  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I knew it would eventually get to this. It doesn't matter though, because it's just a pretext to harass the people they don't want here. They aren't accepting drivers licenses or birth certificates as ID. They are telling people their passports are fake. They apparently don't have a way of confirming citizenship anyway without detaining people for a week.

I no longer have a passport and my birth certificate is kept in a fireproof box at home so I dont lose it. My birth hospital didn't use hand or foot prints so even with that, there's no way to prove I'm me.

I've said for years that the hate in the hearts of some Americans and some Christians would lead to all the things we were warned to fear, including the mark of the beast. If the government were to say starting tomorrow, all Americans have to have a mark/microchip to work, buy or sell so that only REAL AMERICANS can live and work here, they'd be lined up first thing.

They love hating others more than they love freedom or themselves. Welp. America had a good run while it lasted.
Yes I agree, and if this were a Democratic administration, Obama or Biden, the talking heads on conservative cable news hair would be on fire. Remember the proposed vaccine passports(which I opposed myself as a conservative.) My birth certificate is also in a locked fireproof safe, I don't have a passport but I've been thinking of getting one. I do have an enhanced ID which required me showing my birth certificate and marriage certificate but I've been told that's not proof of citizenship. Since I look white, maybe I won't be questioned-for now. And don't me wrong, I agree with getting the criminals out but that could have been done with more of a surgical approach.

Yeah, a lot of white people are comfortable that, "They'll never come for me."

The Trump administration is counting on you all maintaining that attitude.
You can't beat deported either... And you know it.

When you get your passport, I strongly advise you to get a passport card at the same time. That way, when it becomes necessary to have actual proof of American birth in your wallet, you can have the card instead of carrying your passport.

You can get the card later, but that requires mailing in your passport with a 6- to 8-week (at best) return. Get it at the same time as your passport.

A. I don't know it. As the law has been traditionally interpreted, I shouldn't be. But the Trump Administration's interpretation of laws is not traditional.

B. Even if I'm not deported, that doesn't mean I can't be targeted as a "potential criminal...look at the statistics for his race!"

Also, we live in a neighborhood surrounded by Latinos, and my wife and daughter have been visually mistaken for Latinos more than once.

I got both at the same time, they had a discount for getting both and I figured why not.

If police have probable cause [Constitution] they can demand that you produce ID. They can't just demand people on the street identify themselves.
Their primary objective has to do with when, where and how they can extort money to stuff in their pockets. It is against the law to keep track on paper how much money they bring in, but they know.

My son is asian and it is very common for people to think he is Latino or black. In fact no one has ever guessed that he is asian. (South Pacific).

People waver between Asian and Latino for my son.

I saw an Asian guy who caught me staring at him because he did resemble my son a great deal.

FYI - My wife's passport was renewed (via USPS mail) within 3 weeks in late December (standard renewal, not expedited). I was pleasantly surprised. She didn't do the passport card, but we are now thinking of doing that too.

I actually got my passport card when I renewed my passport finally specifically so I had a easily carried proof of citizenship. It also has the benefit of not having my address on it, so I can use it when being carded without spreading where I live around.

If only a Lutheran pastor wrote a really famous poem about the naivete' of that sentiment.

As the descendant of immigrants (all non-indigenous people are, but apparently some of us forget that), here's a fun Irish language lesson that I feel is fitting as it pertains to Kristi Noem and her jack-booted thugs:

Póg mo thóin - pronounced pohg muh hoin

This image was, few years ago, posted by a far-right group, complaining that hospitals were requiring staff to show that they had been vaccinated for COVID-19. Now they seem to think that it's perfectly O.K. to stop people on the street to get their ID.

Supreme Court has ruled that ID can be demanded when there is reasonable, articulable suspicion that the individual has committed a crime, is about to commit a crime, or is committing a crime. Lower courts have ruled that being the wrong color does not amount to reasonable suspicion.

Out of tens of thousands who openly disagree with the current administration, so far, only two people have been willing to die for what they believe in. So while they boldly wear their keffiyehs around their necks, only the tiniest fraction of a single percent have the guts of those whom they seem to idolize. That's pathetic.

...Have a nice day. :)

I keep coming back to this post and trying to make sense of it. Are you saying that the protesters aren't really serious because only two of them have been shot so far in Minneapolis?

All citizens in North Korea, for example, are required to carry papers and to show them on demand.

Kristi Noem believes this practice should be followed in the United States.

Why not?

A sign of the times, digital age, carrying a valid ID kort is not a burden, the size of a bank card.

I do not think the police in the picture do it just to pass the time of day.

"A valid ID card" and "proof of citizenship" are not the same thing.

That's why RealID doesn't prove citizenship even now, and up until now it wasn't even necessary to show even that much unless suspected of breaking a law (still isn't, according to the Supreme Court, but ICE clearly doesn't care about the court system).

It was never thought before that it would be necessary in the US even to prove identification, much less citizenship, simply upon demand.
