CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Oh, I'm sure the media would've loved to run those headlines "Trump chickens out of the correspondence dinner because his fragile ego prevents him from being made fun of"
There's also Option B - people could stop drumming up the kind of social media ire that makes people so deranged that they feel like they're doing some sort of noble good by taking a shot at someone.
10 years of people mindlessly doom scrolling through "democracy is over if Trump isn't stopped!" echo chambers evidently has a psychological impact.

Like bitterly complaining about prices rising. About the price of gas. About not getting a refund for the now non existant tarrifs (I wonder if the penguins put in a request). About the war in Iran which doesn't seem to have an end point. About ICE raiding the suburbs and detaining their neighbours. About Trump posting images insulting their religion and him berating the pope.
I could keep going but I can't be bothered. But is that the social media ire you are talking about? It might be 'cos I see quite a lot of it as well. The point being that there are very good reasons for people getting very angree indeed. And seeing as there always have been and always will be some morons about that want to be a hero and take a bullet for the downtrodden, maybe...just maybe...you ought to consider why people are angry in the first place.
Look for the root cause. See if you can identify it. Shouldn't be hard. I've given you some clues.

Am not following his story closely but it appears that his main motivation came from the repellent speeches and public appearances of the president himself
I really believe that the unnecessary and narcissistic photos of the president on dollar bills and now passports issued in 2026 will be triggering for some people. While many who find them repugnant will just shrug and perhaps use credit cards and cash app to avoid looking at the money in their wallet, others may find it a continued reminder of our nation's disastrous decline since he has become president and they won't know what to do with those feelings. Not everyone is resilient. Not everyone is capable of waiting it out.
I pray no one else will throw away their lives on a fool's errand. We will need them on the happy day when we are finally able to move our country forward in the right direction.

The attempted shooter's manifesto didn't really touch on some of the things that you're mentioning.
The manifesto stated:
“I am no longer willing to permit a pedophile, rapist, and traitor to coat my hands with his crimes,”
That seems like a person who was inundated with more than just "these darn tariffs! why do my eggs cost a dollar more" content.
While the articles note that he was a part time tutor/teacher, the aspect that they're not mentioning as much is that he was pretty well immersed in the indie gaming community as well (meaning, he's probably no stranger to the content of various Twitch streamers)
And for those who aren't well-versed in that particular streamer subculture, they're a -- shall we say -- "unique" group of people with a flare for the dramatic and extreme rhetoric.

It's what he did in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 (if they had it that year - I don't recall) and 2025, so I doubt the press would have said much of anything. Him showing up was far bigger news than skipping would have been.

Historian Heather Cox Richardson.also mentioned that he was not rhe shooter. She is the most thorough, well researched source I know.
TBT, when it happened I just figured it was more political theater to rev up Trump's base because Americans are fed up with him. But now I wonder whether the man with the weapons was lured there to meet someone, given some incentive, and was framed.
Because I believe it will ultimately lead people to the truth, i'm not too upset, as long as innocent people are not hurt.
