The german politicians who stood up (Foreign Minister Wadephul, Defense minister Pistorius and bavarian minister president Söder) are claiming that the standing ovation was pure politeness and not a sign of enthusiastic agreement.

Personally, I think it's a pathetic display, and thus fits well with the german government and especially our chancellor Merz, who is willing to turn his coat at a moments notice and kick anyone else off the ladder if it means he can get a bit further up.

As for the speech, Rubio might have been more polite, but he was no less hostile, and the fact that he then continued on to butter up the most right-wing, russia-friendly governments of the EU says it all. This is just divide and conquer, and our leaders are falling over each other in the attempt to end up on the side of the division that gets the carrot and not the stick.
