And the current shortages of food and medical supplies?Rolling blackouts are nothing new in Cuba.
Also for quite sometime. What you are seeing in Cuba is the logical ending to communism. The same food shortages and misery happened with the fall of the Soviet Union in the late eighties. And the current shortages of food and medical supplies?
You don't believe that the current US policy is making the situation even worse? It isn't making things any better, is it?Also for quite sometime. What you are seeing in Cuba is the logical ending to communism. The same food shortages and misery happened with the fall of the Soviet Union in the late eighties.
The sad part is that even the tourism industry is falling dramatically because of the shortages and rolling blackouts outs so they are going from bad to worse. I was born in Cuba but immigrated to the states in the early sixties with my parents. I don’t personally know anyone living there but my mother and aunt do so we get current conditions.
It is making it worse but they’re communists and deserve it.You don't believe that the current US policy is making the situation even worse? It isn't making things any better, is it?
I do believe that the US is making it worse and there could be much more than the US could do to help the people there. But I can’t blame the US for causing their situation. You don't believe that the current US policy is making the situation even worse? It isn't making things any better, is it?
Communism is self defeating. It is making it worse but they’re communists and deserve it.
Apparently.
Nonsense. The logical end to communism is when the governments rapes the resources of the country to the point that there is nothing left. The major problems in Cuba are the results of years of negligence, reliance on other equally horrible countries, and controlling the people by force and threats. The logical end point of communism is that the USA will try their level best to destroy you.
For an example of how communism looks like when the USA doesn't care about you after their attempt failed, take a look at Vietnam. It's actually doing fine, at least when it comes to economy and standard of living.
Explain the economic state of Vietnam, then. It's communist, so why aren't they suffering a permanent economic crisis?Nonsense. The logical end to communism is when the governments rapes the resources of the country to the point that there is nothing left. The major problems in Cuba are the results of years of negligence, reliance on other equally horrible countries, and controlling the people by force and threats.
Vietnam transitioned to a market economy called socially oriented market economy. The government embraced market-driven reforms since the 1980s. It is one of the world's fastest-growing economies. They are basically a hybrid of authoritarian rule with significant capitalistic elements. This is something that the Castro regime in Cuba did not do and when they tried a version of it after the elder Castro died it was too late.Explain the economic state of Vietnam, then. It's communist, so why aren't they suffering a permanent economic crisis?
Communism is self defeating.
That’s a good argument. It is possible that if the US would have lifted the embargo back in the 60’s that maybe it would have turned up differently. In fact, if Kennedy would have received Castro as a head of state maybe Castro would not have asked the USSR for help and communism never would have taken hold. Lots of ifs though.Of course.
...but somehow, the Cuba regime has held on for 60+ years....in part due to other states propping up it's economy and in part due to the policies of the United States. Had we removed our economic embargo decades ago, I think the regime would have followed. As you noted, the Cuban regime was not willing to adopt elements of capitalism (China, Viet Nam, etc).
