  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted. (Ga 6:1)

Paul tells people "who are siritual" to restore others who have been overtaken in any trespass. Who are these spiritual people and how do they determine that they qualify? I was a bit surprised that there are so few Bible verses that contain the adjective πνευματικός (i.e., spiritual). Here are all the examples:

The New King James Version 26 results in 21 verses
Rom 1:11 - For I long to see you, that I may impart to you some spiritual gift, so that you may be established—
Rom 7:14 - For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am carnal, sold under sin.
Rom 15:27 - It pleased them indeed, and they are their debtors. For if the Gentiles have been partakers of their spiritual things, their duty is also to minister to them in material things.
1 Cor 2:13 - These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual.
1 Cor 2:15 - But he who is spiritual judges all things, yet he himself is rightly judged by no one.
1 Cor 3:1 - And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual people but as to carnal, as to babes in Christ.
1 Cor 9:11 - If we have sown spiritual things for you, is it a great thing if we reap your material things?
1 Cor 10:3 - all ate the same spiritual food,
1 Cor 10:4 - and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ.
1 Cor 12:1 - Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant:
1 Cor 14:1 - Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.
1 Cor 14:37 - If anyone thinks himself to be a prophet or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things which I write to you are the commandments of the Lord.
1 Cor 15:44 - It is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body.
1 Cor 15:46 - However, the spiritual is not first, but the natural, and afterward the spiritual.
Gal 6:11 - Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted.
Eph 1:3 - Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ,
Eph 5:19 - speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord,
Eph 6:12 - For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.
Col 1:9 - For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;
Col 3:16 - Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
1 Pet 2:5 - you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

And I ;like all except 1 Peter 2:5. he is not writing to the BODY of Christ. and other than that , the best to you

as the bible was all written. to all. of US. as many take many verses OUT OF CONTEXT. !!

When a brother or sister has gotten themselves in a bind--going down the wrong path, the rest of the Church responds by guiding, correcting, teaching--calling them back to restoration and communion by being kind, gentle (not harsh, and cruel).

The contrast is spiritual with carnal, those who are following their appetites rather than being faithful. Because the Holy Spirit doesn't lead us down the wrong path, but calls us to and keeps us in true faith.

I would argue that, quite frequently, when Paul uses pneumatikos this is to be understood as connected to the Holy Spirit.

Here is Louw-Nida's only entry for πνευματικός...

12.20 πνευματικός, οῦ m: (derivative of πνεῦμαa ‘Spirit,’ 12.18) one who has received God’s Spirit and presumably lives in accordance with this relationship—‘one who is spiritual, one who has received the Spirit.’ πνευματικοῖς πνευματικὰ συγκρίνοντες ‘explaining spiritual truths to those who possess the Spirit’ 1 Cor 2:13. In a number of languages it is not possible to speak of ‘possessing the Spirit,’ but one can often say ‘to be possessed by the Spirit’ or ‘those whom the Spirit possesses’ or ‘… owns’ or ‘… controls.’ [Louw, J. P., & Nida, E. A. (1996). In Greek-English lexicon of the New Testament: based on semantic domains (electronic ed. of the 2nd edition., Vol. 1, p. 142). United Bible Societies.]

I do not know why they used the word presumably. That word expresses uncertainty about the declaration that follows, meaning that they are guessing to some degree that the word itself implies that a spiritual person "lives in accordance with this relationship". Why put that word in there?
