  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

For instance, I was involved in targeting during the Persian Gulf War. We did bomb bridges and power plants, but those were strategically chosen. The bridges we bombed were those we knew from intelligence carried military communication cables. When we bombed a power plant, we first selected those we knew directly fed military installations, and we precisely struck portions of power plants only to reduce their capacity. Any more than that is a war crime.
Which is why Palestine fighters hid in schools and hospitals and the Iranian civilians are now being commanded to surround government and strategic targets. to take advantage of the so called rules of war. Then what? Say sorry?

I said it first. Pope's just jumping on my bandwagon.

Pope says Trump's threat to destroy Iranian civilization is 'unacceptable'

Pope Leo XIV says that U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat to destroy Iranian civilization is “truly unacceptable” and that any attacks on civilian infrastructure violate international law

Leo recalled his Easter appeal for peace and to reject war "especially a war which many people have said is an unjust war, which is continuing to escalate, and which is not resolving anything.”

He invited all people of good will to contact their political leaders and congressional representatives to remind them that attacks on civilian infrastructure are “against international law" and also are a "sign of the hatred, the division, the destruction human beings are capable of, and we all want to work for peace.”

I've mentioned before that the Laws of War were written by the Western military powers. They did not write themselves into losing wars.

The law permits striking military facilities even if there are civilians in them, and striking civilian facilities if there are military in them. In other words, the enemy's military can always be struck legally wherever they are.

But Trump is explicitly threatening to destroy civilian facilities with no connection to military necessity, which is a war crime.

But they would be also punished if they refused. Probably fired and get replaced by someone more pliable, who would then hope for a presidential pardon.
The positive defense in a court-martial of refusing to obey orders is merely to cite the law that would have been broken by obeying those orders. Edit: If the defense can cite the law that would have been broken by obeying the order, the case would never even go to court.

Conduct of war and protection of civilians is in Part V of the Law of War manual.

A presidential pardon would protect an officer from prosecution in the US, but every officer in the chain would still be liable for prosecution in international courts if he's caught outside US borders.

That would make those officers undeployable--and deployability is an absolute requirement for officer advancement. Even if it's possible to limit a career to within the US (it happens sometimes by accident), there are always many equally qualified candidates for every promotion slot, and those candidates won't have deployability limitations.

Democrat Harry Truman, along with the leaders of China and England, threatened "prompt and utter destruction" of Japan in July of 1945.

And nuked two cities with no military value to send Russia a message even though they were still allies. The games people play... as Joe South sang

War was declared on Japan by an act of Congress. When did we declare war on Iran?

Actually, the two cities did have military value, and they were on the bombing list anyway.

Granted, the plan even without the nukes was to level every large and medium Japanese city.

That was then, this is now. We've grown since then.

And the current law is what the current law is.

This is what it so tiring talking to civilians about war.

Why, when the war was already winding down and being fought on the opposite side of the country? Off course they did the same with Germany, especially Dresden. All just political maneuvering in the games they play at everyone's expense, but not their own, remember the Creedence song 'I ain't no senators son'.. People is dumb.

Everything actually known about the Japanese indicated it would take slaughtering the majority of their population to force them to surrender.

In the 1980s, I knew an elderly Japanese woman who had been a girl in Osaka during the war. She said that she and other girls had been taught to carve bamboo daggers, and when the Americans invaded they were to lure an American soldier close, stab him, and then kill themselves.

Which the Russians and Chinese were already doing. Self-justification always rewrites history.

Amazing what an oil embargo will lead people to do. Not much has changed in the game. In the end it is all about mammon.

Why do humans dwell on the ways and will of mankind when it is Jesus who said that division was between the Kingdom and the world of man? Where He said that those loyal to the world would never gain entrance to the Kingdom. He plainly said we are at fault if we remain worldly, so I suggest people deal with it accordingly rather than making this an us-against-them thing like we see everyday.
