  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hey always.

I believe that Paul clearly stressed that the primary use of foreign languages, or tongues, as they said in sixteenth century England (KJV 1611), was for a sign of judgment on unbelieving Israel. Any secondary benefits were to keep it orderly and edifying. Without the sign, it's very clear that we can do all those secondary things better, and more efficient, and with less difficulty and confusion in our normal tongues. For me it's English. That's the tongue that I speaketh in.

Dave
Hey Dave,

clearly not in the verses quoted.

Also, how does your pov define:

1 Cor 14:4 4 He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself,

or

1 Cor 14:
What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding. I will singwith the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding.

Hey Always.

The verse that you quoted is not a command, or a positive teaching as many read into it these days. Rather, it's a statement of fact that is a 'what not to do' when contrasted with the 'what to do'.. That's why it is contrasted with a "but", when comparing prophecy with tongues. Prophecy is preferred. That doesn't carry the idea of new revelation, btw.

Edification is the goal. That's clear. It's a very simple thing being said here. Some things got lost in the translation, but the gist of it is still clear.

1 Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.

Now, which one passes the test, "A" or "B"?

A) 2 For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.
B) 3 *But* he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men.

Again, which one, A or B?

A) 4a He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself,
B) 4b *but* he who prophesies edifies the church.

14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful. (What not to do)
15 What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding. I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding. (what to do). the whole book goes like that.

The primary purpose of languages....

20-22 Brethren, do not be children in understanding; however, in malice be babes, but in understanding be mature. In the law it is written: "With men of other tongues and other lips I will speak to this people; And yet, for all that, they will not hear Me," says the Lord. Therefore tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers; but prophesying is not for unbelievers but for those who believe.

Everything being taught by Paul back then to the church of Corinth is to keep the the sign gift Biblical while the sign is still applicable and operating in the church. When the sign is no longer needed, then the secondary benefits go with it. Prophesy is all we need today. That's not revelatory these days. Speaking before is not speaking of time, rather, it's means speaking before men. Proclaiming Biblical truth. The Word of God.

37-40 If anyone thinks himself to be a prophet or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things which I write to you are the commandments of the Lord. But if anyone is ignorant, let him be ignorant. Therefore, brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and do not forbid to speak with tongues. Let all things be done decently and in order.

A.D. 70. That to which the sign pointed happened. The Gentiles are grafted in. It's just foreign languages. It was Babel being reversed.

We can go over the rest of the chapter if you like.

It's important to understand the history of it in the Old Testament to know what is actually happening in Corinth when Paul speaks about it, both encouraging, and rebuking.

Tongues is just a sixteenth century word for languages. I think that some people like the term 'tongues' because it giveth them a magic hocus pocus feeling. It just means languages. No need for the sign anymore. It's primary purpose has went and gone. The secondary uses that were necessary to keep it Biblical went with it. One of the main reasons tongues were spoken at Pentecost pointed towards A.D 70. as was noted in the link provided, God's judgment on Israel. Tongues were also spoken to show by way of miracle that God's "Promise of the Father" that was owed to OT saints was being given, the NT indwelling that all Christians receive the moment Jesus places the Holy Spirit in them, called the baptism with the Holy Spirit. It also showed that God was undoing the confusion of languages that He caused way back in Babylon to evangelize the whole world. The Gentiles were now grafted in per Romans 11:17-24 to provoke Israel to jealousy. Please at least glance over the link provided if you're going to respond. Thanks.
