  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

[Psalm 12:6 KJV] "The words of the LORD [are] pure words: [as] silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times."
[Psalm 12:7 KJV] "Thou shalt keep them, O LORD, thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever."

[Psalm 12:6 NIV] "And the words of the LORD are flawless, like silver purified in a crucible, like gold refined seven times."
[Psalm 12:7 NIV] "You, LORD, will keep the needy safe and will protect us forever from the wicked,"

The new Bibles change this verse to remove that God will preserve his Word. They made his Words about us.

The NIV is a ghastly translation of the scriptures. I cannot abide the 'dynamic equivalence' form of translation. Also, as it is based on the Critical Text is another reason for me to pass it by. But hey. That's just me.

Please don't lump all the newer translation of the bible together. They don't all "change this verse to remove that God will preserve his Word." For example, the two verses in the NKJV are:

(Psa 12:6 NKJV) The words of the LORD are pure words, Like silver tried in a furnace of earth, Purified seven times.
(Psa 12:7 NKJV) You shall keep them, O LORD, You shall preserve them from this generation forever.

The WEB has:

(Psa 12:6 WEB) Yahweh’s words are flawless words, as silver refined in a clay furnace, purified seven times.
(Psa 12:7 WEB) You will keep them, Yahweh. You will preserve them from this generation forever.

It would be more accurate to say that some new bibles change the verse and remove that God will preserve His word.

Please decide what God is saying to Moses:

"And the LORD said to Moses, "How long do you refuse to keep My commandments and My laws?" (Exodus 16:28, NKJV)

It looks like God is saying, "Moses, you are continuing to refuse to keep My commandments and My laws." But look carefully at the accurate King James:

"And the LORD said unto Moses, How long refuse ye to keep my commandments and my laws?"

Now we understand! It was the people, not Moses, that God was upset with. "Ye" and "you" mean more than one person. "Thee," "thou," "thy," "thine," "doeth," "hast," etc., only mean one person. How do we know? The "y" is plural. The "t" is singular. Isn't that easy? Now you know what Jesus meant when He said to Nicodemus, "Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again" (John 3:7).

Yes very good point

The English we use today does not have a singular and a plural form; we use "you" for both. How do we manage to understand each other? By context. It's the same with Exodus 16:28. Looking at the previous verses, we find that some of the Children of Israel had blatantly refused to obey God's commandment not to gather manna on the seventh day. Next comes the verse you quoted, 28. Then in verse 29 we read words which make it abundantly clear that the "you" of verse 28 is plural:

(Exo 16:29) See! The LORD has given you the Sabbath; therefore on the sixth day he gives you bread for two days. Remain each of you in his place; let no one go out of his place on the seventh day.”

The NKJV translators were translating into the English of their day, as the 1611 translators were in their time.

I’m not seeing a difference. Both of them say the exact same thing.

Exodus 16:28 (NASB95) Then the LORD said to Moses, “How long do you refuse to keep My commandments and My instructions?

“And the Lord said to Moses, “How long will you refuse to keep my commandments and my laws?”
‭‭Exodus‬ ‭16‬:‭28‬ ‭ESV‬‬

They are all saying the same exact thing. There is nothing to suggest in any of them that God is speaking to anyone besides Moses until you move on to the next verse.

ETA: on looking up the definition of “ye” I agree that it can make the language clearer, but none of us speak “the king’s English”, and even those of us that have used the KJV for most of our lives, who haven’t done a deep dive into the difference between ye and you, have no idea that ye is plural.

Can you give an example of how the meaning was changed in those passages you listed, since that was your claim? Thanks.

You do realize that many of the newer Bibles include all this information in them, either by way of footnotes or actual bracketing within the text of the passages, right?

And in many online Bibles you can call up a verse by verse comparison between all the versions so you can see how each verse is translated in each version.

Both of these tools exist to educate people on how the manuscripts differ from each other and how they changed over time (whether to include lost things or to remove inerrant additions.)

You seem to miss the whole point.

King James did the same thing, put foot notes in the center or at the bottom of the page, even used to have an index explaining quite a lot, that is nothing new. I remember when the Bible were full of pictures, along with those footnotes.

So I ask you which version is correct or as close to correct as can be translated? Which will you choose or have chosen, many are moving away from the King James? Some changes make a difference.

There is no absolute answer, all of it was translated by men and their assumptions of what the author and or words meant, nor are there any of the original manuscripts available to go by.

I wonder is the Catholic Church hiding them? Something that should be sacred and lost, hard to believe. After all those bishops and priests set standards and translations and to separate themselves from Judaism.

I stick with the King James Version even though small portion of it has changed since the 1960s.

If you cannot assess what changes and the differences and meaning from what I posted which you replied to, there's nothing further I can say to help you.

The KJV couldn’t have done it, at least to the extent today’s newer versions did it because many manuscripts have been discovered since the KJV was first published.

I use the NASB and the ESV for personal use, but when I want to delve deeper into a specific passage, I use the apps that list all the translations side-by-side.
