.

Why does St. John record this moment so carefully?

According to the Church Fathers and traditional Catholic theology, the blood and water are not merely details of the Passion. They signify the sacraments flowing from Christ's sacrifice, especially Holy Baptism and the Holy Eucharist.

Just as Eve came forth from the side of Adam, Holy Mother Church came forth from the side of Christ, the New Adam.

This mystery stands at the heart of Redemption and helps us understand why devotion to the Sacred Heart is so closely connected to the Cross, the sacraments, and the salvation of souls.
