  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Palm Sunday has passed, next is Easter Sunday and Holy Week with the Easter Triduum.

I'm finding that in my area too, including in my own parish. I drove to a different parish two counties away to find a Vigil last night.

I am considering attending the entire Triduum at another parish next year since mine does not do the Vigil. As I think about it, it seems only right since it is one service over three days. Up until now, I have attended Maundy Thursday and Good Friday at my parish while going elsewhere for the Vigil.

Anyway, Christ is Risen, Alleluia!

I am just trying to find out how much of "Easter" tradition comes from the actual New Testament

we all know Jesus was crucified on Friday, in the tomb for the Sabbath and resurrected on Sunday.

But that still does not give us "Easter", or a bunny or painted eggs
As other have noted "Easter" is a name which English Christians applied to the paschal feast beginning in the 7th century AD. If the name bothers you, don't use it.

The earliest mention of a colored Easter egg that I can find in England is in the year 1290. The custom probably is derived from Lenten fasting regulations.

The Easter Hare, along with the Easter Fox and the Easter Stork, was invented by as a childrens' tale by 17th-century German Lutherans.

You will find no mention of hares or eggs in the Easter liturgies of Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Anglican, or Lutheran believers.
