  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Are on line examinations even feasible now given AI is now better than average students and can be used for cheating.

In another thread Can AI teach me cosmology at applied maths undergraduate level or even post grad?, ChatGpt-5's knowledge of cosmology was assessed at a tertiary level.

In the following video the Professor Phil Moriarty puts ChatGPT-5 to the test with a second year physics exam on quantum mechanics which it passes with flying colours and outperformed most students.
In Australia and the UK on line university examinations have become quite common where AI can be used as a cheating tool.

Never thought they were a good idea in the first place.

My spouse finds it easy to differentiate the essays written by hand in the classroom from the 'take-home' essays and paper. If education is to mean something other than AI prompting skills, we'll need to move to more offline in-person and monitored tests.

To me, I don't feel like the problem is AI coming up with the answers to an exam. I think any student with decent google skills could do the same. What really needs to be evaluated is the information that an AI generated curriculum would include. AI can't really discern good information from bad. An exclusively AI generated curriculum would likely include controversial ideas that might be rejected by the scientific consensus but are presented as valid or it might include completely false information. Worse yet, it might include hallucinations.

I took a quantum mechanics solution from an applied mathematics textbook changed a few minus signs to plus signs including some mathematical logical connectives which totally changed the logical structure of the solution.
ChatGPT-5 found the minor errors but completely missed out on the altered logical structure until it was prompted to check the logical connectives.

Interesting it states as a physics solution it is correct as an applied mathematics solution it definitely isn't.
As a language model AI is still vulnerable to making logical errors in the mathematics which are detectable.

On a different topic is AI now starting to solve age old mathematical problems or as a language model rediscovering old proofs?
Sabine Hossenfelder has an opinion on the matter.

Your description comes across as Sabine being the female version of Max Headroom.

shudder~~~~~

Something just feels off about the last couple videos I have seen linked from her. It is as if she has made an AI version of herself...
