  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Trump Voter Tells President to ‘Hurry Up’ on the Economy Because ‘We Can’t Stand This’

On Friday’s edition of Erin Burnett OutFront, CNN’s Jeff Zeleny spoke with Franz Rowland, a farmer in Southern Georgia who voted for President Donald Trump in 2024, as he urged the president to “hurry up” on aiding the economy because “we can’t stand this much.”

“I don’t know who dropped the ball in Washington to allow these prices, this trade, to diminish like it has,” said the 72-year-old Rowland, “but somebody dropped the ball. Somebody wasn’t looking out for us.”

“Trump says, you know, ‘Be patient. The farmers are gonna be better than ever,'” he continued. “Well, you’d better hurry up. Because we can’t, we can’t stand this much.”

When asked how it feels to hear politicians in Washington claiming that the country has never been better, Rowland was blunt. “They need to come out here and live in my shoes. The economy may be doing better for some people, but on the farm, it ain’t doing better.”
I remember that Solzhenitsyn shared about people in the gulags writing to Uncle Joe Stalin about their plight, not knowing that it was the “Man of Steel” who had had them sent there.

This is that.

The impact on farmers Trump tariffs 2018:
"The retaliatory tariffs led to a significant reduction in U.S. agricultural exports to retaliating partners. Nationally, direct U.S. agricultural export losses due to retaliatory tariffs totaled more than $27 billion during 2018 through the end of 2019. Across retaliatory partners, China accounted for approximately 95 percent of the losses ($25.7 billion), followed by the EU ($0.6 billion), and Mexico ($0.5 billion), with Canada, Turkey, and India having smaller shares. We estimated annualized losses for selected commodities from retaliatory tariffs were $13.2 billion from mid-2018 to the end of 2019" --USDA
Again, recall that US farmers had to be bailed out first trade war. Now this trade war Trump's wishy-washy this month, next month, never mind, maybe tomorrow pledge to double down, along with essentialsaltes notation of farmers being hosed by DOGE, why in the world would anyone think this a good thing. I know the excuses here is Trump is just using this for negotiation leverage to fix his "beautiful" USMCA trade agreement, but it's not about that. It's not about fentanyl. It's about Trump not understanding trade period. The 27B of loses in one year 2018-19, is going to be nothing compared to the hurt this go around.
A continuum of the first term agricultural losses in one year flat. There was $27 billion during 2018 through the end of 2019. The losses in just this one year of 2025 has doubled from the 2018-19 to $44 Billion in 2025. What's the definition of insanity of doing the same thing over again and expecting a different result? And btw, speaking of doing the same thing over again. Trump induced farming losses causing another farmer bailout checks haven't to my knowledge have been issued. And another btw, US farm economy shows widening cracks as costs rise, jobs vanish

Fuming famers say Trump’s new trade deal is a losing gamble

This month, President Donald Trump announced the United States would temporarily increase the amount of beef the nation imports from Argentina — by 80,000 more metric tons this calendar year. [It would be tariff-free]

Javier Milei, the far-right Argentinian president, spoke highly of the trade deal, saying it signaled the nation’s trustworthiness as a trade partner.

“The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association and its members cannot stand behind the president while he undercuts the future of family farmers and ranchers by importing Argentinian beef in an attempt to influence prices,” Colin Woodall, head of the trade group, said in a statement. Deb Fischer, a Republican senator from Nebraska, also stated that the trade deal will “sideline” cattle ranchers in the U.S.

Trade groups, lawmakers, and economists agree that the increased imports from Argentina are unlikely to lower the record-high beef prices in the U.S. [but it does poke farmers in the eye]
