  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

For the same reason that a large number of attendees bring their Bible to service and then leave it in their car for the next service. Some have not graduated to solid food yet.

And, btw, a good number people that attend church do discuss the Bible and doctrine. You should not use absolutes.

My condolences. Your marriage would have been much more fulfilling if he would have taken the time to talk to you about God and the Bible. Me and my wife enjoy our Bible studies immensely.

My late husband went to 4 years of college and 1 year of seminary. He never talked to me about God or the Bible.
How very odd. Maybe he secretly became an unbeliever?

I don't know.
Here are some of my favorite scriptures tho.

"Study to be quiet."

"Therefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath."

"Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless."

"When there are many words, sin is unavoidable, but the one who controls his lips is prudent."

"Now as to the love of the brothers and sisters, you have no need for anyone to write to you, for you yourselves are taught by God to love one another; 10 for indeed you practice it toward all the brothers and sisters who are in all Macedonia. But we urge you, brothers and sisters, to excel even more, 11 and to make it your ambition to lead a quiet life and attend to your own business and work with your hands, just as we instructed you, 12 so that you will behave properly toward outsiders and not be in any need.'

There is nothing wrong with quiet.
Not all men are evangalists. God gives different gifts.
Still, a person should be ready to give an answer if asked.
I don't know what your relationship was like. I do know it is lonely when you don't feel you can communicate peacefully and openly with the person you are with and love.

God bless you and grant you peace.

Autistic people are quiet. Silent people don't become pastors. People attend seminaries to become pastors. He didn't read the Bible but he loved to read other books.

What an incredibly astute comment!

Yes, a believer might well expect the opposite from someone who has attended seminary, but that's only worldly conditioning.

I can't tell you how many ppl I've known who have come out of seminary or similar, only to discover they have been "neutered for Christ." A spirit of religion is very busy programming the students. I have seen my share of whited sepulchres.
If a person has Christ, he is kept by Christ. Is there a verse that says Christ unsaves someone He saves?

There is rather, a verse that says the exact opposite:

(Joh 6:37 NKJV) All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out.

Why do people attend church yet never discuss the Bible or doctrine?
Perhaps, not quite interested. Consider, for instance, if they are told to believe in some creeds, that the church developed, which they are to believe, though those cannot be understood, would they be interested to discuss something that has to be believed and yet not understood? Or if they are told that what matter is only faith without charity, and charity and love, the merit for which goes to the Lord, is not of any importance for salvation. Would they be interested to discuss such a doctrine?

Maybe because they know that if they open their mouths to say something that doesn't exactly jive with what the pastor "said" from the pulpit, they're going to get accosted and tongue-lashed.

I've never made it my goal to attend church in order to involuntarily be reprimanded for either questioning a standard interpretation or for offering another angle of interpretation. It's unfortunate that all too often there are Christians for whom a basic theological discussion becomes a contest of absolute assertions rather than a moment for casual conversation.
