  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Why Was The Sacred Heart of Christ Pierced By a Centurion’s Spear?

As we move closer to Holy Week, it seems like a most acceptable time to meditate upon and enter deeply into the most sacred and salvific mystery of the Crucifixion of our Lord. Perhaps one often overlooked event in Christ’s Passion and Death is more mysterious, more important, and more supernatural significant than meets the eye. While some Christians may be unaware that the Sacred Heart of Christ was pierced by a Roman Centurion (John 19:32-34), and many who are aware assume it was merely a merciless act of desecration by a sadistic soldier, the piercing was arguably one of the most cosmically consequential acts in salvation history. In fact, the symbolic emanations and supernatural ramifications of St. Longinus opening the Heart of Jesus resounds down through history with tectonic reverberations in the spiritual realm. Make no mistake, this was no random act; it was the way God chose to redeem humanity and renew the face of the earth. In fact, St. John thought it was so important, that he stepped out of his narrator’s role to emphatically emphasize “He who saw it has borne witness — his testimony is true, and he knows that he tells the truth — that you also may believe.” (John 19:34). This would be an incredibly odd overstatement if this posthumous piercing was merely a meaningless, merciless act of Roman brutality.

Many, many different meanings have been attached to the piercing of Christ's side by mystics and theologians over the centuries, but at the time, it most likely a simple action to ascertain whether or not He was dead. The Pharisees didn't want the bodies hanging on the crosses during Passover; however, the Romans weren't going to take down a condemned man until the man was dead. This was why the soldiers were ordered to break the legs of the victims: if a man couldn't raise himself up using his legs in order to breathe, he would suffocate (and die) that much faster. Then the bodies could be taken down, and the Pharisees would be placated.

But, when they came to Jesus, He was already dead. However, to be absolutely certain that He was dead, one of the soldiers was ordered to prod the body with a spear, to see if there was any reaction. All that happened was a release of blood and water. The medical reason for this was that Jesus had lost a lot of blood due to the scourging, and His body was trying to repair the damage. But since He was missing such a large volume of red blood cells, His body was producing lymphatic fluid, made up mostly of white blood cells. This collected in His lungs and in the pericardium around His heart, and when His flesh was pierced, it flowed out.

At the time, it was just a means to double-check for actual death. Since then, however, the Holy Spirit has instructed us on the profound and deep meanings and truths of the loss of the blood and water. :)

That’s the way I always understood it as well.
