• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I don't have OCD, but everyone here in my family is convinced that my mom has it. Although she has not been formally diagnosed by any doctor.

She is a neat freak to a fault and is constantly re-arranging things; sometimes she takes it too far and misplaces our things and we get angry with her because when she does that we can't find anything. Nothing is in the place we remember it being. This makes life annoying. I guess she is not hurting anyone, but its still annoying nonetheless.

I am sorry you are struggling with this. It seems like too many people nowadays have mental health issues. I don't know why. I have always wondered if it was due to a poor diet and lack of exercise. Other nations look at us and they think we are fat and lazy, spoiled rotten Americans. I hope that doesn't ring true for many of us who actually are American. Maybe we can do better?

I will pray for you.

Thank you. I was interested in hearing people's experiences.
My OCD has mostly taken the form of religious and moral obsessions, and scrupulosity. These kinds of obsessions can include things like obsessive fear of lying or doing other sins, fears of a spiritual nature such as losing one's salvation, or unwanted thoughts and urges about doing inappropriate or violent things. People who have OCD tend to have brains that work differently from the average person, so OCD has a biological component and can be genetic. They are often perfectionistic and highly analytical, and common compulsions include things like ruminating, excessive researching, asking for reassurance, or avoiding things they are afraid of doing. Most of the resources I shared in my previous comment are about people's personal experiences with OCD, so feel free to check those out if you want to learn more, and feel free to ask more questions on here if you want.

Hhmm....that's interesting. I would think that anyone with a mental disorder probably has a brain that functions differently than a normal person's brain, mind you. That's why they are called disorders.

Neuroscientists are people that study the human brain, right? Maybe they would know more.

I would respectfully disagree with you, though, that people with OCD have a "different" (or inferior or dysfunctional or abnormal) brain. I find that reductive and demeaning... I think it even contributes to the problem. People with anxiety commonly ascribe negative meaning and importance to things that otherwise would have little. In other words, we like to make tempests in teapots. The truth is, there is often nothing particular going on. The danger perceived is exaggerated and illusory. OCD is seeing problems where there are really none but believing firmly that there is or might be. People with OCD have a lot of trouble tolerating doubt and uncertainty. We prefer to assume the worst and jump to conclusions. People with OCD are just that, normal people, with a common problem called "OCD". OCD is just a set of psychological tendencies, attitudes and behaviors that some people have.

I agree that OCD includes psychological tendencies and behaviors. My comment about the physiological component was referring to things like brain scans showing that people with OCD tend to have some overactive areas of the brain, and also neurotransmitter imbalances, etc. Thank you for your thoughts!

Yeah and this raises the chicken or the egg question. Do they have these experiences because of brain abnormalities or do they have brain abnormalities because of their attitudes, beliefs, emotions and so on. I lean towards the second option, because I believe in the soul. I believe both the body and the soul interact, of course, and influence one another, but that our experiences are not just passively determined by physiological processes. We are more than mere sentient machines! We are people with bodies and we are truly free. We aren't mere observers of our lives. We are active participants. The unbelieving perspective on this tends to minimize the reality of human agency and self-determination.
