  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Republican Chris Madel exits Minnesota governor's race, calls federal "retribution" on state unconstitutional

Republican Chris Madel says he is ending his campaign for governor of Minnesota, saying that he cannot support the national members of his party and their "retribution on the citizens of our state."

Madel said he supported the original stated purpose of Operation Metro Surge — to detain the "worst of the worst" migrants who are in the country illegally — but said the operation has "expanded far beyond its stated focus on true public safety threats."

The operation, Madel said, has been an "unmitigated disaster."

In his video announcement on X, Madel said it is "wrong" that U.S. citizens of color are living in fear and carrying passports to prove their citizenship status.

"I cannot support the national Republicans stated retribution on the citizens of our state, nor can I count myself a member of a party that would do so," Madel said.

The second reason for ending his campaign, Madel said, is that national Republicans have "made it nearly impossible for a Republican to win a statewide election in Minnesota."

Good for him and Minnesota. Minnesota dosen't need or want a spineless figurehead who bends to the insanity of the Democrats. They need a strong, heavy handed enforcer of the law and supporter of Trump's vision of a New America.

The Trump Administration Is Lying to Our Faces. Congress Must Act.

The federal government owes Americans a thorough investigation and a truthful accounting of the Saturday morning shooting of Alex Jeffrey Pretti on a Minneapolis street. When the government kills, it has an obligation to demonstrate that it has acted in the public interest. Instead, the Trump administration is once again engaged in a perversion of justice.

Mere hours after Mr. Pretti died, Kristi Noem, the secretary of homeland security, declared without offering evidence that Mr. Pretti had “committed an act of domestic terrorism.” Gregory Bovino, a Border Patrol official, offered his own assessment: “This looks like a situation where an individual wanted to do maximum damage and massacre law enforcement.”

These unfounded and inflammatory judgments pre-empt the outcome of an investigation, which the Department of Homeland Security has promised. They also appear wholly inconsistent with several videos recorded at the scene.

The governor, mayor and AG also jumped to conclusions without an investigation

But in a series of tweets, interviews in right-wing media, and statements made elsewhere, Miller has outlined something more comprehensive and sinister—an elaborate worldview that has escaped notice in the mainstream media. It centers immigrants as a threat to “civilization” in terms that echo the rhetoric of those determined to exclude people like his ancestors.

---That larger worldview—and its intellectual roots—deserve more scrutiny. Given Miller’s extraordinary power—his near unfettered control over President Donald Trump’s massive ramp-up in immigration enforcement—a deeper understanding of Miller’s views is essential. It demonstrates in a more vivid way the true extremism of his anti-immigrant project—and why it poses a serious threat to the country and its future.

---

Miller may also be restricting legal immigration in a broader, unnoticed sense. At my request, Migration Policy Institute analyst Julia Gelatt looked at data from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to determine current processing rates. She found that if you total up most applications for immigrating to the United States—from green cards to family reunification to naturalization to temporary visas and other forms of legal status—the number of denials is going up. Denials rose from around 274,000 during the last three months of Biden’s 2024 term to around 324,000 from April to June of 2025, a hike of about 50,000.

---

Here’s the thing: Miller’s mission of boosting deportation numbers of necessity requires arresting people who are not criminals or gang members—people who have jobs and have become integrated into U.S. communities—because there’s no other way to get the removals up. But it makes us less safe. Miller plainly places more importance on reducing the totals of people here—or trying to get here—than on removing people who pose any actual danger. He appears to be actively prioritizing shifting the ethnic mix of the country over public safety.

---

Miller’s alternative is a horror. He has set in motion a vicious math problem: His deportation machinery is arresting people faster than they are being removed. To hold them, he’s now looking to build out a network of vast warehouses. We’re going to end up with a massively expanded immigrant carceral state at an enormous cost to all of us, both in taxpayer dollars and in the searing social conflict that Miller’s masked storm troopers have unleashed on the streets of U.S. cities.

We need more immigrants, and there absolutely are ways to limit asylum and end the system’s failures while opening up more channels for orderly legal migration and for those here illegally to get right with the law. Miller’s project is to persuade you that immigration cannot be managed in the national interest. It can, and it’s on us to show how. Because at the end of the day, Miller is trying to restore ethnic engineering to the center of immigration policy. In so doing, he’s denying to millions the blessings that his ancestors and he himself have been so fortunate to enjoy.

My Statement On The Horrible Scenes Playing Out In Minneapolis And Across America

January 25, 2026

In recent weeks, we’ve watched horrible scenes play out in Minneapolis and other communities that I never thought would take place in America. People, including children, have been seized from their homes, workplaces, and the street by masked federal agents. Peaceful protesters and citizens exercising their constitutional right to observe and document law enforcement have been arrested, beaten, teargassed, and most searingly, in the cases of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, shot and killed.

All of this is unacceptable and should have been avoided. To make matters worse, at every turn, the people in charge have lied to us, told us not to believe what we’ve seen with our own eyes, and pushed increasingly aggressive and antagonistic tactics, including impeding investigations by local authorities.

Over the course of a lifetime, we face only a few moments where the decisions we make and the actions we take will shape our history for years to come. This is one of them. If we give our freedoms away after 250 years, we might never get them back.

It is up to all of us who believe in the promise of American democracy to stand up, speak out, and show that our nation still belongs to We the People

Trump DOJ is arguing they don’t need to provide due process to immigrants. They are doing the bare minimum and without due process an American citizen can't prove their citizenship. They have babies representing themselves to be able to deport them.

Judge orders ICE chief to appear in court to explain why detainees have been denied due process

The chief federal judge in Minnesota says the Trump administration has failed to comply with [court] orders to hold hearings for detained immigrants and ordered the head of Immigration and Customs Enforcement [Todd Lyons] to appear before him Friday to explain why he shouldn’t be held in contempt.

ICE watchers in Maine say they were threatened by federal agents

Community members have been monitoring the activity of immigration agents in Greater Portland.

Now, the volunteers in Maine say federal agents have started showing up at their homes and intimidating them or threatening arrest. Some of them, masked and wearing tactical gear, have issued stark warnings not to follow them.

In Minneapolis, where a similar large-scale immigration enforcement operation has been underway for weeks, some observers said they were threatened and detained for filming federal agents.

___

“ This was not about law enforcement doing their job, this was about a federal agent using intimidation to discourage lawful civic activity in my own community,” said Erin Cavallaro, one of the volunteers in Maine who said officers came to her home. “What I was doing was lawful.”

A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security did not respond on Friday to an email requesting an interview.

“Our goal is to bear witness to ICE activity in our community,” said Cavallaro. “To document what we see, and ensure transparency and accountability — not to interfere with law enforcement.”

___

In Minnesota, some federal agents have been recorded telling observers it is illegal to follow and film them. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said in July that videotaping ICE agents is doxing them and constitutes “violence,” and the Trump administration has said it intends to prosecute those who do it.

The First Amendment protects people when recording law enforcement who are on duty and in a public area in photos, video or audio — with some limitations, according to the Freedom Forum. Those limitations could include impeding an officer’s public duties, for public safety reasons, trespassing or violating someone’s privacy.

Minnesota’s chief judge, a veteran in conservative legal circles, takes on ICE

“Judge Patrick J. Schiltz is just another activist judge who is clearly more concerned about politics than the safety of the Minnesotans,” DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement. “Does this judge really think Director Lyons should take time out of his day leading ICE to target the worst of the worst criminal illegals including murderers, rapists, pedophiles, and terrorists into our country to testify at a hearing for one illegal alien’s removal proceedings?”

Schiltz is perhaps an unlikely figure to emerge as the latest hero to the anti-Trump resistance. The Harvard Law School grad carved his professional identity in traditional conservative circles. He advocated for the appointment of Robert Bork to the Supreme Court, took up conservative causes during his stint in private practice and clerked for Scalia twice — once on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals and again at the Supreme Court. The Senate confirmed him unanimously to the bench in 2006.

At Notre Dame, Schiltz taught Amy Coney (now Barrett) as a student, later recommending her for her own clerkship with Scalia.

A retired Minneapolis couple who had guns pointed at them by ICE in a church parking lot.

"They were obviously not trained at all. I've known many police officers in my life. These people were right off the streets."

"They had the professional demeanor of criminals."

The building is just chock full of non-US-citizens, though!

Chief Judge Patrick Schiltz canceled Friday's hearing, noting that Lyons' appearance is no longer required because the individual previously denied a bond hearing was released.

Schiltz attached an appendix that he said identifies 96 court orders that ICE violated in 74 cases. [saying that though this case is over, his concerns remain]

Judge bars arrests of lawful refugees in Minnesota

A federal judge is temporarily barring the Trump administration from arresting any refugee in Minnesota who has not received a green card and has not been charged with any offense that warrants removal under immigration laws.

The judge is also ordering the administration to release refugees who fit this description.
