  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Has anyone ever requested the Pope designate a church a basilica?

I'm curious, I've never heard of that happening so I assume no. But just for the hay of it I kind of want to write His Holiness and ask if he'd designate my parish a basilica. Assuming it wouldn't be impertinent to do so or completely misunderstanding procedure.

My diocese doesn't have a basilica, and I'm hugely biased, but I think my parish is pretty special. The community's been around since the late 19th century and the church itself was built in 1908. Nothing extraordinary in historical terms but I think it stands out in all sorts of ways, it seems to defy the norm of a novus ordo parish that's dying. As long as I've been there it's been thriving and growing, we regularly confirm about 30 converts a year, which is not bad for a region of the state that's very protestant. I dunno, I just think every aspect of the parish is doing so well and it deserves that kind of status.

I used to think basilica status was only given to cathedral-sized churches but after Pope Francis designated Mission San Buenaventura a basilica I thought maybe that wasn't the case. Though that might've just been for the historical significance more than anything else.

Can’t hurt to write. But if you get any sort of reply, I want to hear about it!

I did a little googling, which I should've done in the first place, and according to google the bishop petitions the Dicastery for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments... maybe I'll write him and just see what he says.
