  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I am currently involved in a nursing home ministry. I enjoy it very much and doing a lot of bible reading to residents.
One of the biggest challenges to the nursing home ministry is communicating with those who have dementia and alzheimers disease. Sometimes I wonder how much of the bible reading they can understand. There are those residents who enjoy hearing the bible reading. To them the word of God is a lifeline of hope. My greatest desire is to encourage others through the sharing of scripture.

Yes but do not forget to put the human touch into your ministry. Be creative. I have ministered to nursing homes, etc. We are there for them. Not ourselves and whatever goal we think we need to meet. God works through us on the level of those we minister too.

The word does not return void. Your reading can change the spiritual atmosphere. I think you could read any language bible in a place and even if no one could understand it, it would have a positive affect. Thanks for showing such care to do ministry there.

I worked as a registered nurse in several nursing homes over the years. Apart from the dementia challenge, there is also the boredom of many residents. So, I think any ministry in nursing homes is a great idea.
Be Blessed.

There are some good resources available on meaningful ministry with people with dementia. I probably can't like to them without that breaching CF's rules on advertising, but if you google something like "spiritual care dementia" you should bring up a bunch of helpful options.

That is a good idea. Thank you for sharing this Paidske. I will check it out. I came back to your post to add more to my response. I did the search like you recommended. I was just reminded that the musical and emotional part of the brain remains functional even after the logical part of the brain becomes somewhat inactive. That means music and scripture reading can be encouraging to a dementia patient.

You are right about the boredom Jeff. I have often thought about that after seeing people sit in wheelchairs for hours.

If you ever want to delve deeper, I’m here. I have lots of experience in this field. :praying:
Thank you Michie. I am watching YouTube videos on spiritual care for dementia patients. This is a good topic that we can cover.
