In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

...more reporting (based on Iranian sources....NYT's has verified photographs)

Iran’s Red Crescent and several state news outlets said more than 60 people were killed in the strike on Shajarah Tayyebeh school in the southern town of Minab. By Saturday evening, Iran’s state news broadcaster, IRIB, raised the toll to 85 dead and 93 injured.

Videos verified by The Times show that the school is adjacent to a naval base belonging to the country’s most powerful military force, the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps, or IRGC. Another video verified by The Times on Saturday showed a strike hitting the same IRGC base.

Asked to respond to reports of the strike, a CENTCOM spokesperson said: “We are aware of reports concerning civilian harm resulting from ongoing military operations. We take these reports seriously and are looking into them. The protection of civilians is of utmost importance, and we will continue to take all precautions available to minimize the risk of unintended harm.”

.....and a 2nd school, near the residence of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, was reportedly hit in Tehran:

Another strike appeared to have hit the Hedayat High School in the capital, Tehran, near 72nd Square in the district of Narmak, local media and rights groups said. Two students died in that attack, according to the U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency, which focuses on Iran.

Some of them could have possibly become nuclear scientists. Longer term thinking.

President Donald Trump, who joined Israel in joint military strikes on Iran in the early morning hours of February 28, had some strong opinions against going to war with Tehran – before he was sitting in the Oval Office.

In 2012 and 2013, Trump repeatedly insinuated that then-President Barack Obama would start a war with Iran to shore up his re-election effort and to distract from his supposed faults as a leader.

Obama never did attack Iran. That cannot be said for Trump, who has now attacked the Middle Eastern republic three times during across his two terms in office.

On January 17, 2012, Trump wrote on social media that he believed Obama would "attack Iran in order to get re-elected."

He repeated his prediction in August of that year, insisting that Obama would, "in some form" attack Iran before the election.

He did it again on October 9, 2012.

"Now that Obama's poll numbers are in tailspin - watch for him to launch a strike in Libya or Iran. He is desperate," Trump wrote.

Later that same month, Trump warned the GOP not to "let Obama play the Iran card in order to start a war in oder too get elected--be careful Republicans!"

On at least three other occasions, Trump predicted that Obama would attack Iran, claiming he would do so to "save face," or "because of his inability to negotiate properly" or to "show how tough he is."

Now, eight months before what is predicted to be a brutal midterm election cycle for Republicans, Trump has launched a military strike on Iran with the purpose of driving regime change in the nation.

IRANIAN HISTORY LESSON - 1953 to 2025
***********************************************

1) In 1949, Mohammad Mossadeqh formed the National Front Party in Iran with the aim of upholding the 1906 Constitution.

2) One of the main goals of the National Front was to nationalize Iran’s oil industry; the British continued to control most of Iran’s oil revenue through the Anglo-Persian Oil Company!

3) In 1951, the National Front Party was democratically elected with Mossadeqh as its prime minister - his intention was for Iran to followed through on his plans to nationalize the oil industry, having created government's National Iranian Oil Company to operate the industry!

4) Prime Minister Mossadeqh was viewed by many Iranians a nationalist leader leading the nation from colonial status of Britain to that of an independent nation - which included assuming control of its own resources!

5) Mossadeqh was named Time magazine's "Man of the Year" in 1952, but for Western leaders with corporations having economic interests in Iran and the Middle East, this set a precedent they were unwilling to tolerate!

6) In 1953 the British MI-6 and the CIA undertook "Operation Ajax," succeeding in promoting a coup that included busloads of paid protesters, bribed officials and conspiring with the Iranian military to create the illusion that it was the Iranian people who were responsible for ousting Mossadegh!
- Prime Minister Mossadeqh was removed from office, served a 3 year term for treason and was subsequently placed under house arrest for the rest of his life!.

7) Britain and the USA governments replaced Mossadegh with Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the Shah of Iran who ruled from 1953 to 1979 - when he was overthrown by a coalition led by the Muslim cleric,

Ayatollah Khomeini!
- Although the Shah's regime was considered highly progressive by Western standards, his "White Revolution" introduced reforms that alienated conservative Muslim factions in Iranian society!

8) As a result of the Iran's Revolution in 1979, that nation's historic monarchy was replaced by its "polar opposite" an Islamic Republic with Khomeini assuming the role of the Shah as its Supreme Leader!
- Internally, the new Islamic Republic alienated those in society who under the Shah had adopted his vision of Iran as a modern, secular nation!

9) Externally, as a Islamic Republic, Iran supported a number of "terrorist" groups, like Hezbollah in southern Lebanon,, which would conduct a series of attacks against Israel!
- Iran would also come into direct conflict with America, whose interests in the Middle East included preventing it from adding nuclear weapons to its military arsenal!
*************************************************************
The major lesson to be learned from Iran's history over the past 74 years, is that America now faces a hostile Iran - largely of its own making!

Had the USA and Britain accepted and nurtured the fledgling Mossadegh democratically elected government, that was supported by Iranian society, its conceivable that these Western nations might now be dealing with Iran as a functioning democracy and ally in the Middle East!

Instead, these 2 nations chose to subvert the Mossadegh government, that represented the one and only regime the would attempt to introduce a functioning democracy in Iran's history!

The British and American governments, in their infinite wisdom, opted for the short term solution of regime change - appointing of a new Iranian leader who would allow private corporations to retain Iranian oil interests!

The misguided actions of these 2 nations inadvertently triggered a series of events that would haunt them for the past 54 years, an Islamic Republic which would assume control of foreign oil interests!

The net result of undermining the Mossadagh government would result in 2 successive authoritarian regimes, both lacking democratic institutions that would legitimize a range of concerns that would be expected to emerge in a nation with 93.2 million Iranian citizens!

The open hostility that existed between Iran's Islamic Republic and the USA resulted in America being labelled as "THE GREAT SATAN!"

Sometimes a well placed act of terrorism, disinformation, & chaos can do more to write history. In 1978, Iran was divided and radical Islamic & Marxist terrorists were destabilizing society. The burning of a movie theater & murder of theater customers in Abadan in 1978 by radical Islamic terrorists & disinformation blaming the Shah was pivotal to the 1979 revolution.

There is a book written by a relative of Ali Khameini on the impact much of this incident had on Iran’s destiny. I haven’t read the book but I have an article overview of the book. I cannot seem to paste any excerpts on the article pdf to my iPhone. The article is about 12 pages.

Strangely missing… all our friends on the right cheerleading this administration as they plunge the Middle East into another pointless war.

Be patient. The propagandists need time to get their talking points straight. Once they do, you’ll hear about it.

Trump's poll numbers are historically low. So.......

I think Trump is desperate because of his poll numbers and the Epstein files.

First thing that comes to mind. I wouldn't mind if the autocracy fell in Iran, though. If we aren't careful, we could end up like Iran, an autocracy, run by religious nationalists.

Iranian dissident site, Iran international indicates many Iranians are actually hopeful now that Khameini has been killed. I am not taking any position on this just noting a report from a website I have followed over the years. It was on Iran international that I found out that many Iranians actually opposed Hamas.

As horrible as Khameini was his soul must still be prayed for and the greater hope for the souls of those he will have to answer for.

It's a sign that there may be hope. I don't have much confidence in this regime to take advantage of it, but if they listen to our senior officers, it might just happen.

This thread is so deranged it's completely off the hinges. I doubt any conservative would waste their time in a thread like this.

Yes.
Love him or hate him, he’s our “pick”; the 49.8% have spoken, but we’re all responsible.

You people are so cold hearted. You complain about killing a mass murderer.
Our country assassinated (or helped, at least) another country’s Leader.
Why is that “good”?
How does that make us “the good guys”?

Power vacuums are best avoided by having a plan if this (or that) should “happen”.
With the recent protests/killings, in Iran, these would have been revised and updated.
We might not know who’s “next”, but the Iranians do.
