  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Cuba's communist regime is the reason that Cuba is in dire straits.

I know that may seem like the reason for the current crisis at hand but it is not. Cubans were not experiencing a total blockade that will certainly cause massive death starting with the children . A 90% reduction of fuel imports will collapse the society. Like I said, this is a ruthless way to force a regime change by suffocating its inhabitants.
It is purely hypocritical for the U.S. to strangle Cuba with a decades-old embargo while filling its own shelves with goods from Communist China. This double standard proves that Washington doesn't actually care about "opposing communism," but instead uses "dishonest scales" to bully a small neighbor while playing nice with a massive global power for profit.
Simply outrageous!

I have never understood why the US continued to punish Cuba after we re-established diplomatic & trade with Russia. It seemed to me that the expat Cuban community here had outsize influence.

Yes indeed. I am a first generation Cuban in the US and believe me there were major fights between my family here and my family in Cuba concerning the embargo especially between my mother and my aunt who was raised in communist Cuba.

What were the arguments on each side, succinctly?

Nothing hypocritical at all about bringing down a communist dictatorship.

a quick search

  • Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission — Said Rubio’s remarks were “very reassuring” and emphasized that the U.S. sees Europe as a “strong partner in the Alliance,” reassuring European officials worried about transatlantic ties.
  • Jean-Noël Barrot, French Foreign Minister — Welcomed Rubio’s appeal to shared heritage and stressed the importance of collective responses to global challenges, though he did not suggest it would change France’s policy direction.
  • Johann Wadephul, German Foreign Minister — Described the speech as expected and reaffirmed commitment to the rules-based international order, agreeing on the need to stick to shared global norms.
  • Wolfgang Ischinger, Chair of the Munich Security Conference (senior German diplomat) — Conference leaders and diplomats present reportedly found Rubio’s speech “reassuring” compared with more confrontational U.S. contributions at past conferences (e.g., Vice President J.D. Vance’s remarks in 2025). This was reflected in a round of applause and standing ovation from attendees.

Many European officials framed Rubio’s call for renewed U.S.–Europe cooperation as a message of reassurance, especially after recent strains over NATO commitments and foreign policy differences

What was the point of this "a quick search" that gives four, fairly tepid quotes of support?

For future reference:

If this administration says something that clearly is designed to build trust : Other people will begin to view America more favourably.

If this adminstation threatens, cajoles, berates, insults, or malignes other groups : These other groups (and their allies) will view America more poorly.

Not sure why this is surprising...or frankly, in need of its own thread. I remember a time when American diplomats, heads of state, or representatives' speeches were not each worthy of their own thread.

Is it just because so many of these speeches go so very poorly?

Well, I would guess so. Hey, on the other side, anti-MAGA speeches got standing ovations too, so there's that.
