  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Resurfaced clips from top Democrats echoing Trump on birthright citizenship spark online uproar: 'Wow'

Harry Reid and Dianne Feinstein both made arguments in 1993 now echoed by the Trump administration

As birthright citizenship is debated in the Supreme Court, resurfaced videos of top Democrats echoing the argument of the Trump administration sparked a conservative uproar on social media.
"If making it easy to be an illegal alien isn’t enough, how about offering a reward for being an illegal immigrant?" Sen. Harry Reid said on the Senate floor in 1993.
"No sane country would do that. Right? Guess again. If you break our laws by entering this country without permission and give birth to a child, we reward that child with U.S. citizenship and [a] guarantee of full access to all public and social services this society provides — and that’s a lot of services."

Republicans were lukewarm on abortion before they started opposing it.

"Historically, the GOP was the more liberal party on abortion — especially given the Democratic Party’s strong appeal to Catholics across the North. That began to change in the early 1970s, as various states loosened their abortion restrictions. At the national level, a Republican shift on abortion first became evident during Reagan’s dramatic 1976 primary challenge against President Gerald Ford."

Both Harry Reid and Dianne Feinstein have repented from their positions and publicly acknowledged that their earlier stances were a mistake. They evolved their views toward compassion, making these thirty-year-old quotes an inaccurate reflection of their final convictions.
On a personal note. I have repented on many issues in my life . This is growth towards righteousness and should not be used as a tool for the purpose of political attacks.

Also from the OP:

Reid, who died in 2021 at the age of 82, ultimately changed his tune on the legislation and said in 2018 that the bill was a "mistake."

It’d be amusing to dig up stuff that Republicans were saying in the early 90’s.

Democrats who fiercely resist any reform to this policy are not defending constitutional originalism
The "constitutional originalism" of the 2nd Amendment was for the keeping of a well-regulated militia.

The Constitution is supposed to be able to grow. That's why it can be amended.

While you're at it, look up what evangelicals were saying about abortion prior to 1980.

It clearly shows how they have gone from...
If you quoted something I said on any subject a few decades ago then I would politely demand that you ask me what my position is at this time.

I will judge you on the views which you espouse now. What would be the point of me doing so on views that you no longer hold? You'd rightly criticise me if I were to do that.

What makes it acceptable for you to do it now?

Harry Reid and Dianne Feinstein both made arguments in 1993 now echoed by the Trump administration

This was before they realised it would more than likely add to the Democrat roster.

They are both dead now. Why would opinions held 30 years ago by dead folk long out of office be of more than passing interest to any but history buffs?

So, Democrats have come around to the right way of thinking on birthright citizenship, eh? Good for them. People need to get with the program. If you're born here, you're a citizen.

Well, the Democrats never drove Reid and Feinstein out of their party for having different idea.

It has been heartbreaking over the past seven or eight years to see well-respected Republicans with common sense, ethical standards, and some respect for the common good be pushed out of the party and forced out of Congress. Jeff Flake, Romney, Adam Kinzinger, Liz Cheney, etc.

Most parties would want to keep their best and brightest. The Republican purge might give them Trump inspired ideological "purity," but in actuality it has contaminated it.

Fienstein should have been removed from office during her last term, instead of doing a Weekend at Bernie's impression, but the boomers have demonstrated they have no intention of leaving power in any manner other than feet first country and party be damned.

Congress is about the only place where a boomer can hide from the younger crowds running the data-harvesting tech industry.
