  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Here is just a few years ago - when the politicians applauded them and called them elite
The question is not about their "elititivity". It is about using an anti-terror unit on crowds and protestors. From the sources I could see, some were fine with their continued existence, but wanted to eliminate certain types of deployments.

Thank you for your observation and opinion - we differ.

One central concern is preparedness. Terrorism response requires specialized training in areas such as coordinated attack protocols, intelligence sharing, hazardous materials handling, and crisis command structures. While general patrol officers are trained to respond to emergencies, a dedicated unit often develops advanced expertise through scenario-based exercises and interagency drills. Without such a team, critics worry that response times could slow and coordination gaps could emerge during a major incident.

Another issue involves deterrence. The existence of a visible, well-trained counterterrorism unit can serve as a psychological and strategic deterrent. Disbanding it may be perceived—rightly or wrongly—as a signal that counterterrorism is no longer a top municipal priority. In an era where threats can evolve quickly and unpredictably, some residents fear that symbolic and practical readiness both matter. Critics caution that relying solely on outside agencies could create dangerous delays during the critical first moments of a crisis.

my notes made clearer by AI
I can't speak to NY but up until recently I was heavily involved in the security preparations for the games in Seattle. I do know that federal agencies are helping to train and coordinate not only counter terrorism, but multiple different emergency scenarios in preparation. I also know that the training involves multiple different departments that would need to coordinate such as IT, fire, police, transportation, emergency operations, and medical first responders.

I think the key take away is each municipality is creating it's own internal plan but it is all being directed and information disseminated from the federal agencies who are working with each city / state.
