  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

You were blaming an administration that is more preoccupied with "random vandals destroying cars as and advocates for human rights as terrorists" to do anything about mass shootings.
No I was commenting upon this administration’s priorities (at the time) to focus on labeling random vehicular vandalism as terrorism while actual armed, terrorizing individuals get barely a mention. Commentating on the current state of affairs isn’t laying any blame on anyone.

The Dune series of books started with the action one then got into the histories and machinations of the politics.
Quelling “rebellion” is a proper function of government; causing rebellion, not so much.
Still, it is in the “playbook”, it’s a valid political technique and strategy, but not in Democracies.

Commentating on the current state of affairs isn’t laying any blame on anyone.
“What are the administration’s priorities?“ is political discusssion 101, si.

Florida’s probe into OpenAI and the FSU shooting is now a criminal investigation, Uthmeier says

Records show suspect asked ChatGPT questions regarding guns, busy times on campus

“Unfortunately, what we’ve seen in our initial review is that ChatGPT offered significant advice to the shooter before he committed such heinous crimes,” Uthmeier told reporters at a news conference in Tampa.

“My prosecutors have looked at this and they’ve told me if it was a person on the other end of that screen, we would be charging them with murder,” Uthmeier said.

The investigation is the latest sign of the skepticism of Florida’s leaders toward AI.

Gov. Ron DeSantis has warned of the potential pitfalls of embracing AI without proper safeguards in place, and called on lawmakers to pass an “AI Bill of Rights” to protect consumers.

Lawmakers [haven't done that, but] did pass a measure putting more stringent requirements on massive data centers, which require large amounts of electricity and water to provide the power AI needs to operate.

This kind of deserves its own thread.

Campus shootings in the USA are so common they hardly even rate as "news". But a crminal accomplice type case against an AI company, thats a hot topic.

There is absolutely nothing at all normal about mass shooters. This is not a normal thing at all.
American mass shooters? It's pretty normal. Through most of the world, it's not; That's true.

You guys have normalized and accepted it. And don't say you haven't accepted it. If you did, you'd do something about it...but you all do nothing.
Every.
single.
time.

How can you say it's not normal when you guys never try to solve it? It must be normal and accepted.....

Yes it is, no point in pretending otherwise.
If it wasn't normal, it would have been dealt with in a meaningful way.

I find it kind of insulting when gun rights advocates suggest that school shootings and mass shootings are abhorrent and awful

How about when automobile owners suggest that reckless driving incidents are abhorrent and awful?

Not the same.

Is the sole purpose of the car to kill or injure someone?

Not sure what one has to do with another.

I use a car to drive to my job. I don't use my car to kill people on my way to work.

The position of dead kids being worth it to save gun owners from paperwork has gained traction. Unless the shooter can be classed as trans or tied to trans individuals in some way then clearly it’s time for government action.

That's not the sole purpose of a gun or a car. A gun, a car, the Internet, AI, these are all tools. Best to concentrate on the PEOPLE who misuse these tools rather than blame the crime on the tool.

Trust me, as someone looking in from another country, school shootings do appear to be normal in America.

Do you know how often parents in the UK worry about their children being shot in school? Literally only when we hear about it happening in America, then we forget about it compleatly until it happens to you again because it just doest happen over here.

Just...what?

A gun is something that is specifically designed to kill people. Now you can use yours to hammer in a nail or go target shooting with it if you like. But they were invented, designed and are manufactured to pump bullets into people.

Whether he is liberal or not, as I've said in these forums the hatred and violent rhetoric toward Trump and his followers, and the justification of the murder of the CEO, the vast majority of which comes from the left, needs to stop. They need to tone down the violent rhetoric or else this kind of violence (whether it instigated the actions of this individual or not) will continue.
When the president talks about bombing Iran into the dark ages (a genocidal war crime) perhaps our country's leaders need to set better examples.

I object to the idea that mass shooters have been normalized in the USA. In fact, there ain't nothing at all normal about anyone sociopathic enough to kill innocent people.
It's not so much that it's been normalized, but rather that the issue isn't talked about with the gravity it deserves, or is immediately talked about in the context of "this is why we need to advance the political agenda I've wanted" or "it's sad, but you better not try to do anything that inconveniences me as a result of this"

So normalization wouldn't be the right word... I don't think anyone actually thinks it's "normal", a better descriptor would be "a disconnect between the severity of the action vs. the response to the action"

I've used guns for hunting. The reason why something was invented or designed does not mean today's other uses are not worthwhile. GPS was originally designed and used for military purposes but I do not think it should be banned.

I've used guns for hunting.
So at some point you went into a shop that deals with hunting and asked the guy behind the counter if he had something that you could use to kill animals at a distance by causing a small projectile to slam into the beast at a high velocity. Something hand held perhaps. Something that any fool could use. You know, just point and shoot?

Gee, he'd say. Funny that you should ask...and a little while later you walked out of the store with...yes, a gun! Designed and manufactured to do exactly what you wanted it to do. Kill things. What you didn't do was head down to the nearest Ford dealer and ask what model they'd recommend for running down deer.

Hey, get serious and don't treat me like an idiot.
