  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Apparently, some would have preferred that the Iranian terrorist regime would still be able to threaten the world with thousands upon thousands of missiles and drones while at the same time working towards nuclear weapons to terrorize the world. I do hope that I'm wrong about this. However, all of the extreme anti-Trump biases which I am seeing on the forums tends to make me think that I am right.

Edifying but irrelevant to the factual topic of this thread.

Is the derision of the Strait of Hormuz is closed substantially because of Trump’s decision to bomb Iran and consequently, Trump and the U.S. have a obligation to resolve the closure? No. Furthermore, such derision does not constitute as “extreme anti-Trump biases.”

Of course, Britain and others are contemplating the necessity of playing the role of janitor to cleanup the reasonably foreseeable mess of the Strait’s close because of U.S. military action in Iran, they and the rest of the globe are adversely impacted by the Strait’s closure and collateral damage of Trump’s military action in Iran.

It's the classic -- let them shoot you until their out of bullets, because then they'll have no more bullets to threaten you -- strategy. Always a winner.

But not surprised, right, by this Admin’s invocation of this facile strategy?

I'm not sure they have anything that even reaches the level of facile strategy.

...it comes as a result of the American President starting a war that predictably led to the Strait of Hormuz closing. And now this same president want's to wash his hand and go home.
Who else was famous for washing his hands?

But how? America destroyed their ability.
The enemy is weak, but also terribly strong. That way we’re “correct” no matter what we do.

US understood not to be invited directly to talks that will explore ways of reopening critical waterway

The UK will convene 35 countries – excluding the US – to explore ways to reopen the strait of Hormuz, the vital shipping route for oil and gas that has been blocked by Iran.

Keir Starmer, the prime minister, said the next phase of discussions in the joint British and French efforts to secure the waterway would be held on Thursday, with Yvette Cooper, the foreign secretary, alongside international leaders.

Starmer said on Wednesday the meeting would bring together 35 countries to “assess all viable diplomatic and political measures we can take to restore freedom of navigation, guarantee the safety of trapped ships and seafarers and to resume the movement of vital commodities”.

Makes sense, the USA already has an easy way to reopening the strait by stopping to attack.

Except that is a false dichotomy... and yet the Trump cult keeps repeating it.

So in essence you're saying that our options were:
  1. Attack Iran immediately and unilaterally, without any attempts to entertain other options, consult experts, or consult with allies.
  2. Allow Iran to "terrorize the world" with missiles and nukes.
Well of course... if those are the only two options available, choose option 1!

The problem is there are people out there who are smart enough to see that those were not the only options available - and presenting them as the only options is nothing more than a poor attempt to cover up how incompetent and arrogant this administration has been, and the terrible choices they have made.

Not to mention that Iran being "weeks away" from a nuclear bomb is a lie, and nuclear experts have attested to that.

You are not a liar, but you are repeating other people's lies.
Iran wasn't getting nuclear weapons.
There was a deal with Iran about limiting its enrichment facilities (signed in 2015) and Iran was fully compliant with that deal. So said all other signing parties including the IAEA that performed inspections on site. Trump blew up that deal in 2018 and Iran (not entirely unexpected) started to enrich uranium again. So now Iran is a nuclear threat purely due to Trump’s stupidity.

Sanctions against Iran lifted after compliance with nuclear deal
https://www.reuters.com/article/us-iran-nuclear-visit-idUSKCN0RK0RX20150920/

And here is a list of all the reports of the IAEA on Iran:

IAEA and Iran - IAEA Board Reports
to quote the IAEA report of 2017:

7. Iran has not pursued the construction of the Arak heavy water research reactor (IR-40 Reactor) based on its original design.9,10 Iran has not produced or tested natural uranium pellets, fuel pins or fuel assemblies specifically designed for the support of the IR-40 Reactor as originally designed, and all existing natural uranium pellets and fuel assemblies have remained in storage under continuous Agency monitoring (paras 3 and 10).
9. Iran has not carried out activities related to reprocessing at the Tehran Research Reactor (TRR) and the Molybdenum, Iodine and Xenon Radioisotope Production (MIX) Facility or at any of the other facilities it has declared to the Agency (paras 18 and 21).13
11. Iran has continued the enrichment of UF6 at FEP.15 Iran has not enriched uranium above 3.67% U-235 (para. 28). 12. Throughout the reporting period, Iran’s total enriched uranium stockpile has not exceeded 300 kg of UF6 enriched up to 3.67% U-235 (or the equivalent in different chemical forms) (para. 56). The quantity of 300 kg of UF6 corresponds to 202.8 kg of uranium.16 13. As of 5 November 2017, the quantity of Iran’s uranium enriched up to 3.67% U-235 was 96.7 kg,17 based on the JCPOA and decisions of the Joint Commission.18

This is a lie from Hegseth.
The USA started this war i 1953 with the eviction of the elected president Mosadekh.

Iran started this war over 2500 years ago when Xerxes I attached Israel.

It is Mossadegh NOT Mosadekh, and before you accuse me of deceit perhaps you should read the thread and offline sources on the Mossadegh's attempt to make himself dictator of Iran in 1953.

The main direct beneficiaries of such a reopening are the Gulf States, China and India - 90% of this oil goes toward Asia. Indirectly we would all benefit from a lower oil price.

Maybe a little bit of carrot (European diplomacy) and a lot more stick (US Military) might undo the knots?
