  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

LazerPig did a short video on the ships released specs so far (take them for what they are at this stage). It wasn't very impressive. Has a lot of interesting tech and if this is being used as a vessel to get more funding to develop those, in the pigs words "it's so brilliant that we know that Hegseth had nothing to do with it." Also has the issue that if it does have the power source it was currently said to have, the ship needs to choose between firing offensive weaponry, firing defensive weapon or maneuvering. Yeah, that railgun ain't firing if you're moving.
CO: Full stop and prepare to fire.
OOD: Helm, Full stop.
Helm: Answering full stop.
OOD: Weapons, prepare to charge
Weapons officer: Laser cannons to standby
OOD: Captain, full stop and weapons ready to charge

There’ll be competitions to see which crew can bring their big, lumbering ship to a halt, where their speed won’t “hinder” their aim.
A stopped ship is probably as difficult to hit (the first time) as a moving one, I guess.
Gee, isn’t this all rather exciting!?

The real - and perhaps funnier - reason is that the ship would be incapable of walking and chewing gum at the same time, so to speak. There aren't any powerplants currently in service (except possibly the nuclear plant on an aircraft carrier) capable of producing enough power to both move the ship and fire the weapons simultaneously.

Why does everything have to be golden?

Is it because it is supposed to look good but serves no actual purpose? Or just because it's so pricey?

It has better salt water corrosion resistance than Platinum.

That's true - I suspect the Russians are in the process of rediscovering its mighty motive powers, and we can't fall behind the Reds!

Trump Class Battleships Will Be Nuclear Powered (Updated)

Equipping the Trump class with nuclear propulsion presents benefits, but also massive challenges, and Navy officials had been pushing back against the idea.

This is a huge development that will impact the cost and complexity of the design. With those issues in mind, now-former Secretary of the Navy John Phelan had said this was “unlikely” to happen just four weeks ago.

The Navy announced its intention to fit a nuclear propulsion system to the Trump class warships in its latest annual shipbuilding plan, which was released earlier today. The document also refers to these future large surface combatants as BBGNs, or nuclear-powered (N) guided-missile (G) battleships (BB). USNI News was first to report on this development.

The Navy has now outlined plans to acquire 15 Trump class BBGNs, one virtually every other year, between Fiscal Year 2028 and 2055.

An initial official estimate has put the price tag of each of these ships at $17 billion. [more than a Ford-class nuculur aircraft carrier]

The Navy has said in the past that each of the Trump class warships will displace approximately 35,000 tons, very roughly three times that of the newest Flight III subvariant of the Arleigh Burke class destroyer. They are also expected to be between 840 and 880 feet long, have a beam (the widest point in the hull) between 105 and 115 feet, and be able to reach a top speed greater than 30 knots.

Let me guess... This is so it can shoot and move at the same time?

Press (X) to doubt.

It's been 21 years since they started working on Ford Class carriers. They've got one (with #2 due next year). FFG(X) took almost 10 years to go from an existing base design to the discard pile. DDG(X) was on the drawing board for 4 years before being cancelled. And now the Navy expects people to believe they can go from a completely blank sheet of paper to an operational design in two years? The weapons systems (and power plant) they're proposing for this thing don't even exist yet - the US does not have an operational railgun, or a laser system of the specified power. The power plant for a Ford isn't going to fit into this thing. And that's before you realize that there aren't enough operational shipyards to build more ships of this size.

What I hear you saying is that it’s a stupid idea that’ll cost a lot of money and either grossly under deliver well over schedule or never materialize at all.

Naming it after Trump sounds perfect.

If you're going to put lasers and railguns on a battleship, seriously, just let the Japanese build it.

New House defense budget torpedoes Trump-class battleship

On Tuesday, the House Armed Services Committee released the draft of its annual defense policy bill ahead of the panel’s marathon National Defense Authorization Act markup next week, and Punchbowl News defense reporter Briana Reilly has revealed that the $1.15 trillion proposal explicitly bans the construction of the president’s requested Trump-class battleship.

Trump’s vision has been criticized by experts inside government and out. Some suggest that the cost is too high. Others note that warfare has changed dramatically since the battleship reigned supreme, and that modern conflict calls for inexpensive drones rather than enormous ships. And others still point out that much of the technology proposed for arming the ships simply doesn’t exist.

...the proposed budget bars construction of the ship until the Navy certifies it has met "sufficiently mature technology readiness level."
