  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The advantage to meeting in person is the obvious one, that you get to be around other people.

I've encountered two advantages to online study groups. 1) As you mention, it's nice for people who have long commutes, or who don't drive at night, or who have mobility issues, or who have young children that they need to stay at home and care for. 2) A couple of years ago, I experienced one Bible study group that was conducted asynchronously, via Discord. We read through the Bible together in a year, with assigned readings for each day. We could do the reading at any time of day that worked for us, and we'd post our reflections to the Discord whenever those thoughts occurred to us throughout the day. I liked it because I wasn't limited to what I could think of in real time; I could reflect on a reading for an hour and then write down my thoughts when they came together.

I've seen all three kinds of study groups work well (in-person, online synchronous, online asynchronous). In all of these settings, it's important to have some way that you're interacting with the other people, so that it's not just watching TV.

What are the pros and cons to each.

Especially for those in remote locations, what are they missing if they don't go to a Bible study in person. I do like to be around people, so I will be missing that.
The tendency can be that some in the group do not participate when in an online format as compared to the same person in an in person meeting. But online bible study for someone who can only attend remote is wayyyy better than no meeting or simply getting a text summary of the meeting , or getting a video recording of the meeting with no chance to interact
