Ben Sasse’s Daughter Writes Moving Tribute to Her Terminally Ill Dad

The day Alex Sasse graduated from college last December, her family learned that dad Ben Sasse had metastatic Stage 4 pancreatic cancer. Since then, the middle child of Ben and Melissa Sasse has reflected on her upbringing.

In a May 26 tribute, Alex Sasse applauded her parents’ “core tenets” to raising kids in the digital age, writing, “It is a philosophy for which I will forever be grateful.” Sasse, 22, said she’s watched her father navigate a terminal diagnosis “with grit, humor, resilience” while using “the best weapon for any battle: a rooted worldview grounded in theology.”

Ben Sasse, 54, is a former U.S. Senator (R-Neb.), a former university president and professor, and a pro-life advocate. Since his diagnosis, the outspoken Christian has launched the “Not Dead Yet” podcast and given powerful interviews about faith, family, and America. Thanks to experimental treatment, Sasse has outlived his initial life-expectancy prognosis of three to four months.

In her essay “How My Father, Ben Sasse, Raised Me,” Alex Sasse said her parents urged their three kids to “get out of your messy head and take an aerial view of your life.” Much of that occurred during mealtime conversations, said the recent college grad, who’s writing a book and plans to attend medical school.
