  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Dont hate me please. Lets examine this issue

How should Christians dress? The Bible said that women shouldn't adorn themselves with outward beauty. Isn't makeup, clothes, and arranging the hair fail8ng to obey this commandment? I imagine men can learn something here too about how to dress.

Do not let your adornment be merely outward—arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel 1 Peter 3:3

That's not a commandment forbidding women from doing those things. Peter is saying to be more than that, or not to rely on that. That the light of God should shine through brighter than personal appearance. To put God ahead of self.

Compare it to 1 Timothy chapter 2. The scripture doesn't use the word merely. It sounds like a command forbidding such things.

1 Timothy 2:; 9 in like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and [e]moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing, 10 but, which is proper for women professing godliness, with good works.

I take that as gaudy attire. Like wearing a sparkling evening gown and elaborate jewelry, like one would see celebrities wearing to the academy awards or whatever. A guy wearing a mostly unbuttoned silk shirt with a bunch of gold chains over across hairy chest would also be inappropriate.

I tend to interpret these scriptures together. They both say that arranging thr hair of not godliness. Why is that?

Paul specifies braided hair. And I'm pretty sure that means braided in a certain fashion that was associated with sleeze and or paganism. In both cases Paul is obviously talking about what's considered overly elaborate displays.

Are you not assuming here? The way I see it its any outward adornment of beauty that is wrong

The Christian attitude should be modesty over vanity.
Exactly. Vanity is wrong. We should dress in plain clothes. In my opinion. I believe outward adornment of beauty is wrong

No one wants to talk about this? Thats why I lost faith in the church.
Luckily, we do not have our faith in a "church " , but in Jesus Christ of Nazareth who did not condemn how people adorned themselves.
Be blessed.

Why must we be beautiful? The world is already full of lust.

1 John 2:15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. 17 And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.

Does beauty = lust?

In my opinion it does. People want to be adored for their beauty. Thats lust. And other people have lust in their heart when they see that beauty. I don't see how that serves the Lord. It serves the flesh

What of Esther? She was beautiful and caught the eye of the King. He then adorned her to magnify her beauty. As the new queen of Persia, Esther risked her life to approach King Ahasuerus and reveal her Jewish identity to stop a genocidal plot. Her courage and strategic timing transformed a day of intended slaughter into a victory celebrated as the Feast of Purim. She wasn't the only one:

AI Generated
- Judith is the most prominent figure who used her beauty as a strategic weapon for Israel's advantage. In the Book of Judith, she adorned herself specifically to captivate the Assyrian general Holofernes, eventually beheading him and saving her people from destruction. Her physical appearance was the primary "advantage" that allowed her access to the enemy camp.
-Abigail also used her "beautiful appearance" and wisdom to intervene when David intended to slaughter Nabal’s household. By presenting herself to David, she de-escalated his wrath and secured the safety of her people, later becoming David’s wife.
-Jael is not explicitly described as beautiful in Judges 4, she used her hospitality and feminine charm to lure the Canaanite commander Sisera into a false sense of security before killing him with a tent peg, securing a military victory for Israel.

Please dont be so quick to demonize beauty.

Blessings

Why do people want to live like old testament folks lived? The new testament i read doesn't teach me to have Solomon's wealth or have multiple wives like he did. My wealth is in heaven. It doesn't teach me to seduce people with beauty or to want others to adore my beauty. I've lost faith in church's and preachers in these last days. To me, Paul and Peter are teaching us not to adorn ourselves with beauty.

Sounds to me like you're obsessed over this one thing.

There might be a deeper anxiety towards beautiful women. Nothing anyone can do for you other than pray this angst be lifted from you.
