  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

TECHNIQUES DETECTED

Characterizes immigrants as inherently dangerous

Uses selective reporting to amplify threat perception

Introduces editorial commentary disguised as news analysis

VIRAL TRIGGERS

Confirms pre-existing immigration fears

Provides 'insider' perspective on controversial event

Offers emotional validation for anti-immigration stance
Meh on RAGECHECK, Southern Poverty Law Center got “25” for being “emotional”; imagine people being emotional over the continued (alleged) violations of their civili liberties; where will it end!?

Under 33 gets a green light from them. I'm not sold on it either, but I think it's interesting and does not seem to be particularly biased. I fed it some leftwing bait from Mother Jones and Salon and (correctly IMO) got some orange and red results.

Videos add new detail to 2nd Minneapolis ICE shooting in a week

‘As we were closing the door they shot him,’ a woman tells 911 in a livestream

“While Sosa-Celis and law enforcement were in a struggle on the ground, two subjects came out of a nearby apartment and attacked the law enforcement officer with a snow shovel and broom handle,” the official federal statement said. The statement goes on to say that Sosa-Celis then began striking an officer with a shovel or broom stick.

According to the DHS statement, the officer, fearing for his life and safety, then “fired a defensive shot to defend his life,” after which the three men ran into the house.

The Washington Post interviewed Sosa-Celis’s mother, Alicia Celis, who said her son told her that the man who was pursued by federal agents was actually Sosa-Celis’s friend, one of the three men arrested.

Facebook livestream of 911 call and observer video

According to Celis, Sosa-Celis opened the door to let his friend inside, and as Sosa-Celis went to close the door, an ICE officer shot him in the leg, reported the Post.

A Facebook livestream video, which appears to show the moments after the man was shot from the perspective of his wife and other people inside the house, partly lines up with Sosa-Celis’s account. The video was published by an account by the name of Lachamaka Mendoza and is timestamped to Wednesday 6:51 p.m., the exact time Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said local police started receiving 911 calls about the shooting.

In the video, at least five people, including one small child, are in a house while law enforcement lights flash outside. They speak on the phone in Spanish to what sounds like a 911 operator, saying that someone has been shot in the leg by “guys from ICE.”

“Please help, we have kids,” one person said.

A woman then tells the operator: “It was ICE, they were chasing my husband for like half an hour and they were trying to crash into him. He got to the house and as we were closing the door they shot him.”

Another woman adds: “Tell them that they shot the door.” It is not clear from the video whether she meant that the agents shot through the doorway or at a door.

The 911 call suggests that the agent shot at the man as he was trying to escape into the house, which would contradict the Department of Homeland Security account that the federal immigration agent fired a shot defensively.

ICE unironically employing the Uncle Jimbo defense. "Bah gawd, he's comin' right for us!"

This example from the New York Times is typical establishment journalism.
This example from DHS is typical ICE agent testimony.

ICE says 2 of its officers may have lied under oath about shooting migrant in Minnesota

"Today, a joint review by ICE and the Department of Justice (DOJ) of video evidence has revealed that sworn testimony provided by two separate officers appears to have made untruthful statements," Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons said in a statement.

The statement from Lyons comes a day after the top federal prosecutor in Minnesota asked a judge to dismiss charges against two men, including one who was shot in the leg by an immigration agent, citing "newly discovered evidence" in what was initially framed as a "violent" attack on law enforcement during an enforcement operation.

"Newly discovered evidence in this matter is materially inconsistent with the allegations in the complaint affidavit. ... as well as the preliminary-hearing testimony," U.S. Attorney for the District of Minnesota Daniel Rosen wrote in the filing Wednesday evening. [The judge dismissed the charges.]

The reversal on the assault charges for Sosa-Celis and Aljorna comes after several discrepancies emerged between statements from Department of Homeland Security officials and details outlined in court records regarding their arrests.

"What we saw last night in Minneapolis was an attempted murder of federal law enforcement," DHS Secretary Kristi Noem said in the Jan. 15 statement.

NYT 'framing' seems pretty accurate:
