Many christians believe that God loves everyone, and love us unconditionally no matter we do but is this true? Can we keep sinning and walking in the flesh and God will still love us? Are there conditions to God's love for us? Is he a covenant God? How do we show God we love him?

According to the Bible, God is love (1 John 4:8) but God also punishes the sinner. We cannot continue to sin WILLFULLY and believe that God still loves us. God says "I love them that love me;" (Proverbs 8:17). So how do we show God we love him? "If ye love me, keep my commandments." (John 14:15). What commandments? Those same ten commandments that God gave to Moses on Mount Sinai. These commandments are not without consequences. To sin is to break God's Law-"Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is transgression of the law." (1 John 3:4). So according to the previous scriptures God only loves those who love him and we show we love him by keeping his commandments. Praise be to God, "In that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." (Romans 5:6) There is no way we can be clean before God and that is why he came in the flesh to take our place and become sin on our behalf. (John 1:1,14; Hebrews 2:17, 2 Cor 5:21) So we are to trust Jesus, God in the flesh, as our savior and put our faith in the sacrifice that he made on the cross and in nothing that we do. However, "For if we sin willfully after that we have received the knowledge of truth, there remained no more sacrifice for sins." (Hebrews 10:26) If there is no sacrifice available for you, then God's wrath abides upon you because he hates sin and your sin is not removed. (John 3:36)
"But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burnt with fire and brimstone:which is the second death." (Revelation 21:8) God is not a one-sided God, he is infinitely loving God and infinitely just God. He will punish the sinner, He cannot lie (Titus 1:2) "...which God, that cannot lie..."
"Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments(The same commandments God gave to Moses on Mount Sinai): for this is the whole day of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil." (Ecclesiastes 12:13-14). "Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever liveth and maketh a lie." (Revelation 22:14-15) So we see, even in the last book in the bible you still have to keep the 10 commandments to get into the kingdom of God. We see that sinner who fails to repent will be burning in the lake of fire(the second death).

“For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭8‬:‭38‬-‭39‬ ‭KJV‬‬

You won’t find “unconditional” love in the Bible - the same way you won’t find “omnipotent”. What you will find is a description of God’s love that manifests itself as unconditional. You are correct in that the Lord hates sin, & that our sin is disobedience, but the Lord has loved you in spite of it!

“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭5‬:‭8‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Hell is what freewill’d creatures get when what they think they want is not God; Hell is not merely just a punishment - it is the finalization of desire. If a man insists that what he wants is not God, then Hell is simply the full realization of that desire. In essence, we choose to go to Hell. It’s not so much the sin that will damn you but the unrepentant heart that’ll send you.

“Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭1‬:‭24‬, ‭26‬, ‭28‬ ‭KJV‬‬

You won’t find “unconditional” love in the Bible - the same way you won’t find “omnipotent”.
“And I heard, as it were, the voice of a great multitude, as the sound of many waters and as the sound of mighty thunderings, saying, “Alleluia! For the Lord God Omnipotent reigns!” (Re 19:6 NKJV)

Even if the English word "omnipotent" were not in the English bible at all, surely what is important is whether or not the meaning of the word "omnipotent" is in the bible. "Omnipotent" means "all powerful" or almighty". Think how many times the word "almighty" is used about God.

The same goes for "unconditional love." That actual phrase is not there, but the meaning is, as for example, in what John wrote:

“We love Him because He first loved us.” (1Jo 4:19 NKJV)

Also, Paul wrote:

“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Ro 5:8 NKJV)

Divide the parties as Jesus did and the sights become much clearer.

In this world we have people, seen.

And we have enemies, unseen, the devil and his messengers.

Yes. God loves all people unconditionally
AND
Simultaneously hates the devil and his messengers.

There is no one sided answer

No amount of good acting is going to get the devil and his messengers actions IN PEOPLE off the hook.

And yes. Those enemies are active in all people.

One will find in the scriptures that the fundamental duty of man is to love God as well as to love his neighbor. Man has not understood the significance or the implications of not adhering to this duty. The word love in itself is beyond definition and it implies different things to different people. And because of this ambiguity man has decided to apply his or her definition of love to God’s commandment to love rather than finding out the meaning of love according to God’s standards. Man as a whole has never fully understood the word love as God defines it in His commandments and one can confirm that by simply looking at the condition of the world. People relate love to emotions and they base it on terms of feeling. The problem with this is when feeling change so does ones love. The love that God requires of man is one of will. And this love is a deliberate attitude whereas circumstances and changes in situations do not impact ones actions. In examining the scriptures one will find that God is clear in describing how man is to love Him. And while the bible shows a broad spectrum of love the love that God requires from man is well defined and is based on obedience.

In the days of Jesus, the religious leaders were constantly questioning Jesus in order to test Him and on this occasion a lawyer asked Jesus what is the great commandment?

Matthew (22:35) Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying, (36) Master, which is the great commandment in the law?

Jesus reply was the 1st great commandment was to love God and the 2nd was to love ones neighbor. These were given as a commandment for man to love.

Matthew (22:37) Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

(38) This is the first and great commandment. (39) And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

One should note that by following the 1st and 2nd great commandment they will be adhering to the 10 commandments issued by Moses. If they love the Lord they won’t have any other Gods before him, or make any graven images or take his name in vain, they will remember his Sabbath and if they love their neighbor they will honor their Father and Mother and they won’t kill or commit adultery or steal or bear false witness nor will they covet. This is why Jesus goes on to state that on these two commandments hang the law and the prophets. Because by fulfilling these two commandments one fulfills the law.

(40) On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

Jesus stated that these 2 commandments where the 2 great commandments however the following verses will show that these commandments were not new and that the Jews and Jesus was speaking to were aware of them. These were the same ones issued to Israel by Moses.

Deuteronomy (6:5) And thy shall love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.

Leviticus (19:18) Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the LORD.

Now that it has been established that man was commanded to love one needs to examine the scriptures to get an understanding of the love required in these great commandments.

In the following verses Moses is telling the Israelites that God chose them strictly out of His love for them.Deuteronomy (7:7) The LORD did not set his love upon you, nor choose you, because ye were more in number than any people; for ye were the fewest of all people: (8) But because the LORD loved you, and because he would keep the oath which he had sworn unto your fathers, hath the LORD brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you out of the house of bondmen, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.

(9) Know therefore that the LORD thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations;

Note in verse (9) Moses states a condition that God requires in order for Him to keep covenant and have mercy. And that is an individual must love God and keep His commandments. The scriptures will show that there is only one way to love God and that is by keeping His commandments.

Note that Jesus states in the following verse that in order to love Him one has to keep His commandments.

John (14:15) If ye love me, keep my commandments.

Jesus further defines the love He requires when He states in the following verse that those who have His commandments and keep them are those that love Him. One does not have to guess at Jesus definition of love He made it clear.

John (14:21) He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

Jesus also reinforced what was said in Deuteronomy verse (9) by adding that those that love Him will be loved by the Father. How does one love Jesus? by keeping His commandments and Moses said God will keep covenant and have mercy with those who keep His commandments. So therefore by following Jesus one shall receive love from Him as well as mercy from the Father.

Note in these scriptures it did not say those who profess their love for Jesus or those that claim that Jesus knows what in their heart. Jesus made a clear and direct statement if one has His commandments and keeps them they are the ones who love Him. The statement that Jesus made as well as the condition Moses gave in Deuteronomy verse (9) were based on behalf of an individuals actions not their feeling or emotions or conditions. To exhibit love towards Jesus one must engage in a specific action and that action is being obedience to the word of God. And one will see that they are to be obedient regardless of their feeling or the surrounding circumstances.

Jesus states again in the following verses what is required of an individual to receive His love. John (15:9) As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love. (10) If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.

Notice Jesus use the word if ye keep my commandments, so what happen if ye do not keep his commandments. The above verse shows to be loved of Jesus one needs to be obedient. Jesus also states in verse (10) that He was obedient to the Father by keeping His commandments and therefore abides in His love.

Yes it is.

Yes we can.

Are there conditions to God's love for us?

No there are not.
How do we show God we love him?
This is where obeying comes in, but now you are refering to us loving God, not God loving us.

We see that sinner who fails to repent will be burning in the lake of fire(the second death).
Yes, because if people do not love God, God will not force them into His company forever.

What about John 3:16 or 1 John 4:19?

““For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” John‬ ‭3‬:‭16‬ NASB

“We love, because He first loved us.”
‭‭1 John‬ ‭4‬:‭19‬ ‭NASB1995‬‬

The whole world has never been obedient to God and yet He still loved them before they loved Him and before they were obedient. This is why He takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked.

“Do I have any pleasure in the death of the wicked,” declares the Lord God, “rather than that he should turn from his ways and live?”
‭‭Ezekiel‬ ‭18‬:‭23‬ ‭NASB1995‬‬

I think the definition of love is the same in the Hebrew language as it is in the Greek as well as in English.

Romans 8:38-39 is another example that even if we are disobedient God still loves us, but that doesn’t guarantee a person’s salvation.

“For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

‭‭Romans‬ ‭8‬:‭38‬-‭39‬ ‭NASB1995‬‬

(9) Know therefore that the LORD thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations;

Thank you for this edifying post. What happens when we do not keep Gods commandments? Does he still love us?

Thou hatest all workers of iniquity.
Psalm 5:5
The Hebrew word Sané can also mean detest, enmity, enemy, and turns away.

The Greek word Agapao only means love, it has no alternative definitions.

““For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.”

Yes He loved us before we were obedient, and while we are disobedient.

Amen, the words Trinity and Bible aren’t in the bible either.

Thank you for this edifying post. What happens when we do not keep Gods commandments? Does he still love us?
So, what happened in the past has an effect on us today and the one thing that happened in the past that has a profound effect on us is man's iniquity. In the days of Adam, his iniquity brought death to himself and all mankind. "Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:" (Romans 5:12)

In the days of Noah, God destroyed man from the face of the earth because of his wickedness (iniquity). "And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. And the LORD said,” I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them." But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD. These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God. Noah begat three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth. The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence. And God looked upon the earth, and behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth. And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth." (Genesis 6:5-13). As a result of Noah's righteousness, only he, his wife, his three sons and their wives were saved from destruction.

Now, in these the last days, God has said that because of the overspreading of iniquity; (iniquity is one of the signs and factors of the end of the world). “And Jesus went out, and departed from the temple: and his disciples came to him for to show him the buildings of the temple. And Jesus said unto them, “See ye not all these things? Verily I say unto you, there shall not be left here one stone upon another that shall not be thrown down.” And as he sat upon the Mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately saying,” Tell us, when shall these things be and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?”; “Because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold, but he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in the entire world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come." (St. Matthew 24:1-3 & 12-14)

Paul says in (Rom. 11:22) Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off. You had better continue in God’s goodness or you will be cut off. This is also the writing of thee Apostle Paul. You must continue to keep God’s laws (Commandments) if you expect to receive salvation.

‭‭Romans‬ ‭8‬:‭38‬-‭39‬ ‭NASB1995‬‬
I agree, but the Lord had the prophet Samuel to write, "And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry.” (1 Samuel 15: 22-23)

"Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it is good or evil". (Ecclesiastes 12: 13-14) “And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.” Blessed are they that do his commandments that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.

Didn't Paul say in (Rom. 13:7-10) (v.7) Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour. (v.8) Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law. That’s the biblical definition of love, the keeping of God’s law. (v.9) For this, THOU SHALT NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, THOU SHALT NOT KILL, THOU SHALT NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS, THOU SHALT NOT COVET; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, THOU SHALT LOVE THY NEIGHBOUR AS THYSELF. (v.10) Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

And that is what God’s holy commandments are all about; the first four tells you how to love God and the last six tells you how to love your neighbor. If you love your God you will not do any thing to offend him, like having other gods before him. You will do as he says like remember the sabbath day to keep it holy on the seventh day of the week. If you love him you will obey him when he tells you not to eat certain meats etc… And the same goes for your fellow man, if you love your neighbor you wouldn’t steal from him, you wouldn’t kill him, you wouldn’t try and sleep with his wife and so on and so forth. (See exodus 20: 1-17)
