  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Question, can angels see the future?

According to Catholic teaching, angels are spiritual beings with intellect and will, which means they know things directly, not through experience like humans do. Because of this, they can understand the natural order of causes and effects, and from that they can often predict what will happen in the future. In other words, they can “see” future events that follow logically from the current state of the world.

However, angels cannot know the choices that people will freely make on their own, because humans truly have free will. They may be able to make very accurate predictions, but a decision that is genuinely free cannot be known in advance unless God reveals it to them. Only God possesses complete and infallible knowledge of the future.

So in short: angels can see much of the future as a realm of possibilities and consequences, and they can know certain events if God allows it, but their knowledge is not the same as God’s perfect foreknowledge.

Alright, I got my answer. Thank you.

According to Catholic exorcists, the devil and demons cannot see the future. They have the same constraints as the angels.

When it is all said and done, demons are just fallen angels, so both would be subject to the same limits on their abilities.

The difference is in how they use their "talents".

Angels aren't omniscient like God, but I think if God can reveal the future to his human prophets then the angels are likely to experience the same thing if God wills it, likely to greater effect as well. I imagine it's similar to how we understand the Saints hear our prayers because of their proximity to God's throne.

Did the angels knew about the incarnation beforehand? Because some traditions say they didn't.

As I asked the other...

As far as the incarnation, yes I believe they knew. I often think of their knowledge during creation as well.

This article might be of some help to you.

I ask because multiple early Christians said angels were surprised at the Incarnation. The whole "mystery" of the Incarnation.

"Seen of Angels" (1 Timothy 3:16): This scripture is often cited by the Fathers to indicate that the angels witnessed the Incarnation and were actively involved in it—announcing it to Mary, Joseph, and the shepherds, and serving Jesus after his temptations.

Saint Gabriel did because he announced it. I'm not so sure there's secrets in heaven so the heavenly host possibly knew, they're also participating in the divine relationship so they probably knew the second person of the trinity was condescending from heaven to be incarnate and save the world.
