In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

‘Enough Is Enough’: Democrats Threaten Shutdown Over ICE Funding

Senate Democrats said they would block a funding bill that includes tens of billions for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) after federal agents fatally shot another person in Minneapolis on Saturday, a move that looks likely to cause a partial government shutdown at the end of the week.
Do they not know:

  • A 2025 reconciliation law called the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (sometimes just called the “Big Beautiful Bill”) was signed into law and included massive new funding for immigration enforcement, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
  • Under that law, ICE’s funding was expanded far beyond its traditional ~$10 billion annual budget — the statute increases ICE’s total funding to more than $100 billion by 2029, making it one of the most funded federal law-enforcement agencies in the U.S. government.
So what are they talking about?
  • In its current form, the DHS appropriations measure provides annual appropriations for ICE’s detention and enforcement activities, among other homeland security operations.
  • Separate reform proposals (e.g., the Melt ICE Act) have also been introduced by some members, aiming to restrict or redirect ICE funding — but those are stand-alone proposals and not part of the main appropriations bill.

The appropriations have already been passed into law and now the Democrats once again want to shut down the government to renegotiate something already passed - how did that work out for them last time?

They're wanting to shut it down again?
Looks like they didn't learn their lesson after doing it for a record amount of time previously.
Let's see if they can manage to attract mid-term voters after shutting down the government twice in a row.

What have Congress even accomplished since they’ve reopened from the last shutdown?
Well, there's that whole "govt. workers getting their paychecks" thing....

Well - the Schumer shutdown ended on November 12, 2025 Let's see what they have done.

In late January 2026, the House passed the final set of FY 2026 spending bills (all 12 appropriations), a significant milestone given budget delays and shutdown risk. This includes funding for defense, health, education, transportation, and many government agencies.

There are acts passed -
  • La Paz County Solar Energy and Job Creation Act — Land conveyance for solar project development in Arizona (signed December 29, 2025).
  • Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act of 2025 — Allows schools to serve whole or 2% milk under the National School Lunch Program (signed January 14, 2026).
  • Disabled Veterans Housing Support Act — Adjusts income determinations for certain veterans in affordable housing programs (signed January 20, 2026).

Then there is:

  • Approving Fiscal Measures: Beyond final appropriations, Congress approved multiple interim funding and appropriations related to domestic security and other agencies.
  • War Powers & Oversight Votes (House): The House rejected a Democratic-backed war powers resolution tied to U.S. operations in Venezuela, reflecting legislative oversight activity and geopolitical debate.
  • Floor Resolutions & Procedural Actions: Various House resolutions (e.g., recognizing deaths of former officials, procedural rules) have passed, as typical in legislative calendars.

The US Treasury writes paychecks. The question was *since* the temporary (Oct-Jan) funding bill was passed. Since indicates *after* that bill was passed.

So… bare minimum? lol
Or just shut it down again. Doesn't matter too much to me, but there will be govt. workers out of work again, and we'll have to see those news reports where they feature a single mother who was a government worker struggling to feed her children and having to rely on a food bank again.
Oh yeah, and of course we'll hear it is "Trump who actually decided to shut the government down". That's the necessary narrative which indicates what the real purpose of the shutdown is. All about generating hate towards Trump and conservatives.
Schumer shutdown #2. Bring it on! I doubt it will sway voters into voting for those who actually want govt. shutdowns each time whenever they have no other way of scoring political points.

Ah, the milk bill. (I knew they had finished the funding bills [only 4 months late] and) I wasn't asking about what had been done I was asking if you understood tense and the arrow of time. Your AI seems to. Your first post sure didn't.

The democratic party wants chaos ... for the most part they promote it ... they mostly play on (manipulate) people's emotions. The republican party is certainly not without faults ... but they do tend to present/focus on the issues based more on logical reasoning. It's a power struggle .... it's all about power.

RIGHT....it's the democrats that want chaos, not trump sending soldiers, and ice into cities harassing everyone legal or not, killing people, because the DEMOCRATS want chaos. Not trump trying to stoke excuses to crack down harder by pushing people to the breaking point.

LOL, after one year we have had 10 years of chaos both domestically and international packed into one.

I see nothing but projection here.

Troops and more ICE agents wouldn't be needed if the citizens of Minneapolis would behave themselves like the residents of other American cities have. But if the Governor and mayor there want to encourage chaos among their constituents, then the chaos will need to be dealt with.
