Mamdani signals disbanding NYPD protest unit,

"Yes, I continue to believe that we need to disband the SRG, and I'm currently in conversations with the police commissioner about the ways in which we can do so that are operational, and I believe that we should do so not on the basis of any fiscal need, but frankly, on the need to decouple the counterterrorism responsibilities within the department from police response to First Amendment exercise," Mamdani told a reporter on Wednesday when asked about the matter.

The NYPD said on its website that the SRG "responds to citywide mobilizations, civil disorders, and major events with highly trained personnel and specialized equipment" and has "proven to be a critical asset during events like parades, protests, and the papal visit."

A city that has seen and still sees its fair share of chaos and attacks - the mayor want to disband a group that is highly trained and has proven to be a critical asset.

Socialism isn't spectacular or succeeding in the scheme of things.
Socialism, for all its popularity in some circles, is not a Biblical model for society.

SRG is used for large-scale events, such as the G20 summit, terrorist threats, and even G Floyd, with crowd management and riot control. I'll hide and watch and see if he can make it work.

Hmm, how did NYC get there? A lot of businesses are moving because of tax fatigue, which will make it harder economically if he wants to reduce the deficit.

The long and short of it is thought that the Mayor is trying to find expenditures that could be seen as “waste“; I’m sure negotiations will continue as politics is harder than having a strong leader simply make declarations over “now it will be”.
