  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

How should we interpret the Genesis week?

Sounds pretty weak. If distinguishing light and darkness is a scientific concept, single-celled organisms are doing science.
Yea. I see the sunrise when I wake up in the morning. But I can't say that I ever think of quantum mechanics when I see this despite light and darkness being in separated.

The bible says all know of Gods invisible creative power in the things that He had made. If so then it makes sense that as we come to understand nature in more detail it should reveal Gods creative power in even more detail.

That is what seemes to be happening. The more we see see the universe in great detail the more it looks created. The more we see back to the beginning of life the more it seems created.

Dawkins said that nature has the appearence of design but is not designed. Rather the force of natural selection makes it appear that way. Random changes are weeded out and beneficial ones remain and are passed on for survival.

But as we look deeper this idea is falling apart and lacks explanatory power. The same with cosmology.

The more we know the more the most reasonable inference is that the universe and life is designed and did not come about randomly or by chance. If it sounds, walks and looks like a duck. Then chances are its a duck.

It's good evidence of the existence of God:

Exodus 20: 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

Why we have a seven day week, even today, an everlasting memorial of God's creation. If the length of the week had been changed, as has been tried through History, for example during the French Revolution to a ten day week, then we couldn't claim this, but the seven day week stands.

God Bless You :)

Created, yes, designed, no. God is no mere designer. It has become increasingly obvious that evolutionary processes are more efficient than design for very complex problems. Engineers are now borrowing from creation to more efficiently solve many such problems. And it's not at all a matter of chance.

It's like a market economy. No one designs market economies. Yet they work better than planned economies. That's just the world we live in.
God had it right from the start.

That's a testable belief. Which of the four points of Darwinian theory have been shown to be false? I think you've confused evolutionary theory with universal common descent. What do you think evolutionary theory says?

The most obvious one is the premise change favors advantageous variations. If life begin as single cell, reproduction was by division. A far superior characteristic for survival than human reproduction. Same goes for "eating." Photosynthesis is the best way to survive, anything else is worse. If life began "simple," every future change gave us a life form less suited to survive.

I really believe there’s never been a better time to feel justified in crediting God with creating the universe.

With the only two rational choices for answering the primary question of metaphysics, “Why do we have something rather than nothing at all?” being an eternal universe or aneternal creator, and having so much evidence available today pointing towards a non-eternal universe, the idea of a creator God is looking pretty good.

Physicist Dr. Alexander Vilenkin puts what I think is the nail in the coffin of an eternal universe when he says:

Critics of the God hypothesis used to normally punt towards the multi-verse theory to explain away our universe’s beginning, but today many now admit that no empirical evidence supports such a thing (they need faith to believe it) and so are coming around to Dr. Richard Swinburne’s position on the matter: “To postulate a trillion-trillion other universes, rather than one God, in order to explain the orderliness of our universe, seems the height of irrationality.”

Continued below.
Ok so there are two issues here.

1. One in the Title of the thread "whether to accept the Genesis week" for the creation of our Earth, our solar system.
2. The second one in the OP of whether to accept "Stasis" , eternal matter, eternal universe

The alternative of course being evolutionism for the first quesition about the Genesis week being 7 actual days.
And the alternative to "in the beginning God created" (A big bang cosmology having a start scenario) being the steady state of stasis, eternal matter, eternal univ

Obviously the Bible speaks of a literal 7 day creation week in the legal code of the Commandments of God in Ex 20:8-11 with a reference directly back to the literal 7 day week ending in Gen 2:1-3

Gen 1:
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. (God is the creator of the entire universe)

===GAP===

== skip to ... Earth exists covered by water ===
2 The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
3 Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. 4 And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day.

Gen 2:
2 By the seventh day God completed His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. 3 Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.

NOT "A Seventh day" but "THE Seventh day". Blessed and Sanctified by God

=== LEGAL CODE

Ex 20:8-11
8 “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God; in it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter, your male or your female servant or your cattle or your sojourner who stays with you. 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

Not 'A seventh day" but "The seventh day", "the Sabbath'
And of course in Gen 2 there is only one Sabbath, the weekly seventh day. Blessed and sanctified. So also in Ex 20.

=================

Question: Why not accept the Bible as it reads ?

BTW the Sun is made on day four as an "in your face" gesture by God against atheist forms of cosmology

Created, yes, designed, no. God is no mere designer.
The idea that a Master artist creates something that makes it appear the artist has no intelligence at all, Iin the case where that Creator is God) goes far beyond denying Romans 1, Genesis 1 and a great deal of the Bible
It has become increasingly obvious that evolutionary processes are more efficient than design for very complex problems.
but not in real life?
Engineers are now borrowing from creation to more efficiently solve many such problems.
because they failed to have the intelligence to simply solve every aspect of the problem on their own without first borrowing from God.
God had it right from the start.
True.

Genesis 1-2.4a is never presented as what “God told humans”,
2 Tim 3:16 'all scripture is given by inspiration from God"
2 Pet 1:20 But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture becomes a matter of someone’s own interpretation, 21 for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.

This point is fundamental to all of Christianity

By contrast, for atheist the Bible is just a collection of fiction/fables/myth/story telling

Real as it comes. Optimizing diesel engines, for example.
because they failed to have the intelligence to simply solve every aspect of the problem on their own without first borrowing from God.
Yep. God used evolutionary processes to create the variety of living things we see. Engineers are just borrowing the most efficient method from God. Turns out, He knows best, after all.

Nope. Changes are random. Survival favors advantageous variations. You'd probably be more effective against science if you knew what it is about.

Same goes for "eating." Photosynthesis is the best way to survive, anything else is worse. If life began "simple," every future change gave us a life form less suited to survive.

And yet there are more kinds of organisms not using photosynthesis than there are that use it. I don't think you've thought this out very well.

As a child, I really had no other choice then to accept a literally true bible.
As I matured it became increasingly difficult twisting my brain in knots to make sense.
I do believe our Good Lord wants His kids to make sense out of His Word.
I now prefer to try and make sense of His Word by thinking of all material references, as allegorical to the immaterial.
It works much better for me.

But that's me. I also believe we can find His Truth in as various methods, as there are believers.

Yes, the 1st day is the birth of Jesus, let there be Light. The 6th day is Good Friday. Then the 7th day is Righteousness. Eden.

This doesn't mean that the narrative isn't employing theological, literary, or symbolic ideas. For example, oftentimes throughout the old testament, God's rest, such as described on the 7th day, is a matter of His enthronement and rule. Examples include Isaiah 66:1-2, Psalm 47 and 132, Ezekiel 43 etc.

So when we read Genesis, we should understand that the text contains and communicates many different kinds of truths, rather than it simply being plainly literal materialism.

This can be said about many verses of Scripture. That is the beauty.
