  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

HOW TO PROGRESS FROM DEBATE TO DIALOGUE USING THE SOCRATIC METHOD

Formulating good questions is not always easy. And if the other person is not rational, there is no point. But then we are wasting our time anyway. But I think it good practice to listen and ask.

I don't like the "socratic method" because it basically just assumes that there is a correct answer and everyone already knows that correct answer, you just have to guide them towards it with leading questions. In reality, people will not just change their viewpoints when you point out logical inconsistencies, they are more likely to double down because of cognitive dissonance. Chalking this up to dishonest debating is in itself dishonest because everyone is prone to such faulty thinking.

It's also very lopsided in it's approach, since if one uses the socratic method, they just interact with the other person's viewpoints without putting their own thoughts "out there" to criticise and correct.

This might be an okay approach for a teacher-student setting or something both sides are completely dispassionate about, but it neither makes for fair, fruitful nor engaging debates.

I don’t think it assumes a correct answer but it is lopsided. Of course nine of us are probably much practiced in it. We shift right to poor argument.

I love the Socratic method. I just ask people ‘what are your thoughts on x’, sit back and listen sagaciously.
