Ice is already fully funded.
The appropriations have already been passed into law and now the Democrats once again want to shut down the government to renegotiate something already passed - how did that work out for them last time?
‘Enough Is Enough’: Democrats Threaten Shutdown Over ICE Funding
Senate Democrats said they would block a funding bill that includes tens of billions for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) after federal agents fatally shot another person in Minneapolis on Saturday, a move that looks likely to cause a partial government shutdown at the end of the week.
Do they not know:- A 2025 reconciliation law called the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (sometimes just called the “Big Beautiful Bill”) was signed into law and included massive new funding for immigration enforcement, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
- Under that law, ICE’s funding was expanded far beyond its traditional ~$10 billion annual budget — the statute increases ICE’s total funding to more than $100 billion by 2029, making it one of the most funded federal law-enforcement agencies in the U.S. government.
- In its current form, the DHS appropriations measure provides annual appropriations for ICE’s detention and enforcement activities, among other homeland security operations.
- Separate reform proposals (e.g., the Melt ICE Act) have also been introduced by some members, aiming to restrict or redirect ICE funding — but those are stand-alone proposals and not part of the main appropriations bill.
