  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Joshua Harris has been thinking about Jesus again. Harris, who became famous for his 1997 book “I Kissed Dating Goodbye” and who later publicly left the Christian faith, said in a recent Instagram post that President Donald Trump was partially responsible for Harris rejecting Christianity. But now it is because of Trump that Harris’ thoughts have turned again to Jesus.

“I don’t know how to say this. And it probably won’t make sense,” Harris said at the beginning of his Instagram post. “But it feels like President Trump is leading me back to Jesus.”

Harris began and ended his post with the cover of Christian music artist Keith Green’s album “No Compromise.” The cover depicts Mordecai from the Book of Esther refusing to bow to Haman amid a crowd of other people who are all bowing. One person with a fearful expression next to Mordecai is trying to get him to bow as well.

“Growing up, I thought standing up to power was something that happened somewhere else, under dictators in distant countries or in some dark era of centuries past,” Harris said in the caption. “In these troubling days, I’m asking where the courage to stand up to kings actually comes from. I find myself turning back to the stories that shaped my earliest understanding of power and courage.”

i think this guy is as confused as in The Vanishing of Sidney Hall.

I never read his first book but my mom gave it to my brother and he laughed at it a lot. book came up at a party and a young woman said to me "be careful with that book, it has destroyed lives"

It’s very unrealistic. I was shocked when I have seen people here actually recommend it.

i assume you're talking about his book i kissed dating goodbye?

or the film?

my wife couldn't watch part of the vanishing.. when the absolutely brain dead mom throws the vhs tape in the fire. i predicted she was going to do it and started laughing...

my wife asks "is this film about you?"

i'm like.. well, there was a vhs tape my mom found and she asked us to destroy it. i didn't even think to wonder what was on it...

“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?”
‭‭Jeremiah‬ ‭17‬:‭9‬ ‭KJV‬‬

It sounds like his faith is subject to the winds of his feelings. We cannot make decisions based off our emotions; they will betray us. They are but reflections of our heart; our thoughts control how we feel. What we think will directly influence what we feel, & if we only stop to question our emotions, not our thoughts - we will surely make the wrong decision; we fall into lies. True faith is more than a measurement, it is your object.

“And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭17‬:‭20‬ ‭KJV‬‬

The smallest faith in the right object accomplishes more than the greatest faith in the wrong object; the smallest faith, when placed in the living God, is all the strength you’ll ever need. And You don’t need to “feel more faith.” You need to look more steadily at Christ. Faith grows not by introspection but by beholding.

So what do we do as brothers & sisters in Christ? We pray for him. Just as Jesus did. May the Lord deliver wisdom & understanding; Godspeed.

“but I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.”
‭‭Luke‬ ‭22‬:‭32‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Probably looking for another money grab.
He may feel inspired to write another book. Anyway, snarky jokes aside, God can work anyway He wants to draw someone back to Him.

I'm not joking. I'm serious. Just my opinion.

It is not my place to make a judgement on speculation on the origins of his faith.

Do you think God inspires people to do things that result in collateral damage to others?

God can take crooked paths and make them straight again. And reflect His mercy through it. God does not inspire people to do things that result in collateral damage. That is what sin does. You have it backwards.

The Lord has given you the wisdom to help brother; his symptoms are the same regardless of the root.

“But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person.”

what did i have backwards?

its your posts that appear to hint at God leading people down false paths so he can bring them back again.
Your question insinuated that you thought God inspired people to do things that resulted in collateral damage. It was a question yes but God is the healer in those situations not the cause. Sorry if you or I misunderstood each other.

Thanks for posting the article about Harris @Michie :oldthumbsup: I've never read anything by Joshua Harris, except for his recounting of a dream that he had in a short story called, The Room (which I found to be very moving).

As a result, I've always read articles about Harris whenever I've seen them, and I was not surprised to read that he became a fairly well-known and influential voice in Christianity (as a youth pastor, public speaker and author). Of course, I was then both saddened and somewhat shocked to read about him leaving Christianity and divorcing his wife about 10 years ago.

So, I agree with @iHarken, that Harris was/is (hopefully) someone who simply never grew to maturity in the faith and, as a result, was/is still being tossed about here and there by his life's emotions and experiences (Ephesians 4:14), rather than knowing, understanding and walking in the truth, and trusting/hoping then in our precious Savior, alone.

It seems that he is someone who we should pray for, yes, especially since it is also possible that he has never come to true, saving faith in the Lord Jesus Christ (e.g. Matthew 7:22-23; Ephesians 4:17-19).

God bless you!!

--David
p.s. - here's a larger part of the incredible passage in Ephesians that I took the verse and passage from above, in case anyone would like to read it all, in context. I love Ephesians :)

Ephesians 4
11 He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers,
12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ;
13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ.
14 As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming;
15 but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ,
16 from whom the whole body, being fitted and held together by what every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love.
17 So this I say, and affirm together with the Lord, that you walk no longer just as the Gentiles also walk, in the futility of their mind,
18 being darkened in their understanding, excluded from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardness of their heart;
19 and they, having become callous, have given themselves over to sensuality for the practice of every kind of impurity with greediness.
20 But you did not learn Christ in this way,
21 if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught in Him, just as truth is in Jesus,
22 that, in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit,
23 and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind,
24 and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth.
25 Therefore, laying aside falsehood, SPEAK TRUTH EACH ONE of you WITH HIS NEIGHBOR, for we are members of one another.
26 BE ANGRY, AND yet DO NOT SIN; do not let the sun go down on your anger,
27 and do not give the devil an opportunity.

I remember when his book about dating came out, not sure if I read it, possibly , that was so many years ago. I am shocked and saddened to hear he turned away from God! I always think when this happens they didn't know Jesus (God) in the first place.
